According to an AFP report carried in the Spore TODAY newspaper (http://www.todayonline.com) "Former Deputy PM Anwar Ibrahim has endorsed former Premier Mahathir Mohamad's claim that Malaysia is a police state, and said the new govt should address police brutality and repressive laws."

Aisay - if Malaysia is a 'police state' like they allege - many among us posting in the manner we have will be having a state 'sponsored holiday' in Kamunting, Taiping, Perak mah!
Why go so far - try the 'same' in a neighboring country and you will be picked up imediately, interogated, charged, and while facing criminal proceedings filed by the AG's Chambers - you will also have several multi million dollar (S$) defamation suits filed against you by the politicians themselves!
The truth among others is Anwar & Cek Det have their own political agenda too.
One still harbors a vision to be PM while another wants to bring in perhaps a certain Prince from the East?
But the fact remains - lets be fair - Malaysia is NOT a POLICE STATE by even a 'wild imagination'.

I just checked the Star after my earlier post but stand corrected - Anwar appealed to the 2 to basically stand down on 'their spats' and concentrate on the threats of a possible slow down in the economy which will hurt us all!
However, Anwar seems to qualify that the so called 'police state' thingy was something that was true in Mahathir's regime not Pak Lah's and not as potrayed in an earlier post.
Pak Sheikh should know as he suffered personally under THAT REGIME!
How can we forget that 'black eye' incident that Mahathir at that material time stated quite vulgarly as 'self inflicted!"

The AFP report quoted Anwar as saying that TDM's comments were a "devastating critique" of the new administration.
If Mr Chang will permit me, I will quote Anwar's words, as reported by AFP:
"It is incumbent for the present leadership not to repeat the blunders of the past....On the issue of the police state, I think he is quite correct. The same laws are in operation, the same excesses, police brutality, irresponsible acts are being used by those in office or government for their own ends....This matter must be discussed and deliberated fully and there is no point for the government to be in a state of denial."
I didn't see this reported as such in either The NST or The Star, unless I missed out on it.
More interestingly, the AFP report said that Anwar would return to Msian politics full-time shortly when his stint as a visiting professor in the US is completed. Which means that he could be a significant factor in the next general election, if it is held after 2008.

Ah, yes - I didn't realise that! And, interestingly, the Spore Straits Times didn't carry that AFP report. It wouldn't be good for bilateral relations if Spore's major English newspaper carried a report on Anwar saying Msia is still a "police state", would it?
