Hmmmm.. generally you may be right but I did watch Astro food channel and one US restaurant have french fries fried in olive oil.. so I see.
Ok..you and many others who form a small minority who may use alternative oil but fact is majority of Malaysians are buying the usual brands on the shelf which most are palm oil based. Anway, its quality is better than those used by economy and mid priced restaurants which many are eating outside. Actually Malaysia should have a very strict control over the supply and distribution of these items. I could say many would be ignorant about the actual quality of those packet cooking oils except for its among the cheapest. Everyone knows the cheapest ingredients used in restaurants are a contributing factor to more Malaysians suffering from health problems later on. Having said that, our gahmen is blardi toothless (cakap lebih saja tahu!) when it comes to all this till something unfortunate happens...like students ending up in hospital downed by food poisoning.

It is my pleasure to serve customers like tupai good meals with no MSG. And the satisfactions of having my food appreciated especially local and foreign friends he brought in. Win for tupai and win for me!
Five courses menu were served in my daily special to impressed all of them as I worried about our tupai host being taruh kuat kuat for bring them here if the food is not up to expectation. Sometimes still kena, for not telling them earlier.
Anyway, the Chicken Lollipop and Fish n Rock is not fried & no flour was used but oven baked. Only the sirloin steak were pan satueed. Last minute changes to the menu instead of giving GO pasta which is garlic & onion infused olive oil to the birthday boy, I arrange oven baked Domino Stack of Steaks which was recreated from Federicks restaurant, Philadelphia. I thought it is was impressive for US celebrities, it should be good enough for Tupai. That is for making reservation as I usually prepare things in anticipation. Lastly, I gave them the bonus of small samplings IC tea from exclusive VIP drinks. P/s forgot to bill tupai for item : ( singing chef service USD 50 )

Mea culpa! Me Blur Sotong gourmet-kingwannabe.

I am impressed. Baked chicken lollipop hah? Wow! Looks deepfried to me!

The Domino steak is highly recommended lah! 11 outta 10 points!

Trip#2: Sunday Buffet dinner. A supposedly lavish spread of dunno-how-many dishes...But time constraint forced the hungry bunch of Tupais to cut short the indulgence! The limited spread of some 10 dishes were already more than satisfied me...The smiling staff (Elizabeth) introduced every dish each time she hurriedly delivered to the buffet table We appreciate that gesture.

Next time, We will sit thru the whole evening...missed out dunno-what dessert thou

The chef was so busy yet find time to pop over for a quick check...No worries, We came.We saw.We ate. I shall return!

The MSG found in chicken and etc are actually ADDED MSG by the manufacturerS. All these are stated in www.msgtruth.org. but as it said consumers must be caution of all these products because of added MSG.
The site also stated that KFC and MCD are worst offenders. The reason are plain simple - making poor quality meals more appertizing. In fact, they even add it in infant food! but just lately, they are being quitely withdrawn because of protest and unethical condemnation from consumers awareness groups.
Every chef knows permesan cheese i.e. should not be grated beforehand as it would lose flavor. So what would ingenious manufacturer do to sell permesan cheese that is easily sprinkle over the pasta in handy pack? Simply add MSG to make it is tasty!
Anyway tsd , you might have cause a lot of readers anxiety.

    Unhappy

Soy sauce is perhaps the most common culprits of MSG. Always look for NO MSG in soya sauce label. It is a known fact naturally brewed soya is costlier!
For instance, try smell the brand of KIKKOMAN compared with local brands which is half the cost. Miles apart.
Ajinomoto was developed for about just a hundred year. Soy sauce has
perhaps hundred of years developed in China which is fermented beans brewed without MSG. Why is MSG is on the label of local manufacturer?
Cheap quickie to make it taste superior with inferior produce!

You may find many who claimed that MSG is not used in the restaurants by what they said or posted in or outside premise. Sadly to say, either they are ignorant or simply blatantly lied about it. How many people including doctors knows E621 is MSG? If you are suffering from hypertensions or heart failure, you are supposed to stay out of MSG and low salt. Restuarants owners or cooks able to read label that the fishballs or canned tomatoes that are worded as contains " permited food enhancer " is actually MSG? I doubt even our own celebrity Chef Wan knows that or that surgeon who perform cardiac bypass knows that!
I was a manager for 300 seater buffet outlet back in USA which also own 3 more restaurants. I asked the boss why is MSG posted on the restaurant when it was clear that the ingredients bought was not MSG-free, he replied most Chinese resturants even added MSG directly into the food.I cautioned him as his GM, he could lose his restaurant if he is sued for neglience if any diners were to collasped and died from MSG excitatoxity of China Sydrome. Only then, he instructed the entire staff to use product which has MSG- free logo with it.
In Malaysia, we have this syndrome - tutup satu mata or tutup dua mata like what the malacca MP told the custom dept to evade car import duty!Malaysia boleh!
I am glad this blog enable me to create awareness about MSG. In fact,
my posting under the same thread title was yanked off initially from www.pjnet.com.my after 1 day. I rewrote and until just now it was there.

