Fastmail and New Registrations of users

You may not know it but once you are registered into this Forum, you have a FREE email address under our Fastmail server. For example, my nick is kwchang, hence my email address will be kechang@usj.com.my kwchang@usj.com.my

Not all registered users of this forum knows about this email service but for those who know and use this service, you will realise that the email service is not working at the moment. Why?

Recently, we realised that the website server had been acting up and you may remember that it was difficult to get access to the Forum. The problem was narrowed down to our Fastmail server. We are a target for SPAM and our fastmail server is currently innundated with SPAM mail every second. This puts a heavy load on the server and thus affects the performance of our Forum server as well.

We had no choice and had to shut down the fastmail server.

However that creates a new problem.
New subscribers to the Forum are unable to login because we depend on this email server to send out the registration of new users. Once we have deactivated Fastmail, all new subscribers are unable to login their new userids because the server cannot send the new subscribers their registrations to the Forum.

Hence we apologise to all new subscribers for the inability to log-in as registered users to the Forum. This does not affect the users who are already registered and are able to login to the Forum.

Those of you who "subscribed" to specific threads of the forum will no longer get email alerts to new posts on the threads because this facility depends on the Fastmail server to send the alerts. So, we apologise as well to those of you who depend on this service.

I have spoken to our Tech Guru and he is currently unable to provide a quick solution.

I suppose you can do it manually - that is approve the new sign up manually thro' the back-end system. Alternatively, use other email to send out the registration of new users instead of using the Fastmail. I mean this is merely my 2 cents opinion... I may be wrong since I don't know how your back-end system works.

When we highlighted the problem of SPAM in another thread, someone suggested that we get a free application, SpamAssasin, to sieve the SPAM mail. However, that application only works on the client side, ie on the PCs of the users. Once the SPAM has entered the server waiting to be read, it is already too late because the flow of SPAM to the server is the thing that slows down our server.

SPAM filters like SpamAssasin only work when you read the email. What we need is an application to STOP the spam from even entering the server. That will probably be an expensive piece of software since it will be needed to be installed at the server. Or it may be a piece of hardware like a router that will filter the SPAM at the gate. Both beyond a non-profit setup like usj dot com.

I suggest might as well disable this free webmail service to all forumers? There are so many free webmail service available such as yahoo!, hotmail, gmail..etc... I am sure the forumers would understand your dilemma.

SpamAssassin can be both at client side as well at server side. My personal email server (mail.sabre23t.com) has SpamAssassin setup on the server side, by my web/email hosting company integricity.com.
SpamAssassin is an automated mail filter that uses a wide range of heuristic algorithms on email headers and message bodies to identify "SPAM" (unsolicited email). SpamAssassin is designed to identify and mark emails that score beyond your threshold value. An email's SpamAssassin score is the sum of values given to certain known spam characteristics. For more information, please visit the developers' website: http://www.spamassassin.org
The spam emails are deleted on the server. It doesn't get downloaded (via POP3 or IMAP) to my email clients at all.

However, it may be you're talking about the FastMail server, "relaying" external emails (via SMTP) from "various" POP3/IMAP users (registered users and spammers/abusers). You should be able to restrict FastMail server to only "relay local" emails from it's own IP or IP in its own subnet. That is it will disallow SMTP connections just based on IP, no email headers processing overhead at all.

This would allow the "registration" and "subscribed" email to be sent out to users. However, it would not allow any users to send out email via the FastMail server. Those who needs to send out email can use other heavy duty free emails such as gmail.com etc.

Another thing, did you setup FastMail to use "authenticated" outgoing SMTP connection? I note gmail.com use uses that for sometime already. If yes, was the spamming done by "authenticated/registered" users?

    Just {my2cents}.

I am a heavy user of our Fastmail and I have provided this email whenever I subscribe to the eGroups and news groups including eBanking!! Whenever people ask me for my email address, I would just say pcyeoh@usj.com.my. Imagine if I have other webmail account, the email address would sound very alien even to me. Just like you don't like to change your handphone number, I am also facing this predicament. I don't get jokes and saucy news and gossips since 23 May and my life have been very boring since then. I just can't depend on my streamyx webmail as I am getting all the craps send by TMnet that I can't clear fast enough my mailbox for them to spam me on all their advertisements.

If the admin really want to totally disable FastMail they may still be able to set up a Email Forwarding feature, so that pcyeoh@usj.com.my is forwarded to say pcyeoh@gmail.com . That would of course address your problem.

The last time I had similar problem, some years ago, I decided to get my own domain. Hence I can have any username at sabre23t.com be accessible via web, pop3, imap and forwarded to any other nice webmail such as sabre23t@gmail.com .

Oh, those admin at Malsingmaps are also nice, so I get sabre23t@malsingmaps.com forwarded to another email address of my choice too.

hmm..a forwarding service sounds good. less load on the servers.

perhaps it could be set as default for username@usj.com.my + forwarded to registered verified e-mail address for it?

I believe Fastmail is operational again.
Thanks to Ho our tech guru.

However, since the subscription to the Forum is also OK, we will have new members .... together with spammers - I had already killed a few since the recovery of the system. Aiyaahh...

Please let me know is you have problems with your Fastmail.

    Fastmail down again

    Dear Chang,

It seems that I had spoken too soon when I mentioned that the fastmail system was up again on Sunday. It seems to have been suspended again since Sunday night or Monday morning. I tested it by sending an email to myself from another account and it bounced.

Any update as to the current status ? Hope it is brought back up soon as I use it quite regularly.

    Warm regards
    Jayan

I believe our Tech Guru had closed Fastmail again until the admin management come up with a workable solution. This mail server is currently over-worked with massive flows of spam that is slowing down our server and jeopardising the functioning of usj dot com.
