What are you comparing the V3521 against?
You have to have an idea on what you want before you go notebook shopping or else those sales jokers are going to confuse you.
At the moment HP has only refreshed their DV line. The DV2500 is light, with 14.1" screen and for simpler usage, i.e. office, internet, music.
The DV6500 has 15.4" screen and heavier, with better graphics for games.
The DV9500 has 17", more powerful graphics and works good as a media center.
The HP Compaq V series is still on the older platform.

    Cool V3307 vs v3521

thanks for the advise. ya i actually go for V3307 which is within my budget and that time was during their offer time den i call HP hotline to order. they confirmed my order and later dey change my order to V3521. so i immediately call hP and asked. then she told me that they have gave me free migrate to 3500 series instead of 3300 series which is a new series. i tink they got no more stock on 3307 thats why . den i asked her wats the different but she say all the same but this is better cause is core 2 duo compare to 3307 is just core duo. but i ask her the processor speed for 3307 is 1.87Ghz but for 3521 is 1.66Ghz but then she said "core 2 duo is still faster den core duo". so is that true. any opinion on that?

These days, CPU performance is no longer as straight-forward as just looking at the processor speed. That ended with the Pentium 4 when they tried to make the 4Ghz CPU, which kept melting.
The L2 cache and CPU architecture will also influence the CPU performance.

Back to the issue of the 2 machines, the V3521 seems to have better specs but a word of caution; many of my friends who bought machines under RM3000 have come to regret their decision. The components quality are not so good. A lot of those machines will have problems within months. Those unlucky ones have their machines break down right after the 1 year warranty is over.

And based on survey done by PC Magazine and PCWorld, companies like HP and Acer rank very low on reliability and quality.

Just a thought, and sorry for digressing, but I was wondering if anyone here has had experiences with Dell. I am in the market for a entry level notebook for my daughter who is in university.

After comparing several brands, I noticed that for a given configuration. Dell seems to be the cheapest. The verbal reviews I have had however seems to be mixed. I must admit however that in so far as build quality is concerned, the Dell seems a little "plasticky" , especially the Inspiron series.

    Anyone with an opinion?

jayan - nowadays most laptop last about 3 years which should be ok for your daughter. I have used apple, nec, toshiba, dell, hp, compaq and acer - desktop and laptop. In terms of quality, you pay for what you get. Dell may seems cheaper but sometimes it don't have infrared or bluetooth or something minor. My gripe with dell is I have to wait 7 days for it to be deliver. Currently, my major works are on an acer.

"Dell seems a little "plasticky"" cos you are buying entry level. Construction wise dell should not be any problem. Most important for laptop is 1+2yrs warranty that includes parts & labor. You do have to pay extra though. It's a must and a good investment.

Don't buy or use a laptop bag that is conspicuous as it will attract thieves. Get a computer pouch so that it can be store together with her other books in her normal bag.
Entry level laptop will always have reliability and quality issues, (that's where the warranty comes in) so another thing needed is an external hard disk for back up, especially now it's so cheap and she will hate to lose her thesis if anything should happen to the laptop. Don't put the external hard disk in the same bag or place as the laptop. Back up routinely.

shirleysee - From my experience with HP/Compaq they never trade down or downgrade their products. From the picture you show you are getting:
    1. Better and Newer processor
    2. Extra 40GB hard disk space
    3. Double the Ram.
Just make sure you are getting these at no extra cost.

    Dear Rachel,

Yes, I am aware of your suggestion about the carry bag. I was reading an article on yahoo with regards to advice for laptop owners and they are also of the same opinion. Hence, I intend to purchase a Targus laptop bag which costs some RM40 extra. This bag (from the photo) does not carry the Dell logo at all.

As for infrared and bluetooth, it seems that all Dell units now come standard with infrared ports, but bluetooth is optional. Personally, I don't mind not having bluetooth as it is not critical for my daughter's use.

As for the external HDD, presently her volume of critical data (excluding her mp3 songs ) do not yet justify an external HDD, so I will just back them up onto cd's when she is home on weekends.

However, I might have overlooked the waranty period, thanks for the heads up !!

    regards

the price is the same as my first order cause i ask them to increase the ram for 3307 frm 512 to 1Ghz so they extra charge me 140rm but after they upgrade the model for me dey remain the same price as rm2499+140 lor.
tis is according to them lar but i havent got my laptop yet they say within 14 days.
my office also got use compaq laptop 4 years already still tahan lasak lor.

Targus !!!! When I google, this is what I get "Portable notebook cases and laptop computer accessories for the business traveler and home user."
They are famous for mobile accessory products.
Like I said use something that does not say laptop ... eg Jusco or MNG or Parkson's paper bag . Normal backpack also can .. but not the famous names like LV, Gucci..you get the drift. Get a good computer pouch to protect it from knocks when storing them in these bags.

I had compaq laptop - Armada110 which last me for 7 years till the screen's back light KO! Couldn't get parts to fix it, had to sell it as scrap minus the ram & hard disk. Trade in the ram for a new external casing for the hard disk. Someone broke into my car in Uptown 5 and steals the hard disk and a dell 500m.
Golden rule "Don't ever leave a pc in the car, not even for a minute"

    Carry Case for Laptops

Gee Rachel, sorry to hear about your laptop. As for the carry bag, the Targus does not have any indication outside and it looks like any other backpack. Only thing is it has a padded pocket inside to house the notebook computer and this serves to protect it from shock during transportation.

I have also noticed a lot of other backpacks sold in Summit, Carrefour and so on that have the same feature. The pocket is secured with a velcro strap so the notebook does not move about too much.

As for leaving the notebook in the car .... well I suppose the rule of thumb is NEVER !! Having said that, the next best option when there is no choice is to leave it in the boot where it is completely out of sight. However, do not forget to take it out, else the heat from the sun when the car is parked outdoors would possibly melt the darn machine

    regards

jayan - Thanks but it was stolen from the boot. Told they used a scanner. Anyway, I Never leave it Anywhere in the car at all Anymore.

shirleysee - I wonder why you didn't get the XP from Compaq in the 1st place. I hope the XP Pro you are trying to install is the original stuff. Nowadays, with the internet, it is difficult not to have original operating system, unless you are very tech savvy, for all other application
My suggestion is to take it back to the shop that you bought it from & ask them to help. May have to pay a nominal fee.
    Good Luck.

A word of caution though...from my personal experience, Compaq notebooks' screen are susceptible to replacement within 2-3 years. Worked at an office where 4 Compaq notebook, different models at different time period were purchased and the screen gave massive problems within 2- years and had to be replaced at high cost(at least RM1K). Never Compaq for me again.

Perhaps u should try the Fujitsu or Toshiba. Always get a 3 year warranty!