In my restuarant, there are MSG info in the menu, display board and not just upfront logo of no MSG. And I am proud of it even some customers & friends may complained that I should not put too much wording as it was dull.
As much I would like to put bigger wording about how tasty is much menu choice to sell my food, but my aim is to promote real good food with no MSG.
By the way, even my business partners complained about it when I designed the signboard as it does not look like typical commercialised signboard.
Well, it is not! They have to tolerate the non advertising style if they believe food talk louder than just a piece of board. Action speaks louder than words. I am in real food business and not some pom pom girlie joints. Good food is best served with mouth to mouth from satisfied customers rather than just sexy waitress or some grand settings or ambience.

Just found a chilling news about MSG production in China which makes local residents suffering from cancer which attributes to the polluted river from MSG producing factories.
The exxtract is from the NY Times is as follows http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/12/in...q&st=nyt&scp=4
The exictotoxin which makes dull food taste better and exciting just not worth it! MSG seems to be a poison our immune system by replacing the good food made from fresh real ingredients which is supposed to gives us nutrents to portect our body with vitamins and antioxidants .
Saving cost and time to prepare good meals with MSG just does not makes real sense at all ! Especially with the future medicals bills where MSG is associated with deadly disease like cancer, heart failure, hypentension, renal and kidney failures. What more the premium price you had to pay for food at the restaurant!
Stand up for our rights for healthy food with no MSG. It is our life and rights as a paying customers!
Proactive action from us with justified demand can make our life better. At least, we can have our choice.
Looking forward to Teh tarik kurang manis, roti kosong, Nasi Goreng MSG kosong in Malaysia one day.
For those, who thinks it is safe to take MSG, they can asked for it tom make the nasi gotreng taste artificially better!

Don’t Pass the Salt: Most Americans Get Double What They Should
    Share | Email | Print | A A A

    By Catherine Larkin

March 26 (Bloomberg) -- Most Americans should cut their salt consumption in half, to less than a teaspoon a day, according to the first report clarifying dietary guidelines published in 2005.

About 69 percent of U.S. adults need to limit sodium to 1,500 milligrams daily because their age, race or medical condition puts them at risk of heart disease or stroke, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said today. Americans eat and drink 3,436 milligrams of sodium on average.

Having high blood pressure, being middle-aged or older and being black increase the risk from eating too much salt or other forms of sodium, such as monosodium glutamate. Sodium has been shown to raise blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Americans filled more than 300 million prescriptions for blood pressure-lowering drugs last year, according to research firm IMS Health Inc.
“It is important for people to eat less salt,” said Darwin R. Labarthe, director of the CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, in a statement. “Reducing sodium intake can prevent or delay increases in blood pressure for everyone.”
The Atlanta-based agency analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to determine how many people were initially covered under the Agriculture Department’s low sodium guidelines. The department urges adults without cardiovascular risk factors to limit themselves to 2,300 milligrams of sodium a day, the equivalent of about a teaspoon of salt.

High blood pressure cost the U.S. $69.4 billion last year, according to the American Heart Association.

To contact the reporter on this story: Catherine Larkin in Washington at clarkin4@bloomberg.net.

    Last Updated: March 26, 2009 12:01 EDT

The American Heart Association which comprised of specialists like cardiac surgeons and cardiologists recommend no MSG and high salt in healthy diet.
Why should Malaysians pay and eat meals that endanger health and buy drugs for future health problems?
Teh tarik kurang manis, nasi goreng MSG kosong would be an ideal consumer demand.

In malaysia, we have that or worse! Look at the reduce price of veggie or meats at Tesco! Wish someone can take pictures and download those here. Despite telling the Kwai loh executives why this is not practice back in UK selling inedible goods to puiblic, this still be going on like mangoes blacken with smelly juicy ozzing out! Those on the reduce price are sold in near prefection back in UK! It just that they offering it as it doesnt makes senses to thawed it back after freezing it and packed it again. Here at our backyard, major supermarkets do not get prosecuted like the Asian stores in USA!
Memang ada tikus, tapi mata orang buka di USA. Di Malaysia, mana nampak tikus selagi mata sebelah atau dua tertutup!
Of course there worse things than MSG such as the above and also in many places where foods are cleaned in the back lanes infested with dogs, cats and rats droppings over at the stalls along the riverbanks at Bandar Damansara or backlanes of Aman Puri!.
In USA, they closed the premises for 2 weeks for signs of rats droopings! In Malaysia, business as usual.

BTW, i posted at pisang goreng thread as follows :

Tasty as it may, plse be forewarned that goreng pisang. This means it may cause the body cell to mutate and turn into cancerous cell..

Unlike the CAP, I not trying to say dont eat your favorite delicacy! Just try to be healthy savvy and buy when you see thicker density of oil which means new oil is being used.

Formaldehye in fish, in noodles with preservatives which killed many at Kampar many years back, antibiotics in pigs and etc.......yes, there are many things more acutely dangerous than MSG.

Lets us makes the difference by voicing our rights as paying consumers for good and safer food that goes beyond our mouth.

Latest interesting news about Aji No Motto which their new aspartame product was rejected by FDA this time by Obama adminstration. In the following website,
you find out how the Ajinomotto and other major cpmpany lobbied and covered up experimental testings for safety and got thier products approved for consumption. http://www.wnho.net/recipe_for_death.htm is highly recomended to understand how big corps unashamedly market their product as safe with devious gimmicks and scheme.
Remember : safe to be sold doesnt means it is healthy.Cigarettes are approved to be on sale for consumption but......
