KLIA voted best airport in the world!

Airports Council International (ACI) - an umbrella body representing the major airports in the world - has voted KLIA as the world's best airport in the 15-25 million passengers category.

And in the rankings for best airports overall, regardless of passenger volumes, KLIA beat Changi by coming in 3rd (Changi was 4th) after Seoul Incheon and HK's Chek Lap Kok.

Which has led to plenty of angst in Spore!!!!!

The Airports Council International website is at http://www.airports.org

Look for the link to "Newsroom" and go from there to "Press Releases". The specific topic is "World's top customer service airports recognised", dated March 12, 2007.

To recap, as per the Airports Council International rankings:

    Best Airport Worldwide
    1. Incheon, S Korea
    2. Hong Kong
    3. KLIA
    4. Changi, Spore
    5. Dallas Fort Worth, USA

    Best Airports 15-25 million passengers
    1. KLIA
    2. San Diego, USA
    3. Zurich
    4. Brussels
    5. Vancouver

    Best Airports 25-40 million passengers
    1. Incheon
    2. Changi
    3. Detroit Metropolitan, USA
    4. Toronto
    5. Munich

"Airports Council International has 573 members operating over 1,643 airports in 178 countries and territories" (from the ACI website).

Not exactly a mickey-mouse organisation, is it?

And note - there has been, up to now, a deafening silence in the Singapore media about these rankings, apart from a report in the TODAY newspaper a few days back. People there are seriously displeased! I mean, how could a lackadaisical, rundown airport like KLIA be ranked above the mighty Changi???

There are no details on what the "award" is based on but if the taxi service is included KLIA will be rock bottom.

just used the taxi service coming back from a holiday, and was pleasantly surprised that the "budget" category now includes the Renault Espace, Daewoo MPV and also wajas. As a matter of fact, I didnt notice any of those awful wiras around.

KLIA is pretty damn good, and they've improved their services in the last couple of years, but I can't believe they beat Changi overall. There's just so much more to do and see there. But KLIA is definitely world class - just get rid of the damn touts!

I think they are in the process of changing all the junk Wiras to the Wajunks, oops, Wajas. Last week when my wife came back from Singapore, there was a looong queue for the budget "limos". So maybe they are pressing the "premier limos" into service till there are enough Wajas on the road.

Dunno bout that - i went to the counter and told them " i want a premier taxi cos i have a lot of luggage and a baby stroller." And the girls says "budget also can sir." So i said "no way. Cannot fit." (wuz picturing the damn wira). Then she goes on to explain that premier is only Perdana and Mercedes. The Kia, Renault and Waja are all in the budget category. Must be for VMY 2007!!

Yet another survey - Conde Nast Readers' Travel Awards 2006
    (http://www.cntraveller.com/ReadersAwards/2006/Airports/) for world's best airports:

    1. Dubai International 89.67%
    2. Hong Kong Intl 87.92%
    3. Changi 85.71%
    4. KLIA 83.92%
    5. Heathrow Terminal 4 81.98%

Only 1.79 percentage points difference between Changi and KLIA.

The point is, I think, that there are so many surveys and rankings - ACI, Skytrax, Conde Nast Traveller etc - and KLIA manages consistently to finish within the top 10, top 6 or top 5.

Not bad for a much-maligned airport, I would have thought!

It was really a sad sight at KLIA when I was there few days ago. It looks deserted and we were the only group in such a big airport. Hours before that, i was looking at plane landing at another airport at an interval of about 3 minutes. I could see planes queuing up in the sky to land. Few days before, I was at SFO, counting how many planes queueing before us getting ready to take off!

These days, I asked myself, "why this particular race die die must champion their race, even when their leaders are destroying this country, don't they have any patriotism at all?Don't they have any love for this country?" I just visited a friend earlier, he told me, he felt so sad and 'heart sick' about the sorry state of this country even though he will be giving up his citizenship soon. He was one of several friends who advised us to leave Malaysia more than 2 decades ago.
