Hi,I have an urgent fresh blood appeal for A+ blood only. Currently there are 11 candidates tentatively (pending compatibility check).

Case: Lady undergoing an immediate repeat coronary artery bypass.
Date : 6 December 2011
Venue: Sime Darby Medical Centre (formerly known as SJMC) 03-56391575

For the procedure, the surgeon Dato Dr Rozali Wathooth requires fresh blood to be donated on 6 December itself. The blood type required is A Rhesus Positive (A+). Potential donors are required to attend a blood test for compatibility.

Please help by being a donor or informing if you know of donors who are prepared to help.

To qualify as a blood donor, please ensure that you:
1. are above 18 years of age;
2. weigh at least 45kg;
3. are in good health and not on any medication. In particular, you cannot be on blood thinning medication including aspirin;
4. are not pregnant or nursing;
5. Have not received a blood transfusion within the past one year.

I got an email from an old forum member, ... he told me that another old friend of ours (at least known to some of you) will be needing blood for a brain operation. The patient is Joe Gomez and he has a brain tumour. He is also of blood type O negative which is rare. His op will probably be on this Friday at the Assunta hospital. I was told that since this is a rare blood type, it is not stored and I am waiting for more information by Wednesday as to when the hospital will be ready to take donations for O negative blood, once the date of the operation is confirmed.

I received your mail via a chain of a few people and have just read through the forum.

I’m writing on behalf of my wife who is O neg blood group but can’t access the forum at work.
I have checked the forum but don’t see any info about when it’s possible to donate the blood.
Please could you provide details of where and when.

If I understand, Joe’s op is on the 31st March. When would blood need to be donated to be available for use in the operation?

My wife and me are available on Friday evening or Sat morning.

She is O neg, 58kg, at the end stages of breast feeding (minimal feeds now).

Please advise if you are able to or provide any contacts that can.

I have registered on the forum but not received the confirmation from Administrator yet.

Joe's operation is at 9am on Friday tomorrow.

Just got a call from Mrs. Gomez that Joe is going in today at 3pm for another operation, probably to install a shunt in his brain to release excessive fluid buildup in his brain. His previous operation used up 4 pints of O negative but it seems there were no donors who went to donate for Joe Gomez. Anyone wishing to do so, please go to Assunta PJ and say the donation is for Joe Gomez.
FYI, the blood bank in Assunta is open from
Mon-Fri ... 9am-5pm
Wed is longer ... 9am - 7pm
Saturdays .. 9am-3:30pm

If the blood type is common (eg. O+, A+, B+), then you replenish with other blood types.

But all -ve blood are considered rare, if they don't have any more O- blood in the blood bank, how are they gonna give the patients ?

AB- is the rarest.

Yes, that's why you can't donate some now to save for future own use.

Whole Blood (the usual collected) and RBC (red blood cells) are both kept refrigerated at 1-6 C, with maximum shelf lives of 35 and 42 days respectively with preservatives. Platelets about 3 - 5 days inclusive of testing.

This is not the issue here ... our friend Joe has already taken 4 pints of blood. As far as I was told, there were no donors for him. All Assunta was asking was a replacement. Let us not be so picky ... there are obviously other O neg who will need it one day. If you decide to go, please say it is for Joe Gomez, so they have a proper record
