    Hotel in Bangkok

HI, I will be going to Bangkok in early April and would like recommendations for reasonable hotels conveniently located near BTS. Am considering Asia Hotel but lots of negative reviews in tripadvisor. Any hotels around RM150 to recommend? Also which website to book for best rates? Thanks

There are now many hotels that give super major discounts due to the perceived political turmoil.

You can try Citidines at Sukhumvit Soi 8 for about BHT1600 (very nice Apartment style boutique hotel) - it is just next (3 minute walk) to the BTS of Asok.

Hi If this is your 1st trip to Bangkok be wary of cabbies who offer 20 Baht (about RM2) ride to a Seafood Restaurant "nearby".

The trick is: they drive you very very far away and drop you off a very expensive upscale restaurant. The cab driver gets an commission if you patronise the restaurant, at your expense. If you decline to walk into the restaurant, you'd find that its very difficult to get a cab back to town. Had to walk 1 hour back to the main road.

    Also, my 2 cents worth.

    Bangkok is really really congested.

The air is extremely polluted. My wife almost fainted walking along Chinatown and breathing in vehicle fumes. I had to half carry her to an airconditioned goldsmith shop to rest.

Plenty of nice hotels along Soi 4 where I stayed. There's a swimming pool on the rooftop.

Shopping in the department stores is very expensive, even more expensive compared to KL. Nothing much worth buying.

Today if you ask me to go to Bangkok again, thanks but no thanks, even if its free.

Or ... further down Sukhumvit, there's Regency Park, run by the Accor Group. Soi 22, which is down the corner from Emporium and Phrompong Skytrain station. And there'sa very nice park nearby. We used to put friends and family members there when they came a-visiting.

I beg to differ on the prices in the departmental stores. Yes, imported goods are more expensive there but if you were to stick with locally manufactured goods like clothings, you can find fantastic bargains especially during the sale period. Same goes to household items like crockery pieces. Very good quality for the price you're paying.

The API in BKK is of course more disagreeable than KUL. Yaowarat is one place we would go to purely for its (ahem) shark's fin soup. If not the API, the traffic is enough to put us off heading there !

I have just came back from Bangkok and I stayed in "The Calypzo Hotel" beside Hotel Emerald in Racharda Road. It is a budget hotel with attached bathroom and lifts . It is new and clean, fully aircond, with cable t.v. network and a small coffee house that serve breakfast and lunch. It only cost 1000 baht .i.e. around Rm100. The place is stratergic and you can take their metro to everywhere.

you could try checking out places in Khao San road. It's a great place to stay as the place is pretty much alive with tourist from all over the world dropping in at every hour.

The budget hotel I stayed had a bathroom attached and air con. It's clean too. It cost me something like RM40 per night. No it's not a sleazy hotel and its safe for families too.

Thanks for recommendation. There are 4 Citadines as per my web search at Sukhumvit 8, 11, 16 and 23. Which has the best location? I think the one at Sukhumvit 8 is nearer to Nana station.

Thanks for the head-up. We also have our horror stories to tell of tuk tuk and vendors who try to cheat. We have been to Bangkok many times, previously on company expense or tours so hotel taken care. Now on our own, so trying to get a convenient hotel.

Actually I hate the pollution and traffic as well, but love the food, shopping and massages!

Will check up the rest of the recommendations as well. I am a little wary of hotels below RM100, as the one my fren booked on our recent trip costs about RM85 and horrors, we were the only chinese - all the rest of guests are africans!

Frens also recommend Samran Place or Centre Point Wireless Rd. Any ideas?

Centrepoint is a good choice. We used to stay in the one at Sukhumvit Soi 10. Got a one-room apartment. A stone's throw from Landmark Hotel. It is located kind of deep down the soi but they have a regular in-house tuk-tuk service that drops you on the main Sukhumvit Road (and pick-up from the same spot), runs every 10 minutes. Quite enjoyed the food at their restaurant too on the days we weren't bothered to venture out. Short stroll from main road to Nana BTS.

But take note, that will take you over your budget. A year and a half ago, you couldn't get anything less than THB3,000. But there might be some good deals now with the country trying to recover from the Suvarnambhumi protest fiasco .....

Samran Place had some good reviews from singaporeans...guess if they are ok with it...it should be OK

Calypso Hotel...hmm...never tried it but if it is clean and cheap...why not??

I personally like Asia Hotel but the price has gone up to almost 2000Baht from the days of 1200Baht..

Will be making a trip there next month...ah..but this is a company trip...so may get lucky and try a new Swanky hotel like The Davies..

Samran Place is a bit tired but location is fabulous. For a similar priced hotel at around THB1100, try Best Western Mayfair Suites. It is new, with FOC tuk-tuk service to nearby attractions plus a free massage, the legal type. Breakfast is crab though. Get yourself a Happy Simple Prepaid Card for THB50 to call them for tuk-tuk pick up.

Centrepoint Wireless is a bit out of the way - but the CentrePoint serviced apartments are normally mid-market. The betted located ones that I experienced are in Petchburi and in Sukhumvit Soi 10 -a steal at THB1820 p/night for minimum 3 nights stay. Breakfast is much better but priced to kill at THB300 per pax for third person.

You can get these deals at asiatravel.com.
Some people are just average, others are just mean.

Soi 8 is just next to Nana (yes, you are correct...Asok is before Nana).

I recently stayed at Salil Hotel, a 3 storey Boutique Hotel for about 1700 Bht - also in Soi 8. Both hotels provide buggy service to and fro from main road.

I like the location as the MRT can take you to MBK and Centerpoint very easily.
