There is no age limitation or educational specification?

Well, if the student's English is better than mine, maybe s/he can teach me a thing or two instead.

    huh??....
Giving tuition to a varied age group and education level can be difficult - time and resource consuming.
Suggest you focus on a certain level of competency for your group first, that way it is more enjoyable for you and your students.
They will be able to participate together and learn faster not only from you but from each other.

I wasn't actually looking to teach per se, like a classroom, but rather to assist in their homework or something like that. Anyway, thanks for the tip, I will keep in mind.

This is a good initiative. Forming a learning group where all members learn from each other. Like poets come together at reading sessions to share and learn from each other. No matter what age, level, or background. This way, we learn language through social interaction. There will not be strict teacher-student differences. Keep it up!

yvonnefoong: Well, if the students can help one another that would be very nice for me!

wan wan: Yes, that is what I hope to gain. There are many ways to go about that to reach this goal, I believe.

Maybe you shoud call it a study group instead of tuition. That might be more in line with your intent. People do give pro bono services to gain experience but I guess it's stilla foreign idea in Malaysia..

yvonne: Well, if they'd like me to teach I would, but more like a tutor than a teacher since it's more of a one-on-one approach. I'll see how the first lesson goes, if there's any takers!

May I suggest different classes for different ages, eg.. Class 1 for Primary School Children, Class 2 for Secondary School Children and Clas 3 for adult, maybe on the letter writing skills?

mammoth: The reason I did not separate classes into different levels is because I'm afraid there may not be enough students for one class. So instead of having one class with three students in one level and another with two students in another level, I thought I could maximise my the capacity of each class by not separating the levels. I'll give this a try, and if I find it unmanageable I'll definitely consider yours and wan wan's suggestion.

Sulynx, your idea sounds like a good opportunity to cultivate good English and communication skills!

Instead of books and writing exercises, let the children learn through games, sketches, poetry recitation, drama, etc. When I was little, I used to take English classes at Robert Lam, SS15. These were the things our tutor did with us. No matter five or ten, children of all ages improve their English through interacting with each other.

More than ten years had past yet I still remember my tutor. This shows how much those activities became a part of me.

yvonne: Thanks, that's the idea for me to improve on my part, honestly.

Interesting! I haven't considered that children of all ages can actually do activities together, but seems like it's possible since you went to that Robert Lam English Centre. He came to my school once to promote it. I'll see what I can do about that.

I understand that USJRA is doing community work for USJ residents too. How about connect with them see if you can work together with them for bigger scale?

Yvonnefoong : great idea, learning through play.
