Enjoy these holidays while they last

A short while ago I started writing an article based on the idea of the fallout from a reduction in the petrol subsidy (leading to a price hike for petrol). The goal was to warn that if we do not invest in public transport now to prepare for this hike...things will be bad

The article has yet to be sent/published...but I guesstimated that the increase would likely take place in march 2008.

My reasoning was this: the merdeka celebrations (september) would lead into ramadan and raya celebrations (sept-october) which would lead into deepavali (november) and then 2nd raya (mid december) and then new years and then thaipusam and then Chinese new year (early february).

I anticipated that the government would only be able to raise fuel prices after an election, but would have to hold on until at least mid february to hold the election...to be followed by an increase in petrol prices.

Then, the call from petronas to hike gas prices, and the statement by Najib that they would not hike petrol prices during 2007 but made no promise for gas...made me wonder....

if the government were to ask petronas to hold off on the gas price increase until early 2008...what would be the quid pro quo?

Well today a little bird told me that there will be an election at the end of 2007....

that will be followed by a lovely toll increase in January....and a possibility of a hike in petrol prices to RM2.50 in early 2008....

this is from a source who knows a source in petronas....and we all know about sources that know sources...

still...I know prices are gonna go up and I was predicting it will happen in March 2008...but now Im wondering....when it will happen....

either way...m is predicting a huge fallout...higher petrol and gas prices and higher tolls as well.....meaning more people on the buses as they start to economize...

so enjoy these holidays while they last...because there may be a lot of pain ahead....

    Cheers, m

Aiyo, Allurban, you really made my day. I know we shouldn't shoot the messenger.
    Thanks for the tip.
Whether it comes true or not, all I can see are grey days ahead.
The pinch has already left a permanent mark, waiting until I become "lali" to it.
    Won't be anytime soon, though....Sigh

This is going to impact everyone and everything in Malaysia - from economy, lifestyle, savings, business, sectors, the rice on the table etc etc etc - except for those who are exempt from paying for petrol and their groceries - and going to overseas here and there - all at taxpayers' expense of course - sighhhh -

Petrol price is not 100% BN's fault.

Even the opposition will raise the pump price if the world price reaches 100 bucks.

My wish is NO subsidy at all. Everyone need to learn to plan and drive for proper utilization of our natural resources.

YUP... so true... 4 billion wasted on the PKFTZ, another billion on some stupid submarine [always thot submarines was for blue water ops, not shallow coastal waters like Malaysia]... billions on the Lumut Shipyard... hello, the magic word - "billions", not millions.... and still the buggers think they can get away screwing with all the voters... really cannot wait to see the results of this coming election [ ...and their pathetic reasonings to why and how the voters screwed them back !!]

Come to think of it... either the PM really couldn't be bothered or really believes that everything is hunky-dory in Bolehland. [ Bollehstan? ]

Seriously - it is no more about Malays and Chinese and Indians, the politicians have played all of us around their bloody fingers long enough and once too often, and it seems even the Malays are also fed-up with the ways that the Govt run things and hand out benefits only to cronies and the elite. The regular pakcik is still selling Nasi Lemak under the tree, still being bugged by the local municipal [ENFORCEMENT] officers...

Petronas on the othe hand - makes billions, listed as one of the best managed national oil companies, hands out millions of sponsorships to F1s and what nots - and yet wanna ask for gas price increase...

Mebbe if they shud be like the US - let market forces dictate market prices and see if Petronas gas stations survive when the dust settles...

With BN controlling TV, newspaper media and free but not fair election. Do you think they will loose 2/3 majority?

Buy a good pillow and dream on.

I do hope the govt will remove subsidies and let petrol prices go up. RM2.50 is reasonable given world prices.

    Warning

This thread is now sounding like a RUMOUR MILL

Some of you people are declaring what you hear to be facts.

What went wrong with our attempts at teaching you to work on facts and not pursue hear-say? My bananas are getting ripe and I need volunteer harvesters

If true..? imagine the price of a bowl of RON97 influenced noodles ...

With the inevitable toll increase also around the corner... looks like a lot of long distance families are not gonna be visiting as frequently as before too

You sure you want this? Some places in the US are already selling gas for 4 US a gallon. We're paying 2 US a gallon. There's your market forces at work right there.

    KWChang,
my whole point was that we have to adapt to higher prices and the government cannot insulate us forever. Also that people would have to start changing their lifestyles...better to know now than get kicked in the gut next year....

I predicted March 2008 but I did not predict RM2.50...or December...even that shocked me (and I did point that out that it was questionable)....I dont think they would dare to increase by 58 sen in 2007....and yet, the government did increase prices by 30 sen in 2005 and 30 sen in 2006....

So you can feed me the first banana, I would rather have it now at the lower, subsidized price than pay the price next year....

    Cheers, m
