Err buddy Sentinel...Printed matters...newsprint...novels...books...magazines etc...are exempted from Import Duty...

To know why books can be costly...ask the publishers/importers n authors...themselves.

All forms of royalties...

But Orchipalar Sir, this cannot be true lah because for the same books and same authors, books are so much cheaper in other countries. Most books and magazines cost about 2/3 of what we pay here in Bolehland. You can see that in all the bookshops in the Little Red Dot City down south. The only place I find books more expensive is Brunei.

Oner here in Malaysia, we are forced to pay a lot of things on the high end....The cars, tolls, the books are nototriously high in comparision with other countries.
Anyway, for instance in singapore or in USA, people have a choice not to pay toll or buy cars - just use the bus or subway. They are so prompt,
convenient, and inexpensive.In other words, there are alternatives.
And back to book issue. It is the same logic stated above. Books are price reasonable and affordable vis vis the cost of living in USA. Newspaper are priced at 50cents and even investor paper like Barron and Investor or wall streeet paper are priced at $2. But if you think it still expensive, get it from the libraries which is at almost every ten blocks away.
While staying there, I seldom buy books or investing journals. you can read them at the library or wait for two weeks , the library would give them up for free and even books which is old and not so popular.
BUT the library in Malaysia, now that is another story!

When popular bookshop have their sales some of the books are really good value. Some are sold at 90% off but popular is more chinese centric. We really do not have a book reading culture in our country. Have been trying to get the young ones to read more

Do you think is a brilliant idea that we set up a library here? we may list out the books that we all have & could borrow or exchange with whoever wanted to read! We can even promote reading here!

MPSJ had the hypermedia library - why not rent a few shoplots or buy them at a discount in a few of the different MPSJ communities - then people can donate their books and college students/information students can manage the sites?

I know there is a library & toy exchange in Subang Square in SS15 but something like this should be run by the local government. And there should be a library at MPSJ building!

A public library system was one of the early initiatives of American Founding Father Ben Franklin - an idea that is more than 230 years old - why cant we make it work?

Now I am gonna say something sensitive to those Singapore-haters....

That little Red Dot City has a library in almost every housing estate and the CCs run them. CCs are Community Centers set up by the Ministry of Community Development but run by the local residents themselves. Most of these residents are retirees and houswives. They also organise study tours for residents to factories for additional knowledge.

I have had the opportunity of receiving visits from the various CCs when I was working in Gardenia Singapore and Coca-Cola Singapore. They would be taken thru the entire factory production process and of course they also get goodies and door gifts to take home. The key thing is they get actively involved in community development and still do not stop learning and they also get to know others in their community...

Well thats the Little Red Dot city many love to hate.... and we're still fighting over a few cans of beer sold in a neighborhood 7-Eleven store...

Some joker will come along and throw cold water on your effort... or someone will want to take over once it is done...

Can we sell used books at Pasar Tani or at Flea Market at Summit? or a place without rental? or fear MPSJ kacau?

Instead of just the Teh Tarek sessions once a month for us old folks, why not organize a Sunday morning breakfast meeting in the air-conditioned room of Syed Bistro EVERY SUNDAY afternoon 2.30pm - 5.00pm and all the residents and kids can bring their books and exchange there and meet each other and exchange email, facebook and whatever addresses. This will definitely build a better SJ/USJ/Putra Heights community. Hannah Yeoh can start the ball rolling and go public with it....
