Tourism Minister staking claim to local dishes

Our Malaysia Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen has nothing better to do but start a food fight?

She claims that laksa, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, chilli crab and bak kut teh are all Malaysian dishes. Note "Hainanese chicken rice .." is that local or she wants to get into trouble with the Hainanese people?

On Wednesday, she accused other countries of “hijacking” local dishes such as laksa and nasi lemak, and said it was high time that Malaysia claimed them as Malaysian. Ai yah, haven't our MPs got better things to do? Next thing you know, what we wear, do or speak are going to be copyrighted!

Try this myth;-

Hainanese chicken rice-

A long time ago ,in Fraser's Hill a British Planter ask his hainanese servants to prepared steam chicken with salad. The servant steam the chicken but find the stock too wasteful to throw away. She then added it to the rice , which they are allocated to eat.. While serving the breast meat ( British only eats breast meat ) , they eat the balance of chicken parts with the rice and Wala Chiken rice was born.

After the british planter left, they decided to set up a stall and it became the famous hainanese chicken rice all because of a request by a british for chicken dish.

Chili crab-

This dish is started by the Malacca portuguese , The story goes that one day , a priest named St. Francis Xiavier drop his rosary while praying by the seaside. He prayed vigorously and a crab carry his rosary from the sea bed to him. He then blessed the crab , after that all sea crabs have a top shell that resembles a cross.

The portuguese love crabs and so in honour of their saint, they would add chilli in bright red to conceal the shell so that the cross is not visible when eating. In the process they created Chilli crabs.

Why not, the British & Indians are sending bad vibes & words back & forth over Chicken Tikka Massala.

(Apparently Chicken Tikka is Indian but the Massala part is a british addition because they like gravy on their meat ... but Indian chefs see it differently).

And how about preserving the authenticity of a dish?

Think of Curry & Chips! Or even curry itself, Malaysian curry is like soup, what do the Indians think?

What happens if the North Indians and Pakistanis start to unite over the Biryani vs. Briyani fiasco??? Believe me, they will fight to patent and protect their favourite dish!

Foo Yoong Tarn - the popular omelette dish with char siew, little shrimps and some crab meat thrown in.... is not from Seremban. Its was even impossible to find the dish in Seremban (Foo Yoong) those days.... ask Richard Poh lah, he is Chung Hwa High Scool, Jalan Templer, Seremban, old boy!

Maybe Richard can also tell us about Seremban Foo Yoong Siew Pau? Is it from Seremban or originated from Poon Sarm Par (ie Pudu)?
