So why are imported books expensive?
is it because of exchange rate?
is it for profiterring
or is because of limited audience for many of the books.

Actually i am no bookworm i either glance them free at MPH or check the internet.

The distributor lar... actual cost and some profit of a book is about 60% of the price.

As far as magazines go- this is very obvious. The same mag can cost sometimes 100% more depending on the distributor name on the price tag.

As for books I now go to Book Xcess in Amcorp. All novels betwn 17.90-24.90 depending on size/hardcover/softcover. All brand new and if you're lucky some new, popular titles. Not as much selection as MPH or borders but enuf for a weekend book fix.

But I think age is not the matter. I feel that by setting the fonts larger with a back lit screen is easier on the eyes.

I read alot... then, I can claim income tax up to RM1000. One year I spend Rm2000+ for the whole family! both wifey and I claim...

Daughter also a avid reader...

What to do.... National Library is so darn far....

Notebook or PC is too bright and very tiring to my eyes.... also too heavy to read on the bed of sofa...

PDA too small.... and battery doesnt last...

well, claiming the RM1000 relief at say tax rate of 20%, you actually only get a tax deduction of RM200 for RM2000+ spending... not much if u ask me

How much $ per square foot of commercial shopping complex space...
does the bookstore pay n still be able to see their business mushrooming...
into multiple chains of bookstores occupying 5,000 to 15,000 square feet...
of floor space in EACH store at those posh shopping complexes...
in major cities nationwide...?

Example:

In Mid Valley - what is the SALE commission rate earned by the property management from these bookstores...
besides earning the monthly rental...
from these bookstores...?

It's all about...obscene profit making business ethics...obscene.

Instead of just the Teh Tarek sessions once a month for us old folks, why not organize a Sunday morning breakfast meeting in the air-conditioned room of Syed Bistro EVERY SUNDAY afternoon 2.30pm - 5.00pm and all the residents and kids can bring their books and exchange there and meet ...

Good idea.... but... hassle to bring the books there everymonth... we should also not give away free books (even if I want to) .... as some kiasu neighbours will come with a lorry and take away all the free ones... but never read after that.... hahaha...

Also, if you see the school buku pinjaman condition... you will know what I meant... kids just dont take care of their books... maybe parents didnt teach them well... tak tahu lar

Best is a CC with volunteers...

As Sj is a "wealthy" (coined by taxi drivers ) community ... it may also now work .... the wealthy people might not even visit or participate.

Parents might even use the "library" as day care.... dump their kids there and go shopping, golfing or karaoke....

Parents might sue the management is their kids got hurt there.....

Sentinel, why don't you try getting yourself a Sony ebook Reader? My eldest daughter is also an avid reader. She bought one of these readers while in Los Angeles and download free ebooks from the Internet for her to read from the ebook reader. I think they are sold here already. Now I am gonna say something sensitive to those Singapore-haters....

That little Red Dot City has a library in almost every housing estate and the CCs run them. CCs are Community Centers set up by the Ministry of Community Development but run by the local residents themselves. Most of these residents are retirees and houswives. They also organise study tours for residents to factories for additional knowledge.

This will definitely build a better SJ/USJ/Putra Heights community. Hannah Yeoh can start the ball rolling and go public with it....

a princely idea! Today is Thursday which is Hannah's 'meet the folks' day - so let's have the interested folks go there with the idea tonight at 8pm! 2 MPSJ councillors are likely to be there as well - Rajiv (Zon 3) & Theresa (Zon 1). Sound out the ADUN & Councillors and give them some feedback. At some point there would have to be a permanent site for the library but a weekend book exchange is a good idea.

m still thinks the best site would be the MPSJ building - so they can show a real committment to education. Throw in a volunteer-run tuition centre as well.

While racking my memories for a suitable public building for such a noble idea, the first thing that came to mind was the 3K or the 3C complexes. But alas, these places are in the midst of traffic jams of Sunway and Kewajipan.

Then what about disused covered car parks? Unfortunately the one at Taipan-2 (USJ21?) is "for sale"

Anyone have contacts with Summit/Sunway/Carrefour/DigitalMall ? Could be good for a Sunday book-club or equivalent ... currently the DigitalMall is quite deserted - can help draw crowd there if the management is willing to donate floor space and tables.

Syed Bistro should be positive with support too because this meet will bring in people and maybe some sales of teh tareks and roti canais for them. Plus probably some publicity for them as a responsible corporate citizen... someone sell the idea to the boss lah...
