Well, between beginner and serious amateur.....is where 99.999% of us stargazers lie.
When people don't appreciate the glory of the heavens (and it's free!)....it's their loss, really.
I try to infect people with my enthusiasm as much as possible too, but I come off as `nutty nerd' mostly.Which I don't deny I am, anyway.

Yeah I share your sentiment. Like when I explain to someone on how to locate and identify a constellation, he/she'd give me a blank look.

Aiya..... classical music is another one of my hobby la. I'm also trained on the string instruments too. Been playing since I was 10, and still playing....
Before Changster relegate this thread to the Chatterbox, lets get the subject of Perseids and general astronomy back on track.
Did you manage to catch Halley's back in 86? Got a pic?

Ya, I know you're into classical..I read your thread sometime ago. But I think not many people here are into it, or they're too shy to own up. I lack any formal training in musical instruments....but I listen to music a fair bit (who doesn't?), which includes classical. Most of these from years of AM/FM Radio and the movies...which means I know some tunes, but I don't know the movement or the composer. Some of them I've since figured out and added to my LP and CD library but I've got a long way to go. Just above beginner....sounds familiar?
Halley's? Yep. Pics? Yep. But I've shifted house so many times I have no idea where they are. I've on occasion tried to hunt down my entire comet collection without success....didn't treasure them those days, now regret. These were all on negatives and photographic paper lah so if they're gone, that's it. Anyway, Halley's was quite memorable....could be easily seen in KL in those days when the skies were much less polluted. My eyes were also in better shape then.

On classicals and baroque stuff I've translated some of the more obscure titles lyrics like Vivaldi's Spring. Also Offenbach's Bacarolle as well as Mozart's O Isis und Osiris. That's luckily because my customer was an Italian who operated a quarry in Simpang Pulai and he helped me to translate some of the lyrics. I missed Halleys when I was a kid. I was on a Scouts camp then. Too bad we had bad and cloudy weather over my area. So I'll never be able to catch it during my lifetime again, unless I live a long long life like that super old WW1 veteran who died recently in England

Italian Opera's a bit over my head for now....can't understand the language at all. Maybe I need those translations too... BTW what do you do with the lyrics? You sing along? Wanna try a duet?
Halley's wasn't actually very impressive as a comet...it was just over hyped due to its fame. The one comet I'll remember to the end of my life is Hyakutake (1996). It hung stretching over one third of our Malaysian sky like a finger of doom, yet most local people didn't even notice it in the night sky! Probably thought it was just a wispy thin and long cloud. What a pity!
A bit of interesting info just came in from the International Meteor Organisation. It seems that there was a third sharp peak of Perseids (more than 200 meteors per hour) at about 0600 UT on 13th August. This roughly coincides with the time lady-o-leisure successfully got her shower sighting in CA (around midnight)! The shower apparently fizzled out 3 hours later....which explains why I drew a blank here in USJ after that. Drats!

Don't laugh, but I do sing along. My German's boleh tahan only, but my Italian pronunciation sucks. Duet when? I have got Andre Rieu's DVD full of operatic works. We can watch together, but don't fall asleep! Hehehe.
As much as I wanna be an astronomer, I have missed many comets, Sghh.... Work committment, bad weather ,you name it. Once I went camping on a beach off Pantai Remis, I did see some meteors streaking across the sky. Maybe a couple dozen per hour. God, it was sooo beautiful! There was even a twinkling light I originally mistook for an aircraft but I believe its a satellite. Unfortunately can't read off its license plates!
My camping trip is tomorrow so wish me luck.

I'll start practising for the duets meanwhile...but only in mouse-like squeaks (micky mouse voice-over specialist, that's me).
