The customs declaration form is free, but they will usually ask for a RM3 or RM5 fee. No receipt. I don't want to rock the boat so I pay with teeth clenched.

Same thing when you present your passport for stamping they also ask for RM1 or more usually RM2.

I would advise you'd pay otherwise you might be surprised when they fish out a bag of white powder from your bag.

And if you happen to look into the drawer of the officer it is usually filled with RM1 or 20 Baht notes. At certain times during the day, an officer in uniform will take out the money, stack it neatly and put a rubber band over it and take it to the office. No prize given for who is the person who gets the most money.

Didn't know Satun has an Immigration office? Is it for travellers from Langkawi?

who gives u the authority to insinuate such action?

Unless u have documented proof and have personally been persecuted, Pls do not spread unsubstantiated rumors/hearsay!

If u are too chicken scare to stand for your rights, and u chose to pay rm1-2.00, then suck it up!

Let it be known, that all border crossings at the south are 'lucrative' post for the LOS custom/immig stafff, they paid to be stationed here...they get paid Overtime as many malaysians like to go across afetr office hrs!

If u choose NOT to pay the immig, there is nothing he can do except shout "oooi!", Custom Decl is free in some but not in others...BUT eventually its yr choice! Depending on my moodswing and how they smile or not, sometimes I do & do not pay...

If u can pay illegal jaga kereta in KL rm5.00, whats rm1-2.00 while on holiday? Put things into bigger perspective and u will live longer, happier and holiday more in LOS!

This actually happened some many many years back. I know cuz it happened to a fellow traveller, a friend of a friend, who drove us all in. It didn't help that he was rude about it but he certainly doesn't look like a drug smuggler. He made a big scene out of the few ringgit demanded by the customs people to bring his car in.

Enuff said. He was lucky to be released a few hundred ringgit poorer. The incident struck a deep chord inside me so I never fail to pay if demanded. So far nothing untoward happened since then.

The Friendship Villages in the vicinity may be worth a visit as well. These are settlements set up by the Thai government for the former guerillas of the Malayan People's Liberation Army after the peace treaty of 1989. There are some interesting museums that show the other side of Malaysian history for those who are interested.

There are not many places in the world where you have to pay a fee at the immigration checkpoint. Betong is one of them. Hatyai too I think.
I suppose it's not too bad. You don't pay for nothing, it saves you the hassle of filling in the immigration forms. That's the difference between paying and not paying, some kind of unofficial 'service charge'. At least it's better the paying the 'jaga kereta' flers in Bolehland for car parking.

Its called "overtime" but the overtime is "all the time".....you still have to filled in the embarkation form and signed it yourself....tour agents in Changlun will charge you RM1.00 for the form which is actually free from thai immigration.
