Oh, I thought they are the same thing. When you take a photo close-up, you produce a macro shot.
How embarrassing...that's what I had in mind all the while.

So, my shot may even be a close-up, instead of a macro and I naively posted the title as 'Macro shot'. They are different after all?

Please enlighten me how does one differentiate a macro from a close-up?

    Masters please enlighten us newbies.

I would not know a closeup from a macro either.

    Closeup?

    Good illustration, Firefly!

A close-up is just that. A close-up. Cannot get very near. I guess when it is very close-up, it is called a macro, right? A 1:1 magnification. This is my layman understanding of the term.

Looks like I need to buy a macro lens then. Sigh.

simply put...when a pic is taken with a macro lense, it's called a macro shot and when it is taken with a normal lense with one of those close up adaptors/filters or move the lense to its minimum focusing distance to the subject, it is called a close up shot

    what about this shot?

It's hard to really define Macro and Close-up. Yours can also be Close-up but to me, it's more macro....wait a minute.those are toes!!! not crab!!! That's a CLOSEUP!!!!

    This?

I guess at some point when it is close enough it becomes a macro shot. At which point is anybody's guess. So maybe we should not split hair over it and just go and shoot something or someone really close-up like kwchang's moustache. I bet you if you go close enough, you will see some.
