    Touch n Go card expiry....

This is a lame excuse given to milk users of another rm10. Why force user to change when it is still working fine...? Why is it that no safeguard is built in to verify it's integrity every now and then if there's wear n tear....?
The early day memory ic manufacturer guarantee a 10 year data retention but give a typical life span of 20 yrs or more.... Present day flash memory gives a guarantee of 20yrs or more...

....the cards have a 10-year expiry period as “all electronic products are subject to wear and tear.”

“Touch ’n Go is no exception. The electronic chip in the card, which carries the functions such as

memory storage, radio transmitter and receiver, has a 10-year life-span.

“The chip will lose its efficiency once it reaches the end of its lifespan,”

Miss out the link earlier...here it is ..
    http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...784&sec=nation

I couldn't believe when I read it then. Was quite familiar with the application of this type of technology n I just could not accept such blatant disregard of these so named inherant weakness issues. There are definitely solution or work around for such weaknesses indeed if any but none is taken .

Will our Mykard be the next....hmmmm...

technically the life expectancy of flash chip is around 10,000 to 100,000 write cycle. i believe inside T&G there is a flash chip which stores the value of the card.

the same goes to the rest of your data card like thumb drive, and memory card.

but it is unethical for them not to tell the consumer in advance about this.

anyway we malaysian consumers are always stupid fool.

Ever tried applying back for the deposit? Did mine few years ago and I am still waiting for the refund cheque! The whole thing is a load of bull...t. To digress a bit on this topic and relating to the thread by Patrick on Smartag, which I have toi agree is really another money grabbing scam. As in Melbourne, we here in Sydney uses Etag (3inch electronic tag stuck to windscreen which is buglarproof as it does not have any card, all the deduction done electonically when one passes the toll...beep beep) which is obtained from the gov's Road Transport Authority (RTA) by opening an acount (can't remember the exact amount but only a small refundable deposit A$25??) and auto top up through credit card / bank account when the credit falls below A$80. There also provide quarterly statements which itemise all the toll paid at which tollgate.

    http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/myrta/myet...?hlid=tollopen

All this are gratis...you pay only when you cross the toll...and as Patrick mentioned if the battery konks just take it back and they give new one with no added cost. So the big question is WHY are we being charged for even a bloody Touch & Go card in Malaysia??? A BIG rip off!

10k or 100k are old technology then but now it is 1Million cycles with algorithm available to spread out the wear cycle. If a location is being read/write cycle every second then it can be allocated 100 location to make it to be 100million cycle. Still see thousands of system that are more than 20 years ago running fine out there using those mem that have 10 yrs data retention.

This is a typical RFID component available from STM now . Those 10 years ago won't be too far off ...maybe 10k cycle then .

Just look at the life of the memory ...1Million r/w cycle and 40 years data retention Minimum....
Would this specs have the same on the RF transmitter wear n tear...a solid state transmitter...? No....nothing....

that's definitely RM10 for the mykad and maybe another RM10 for the TNG chip?

hopefully my TNG chip in my credit card is not chargeable as the credit card is changed, FOC, every 3-5 yrs.
