    Limit on SPM subjects considered

    http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story...691&sec=nation
"Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Government might limit the number of subjects taken by students in the SPM for fairer Public Service Department (PSD) scholarship selection."

    Agree / Disagree?

I think they should not stop students (if they have the capability or ignorantly burn their brains) from taking as many subjects as they want.

However, to avoid abuses, etc., the goverment should stipulate that only X (7,8 or 9) number of subjects (of the student choice) should be used for scholarship or other academic considerations.

In additions, the media should stop publishing the exploits of student having the record of having the most A's.

The scholarship issue has nothing to do with the number of subjects taken by students. The root cause lies entirely in the selection criteria and procedure used. This move is definitely not helpful with regards to achieving a knowledge-based society and would not solve the issue. Therefore, I don't agree with idea of limiting the number of subjects taken by student. It should be on the contrary.

Hello Mr DPM, the problem is the selection / awarding criteria of the PSD scholarship, not the number of subjects taken at SPM. Don't try to spin lah... Malaysians ain't that ignorant no more...

So, MCA, why so quiet? You think we forgot MCA President promised a review of the PSD scholarships? Just like Ong Ka Ting promised two years ago?

come to think of it, is there something wrong with the our current syllabus?? Has it became so thin that one can actually cram in 17 subjects??? Is it so easy to study now?? Few years ago, I went back to my 6th form school to visit my teachers. They were saying that the students are becoming so lembik. Complaining that they are studying so much but in actual fact, the syllabus has be 'trimmed' compared to my time which is a few years before that.. The teachers oso geleng kepala..

As for reward of scholarship, I agreed that there should be more transparency. City schools has the resources to allow students to opt for as many subjects to take as they like. But the point on boarding schools and out-of-town schools has limited subjects for students to actually take should not be ignored too.

IMHO, the syllabus is crap. Watering down the syllabus to only focus on producing A-scoring 'robots'. We are going regressing as far as education is concerned.

Our DPM only exposes the quality of our country leadership. We always have this type of suggestion where it does not solve the root problem but impose limitation on another.

    Here's a good suggestion :

Adopting a transparent GPA system for evaluation of scholarships. Then it doesn't really matter how many subjects one takes for SPM.

Totally agreed. As Malaysian we should be concerned that we leave to these peoples to make decisions and policies for our country. Suddenly, I realised patrioticsm is not just about paying taxes, definitely not about flying flags(and throw it into dustbin after used ), but also to vote capable people to govern the country.

At the same time I feel sorry for MCA for having to clean up the mess created by their partners again and again and again..

BTW, reading comments on The Star today, people seem to think that string of As implies not capable of doing anything else, I wonder how these peoples come to that conclusion. Whether there is participation in extra curricular activities depends on family background. Some students may not have the luxury to attend the activities, but tight up with family responsibilities.

Anyway, what is wrong if the students only good in academic? What is wrong with specilization? Do you see scientist competing golf with Tiger Wood in golf tournament? Which financial wizard in Malaysia having concert with Siti Norhaliza?

maybe one day we can vote which person to head each ministry regardless of whether he is an MP or non-MP. That way we can always get the best brain to do the job.
