Minister calls for Sex Education in Malaysia

Women, Family, and Community Development minister (Datuk Seri Sharizat Abdul Jalil) has called for greater awareness of sex education in Malaysia.

Survey information has suggested that many Malaysians, young and old, do not have access to proper information about sex and sexuality...the consequences of this are negative and they are increasing

Yet, according to the NST, a survey of Malaysian parents suggests that the biggest threat to the well-being of their children is drugs, not sex.

Yet both of these areas are a serious source of concern for parents and communities...

So here is another area where members of the community can find ways to help each other, to deal with challenges that all people face.

Taking into account the point made by PCYeoh, how about we change the title of this thread from "Sex Education" to "Let's talk about sex (education) "

Perhaps this will get more attention and replies and discussion about proper education.

You cant just 'talk' abt sex education to children. In educating children, u need the 'show and tell' approach. So, pray tell, how do we show and tell children abt sex (education) without the actual act being shown as...ermm...exhibits, between 2 consenting adults as well. Now, can you all see the problem why we hv not been successful in educating our young abt sex?

If we can't even get it right in Ethnic Relationship module teaching where Malaysians should be an expert in this field, what make us think we can get it right here. Whoever is tasked to come up with the teaching module will run into big trouble when he/she starts with Chapter 1 titled 'Building a boy girl relationship." Under our strict guidelines, holding of hands in the park is an offence. So how to proceed to the bedroom part??? Thus ends Chapter 1 and also the book.

whoa, hold on....

Dont jump into the deep end of the pool and begin talking about sexual intercourse....any discussion of sex education begins with discussion of sexuality.

Young people need to be aware of sexuality first...then they can deal with the ideas and the challenges (social, emotional, personal etc) related to sexual intercourse.

This has to start simply...for example, discussing ways to respond to children's questions about sexuality...and of course they have questions....what are dad and mum doing, why are the pussycat dolls allowed in Malaysia or why are boys different from girls...or what they see on tv.

Then there are other things...who can touch you, what type of touching is wrong...why sexual relationships ought to be special, not casual....when is the right time....all of these are important as the children get older.

Im not a parent, and I know Id be really uncomfortable if my children were to ask me about sex....but if parents dont provide the answers....then young people will get the answers from their friends or think of the answers themselves...and likely these will be the wrong answers....

just think about it.

The best sex education available is still Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life". Get the DVD and enjoy....

The best person that your child could learn from is you. However I would suggest subtleness in explaining sex education. May be best to ask what your child knows about a particular topic before you start explaining it as the questions will get more complex and intriguing over the years. Just do not giggle or laugh, even if the question is cute.

hehe m, was just pulling your leg.
The best approach is just to be frank and no holds barred abt it. forget the censorship issues. sooner or later, the kids will grow up and go thru it. its just a fact of life so why the need to dodge the issue. the lesson to be learnt for them is to be a responsible person in their adult life.

i had my first sex education in my secondary school at 14 years. the subject matter was not new to teenagers at that time but at least, we learnt a whole new meaning to it. and that too frm the adults and the legal and ethical pov to it. it just had 'a whole new world' feeling to it.

Actually, the idea of sexual intercourse is scary to many people...two main fears for the average man...imagine...first, your parents actually did have sexual intercourse at one time.....ewwwwwwww and second, if you have a daughter, chances are one day she will meet someone who was as much of a terror as you were when you were young...only worse

....it is said that daughters are God's revenge on men for the fun they had in their youth....

But seriously, parents definitely are the first and best source of all types of education for their kids...

Malaysian parents...definitely will get involved in parenting in the early years....concerned about their child's mental development

infant formula, toddler formulas, play time, the best kindergartens and schools, intelligence development activities, tuition centres....you name it, parents will make the effort and look into it.

So why not put that same effort into this area of their child's development

I remember during my time in secondary school where we do have sex education. I was in a private school. We actually watch some videos and the teacher explains. It was informative and good knowledge.
So why not incorporate sex education syllybus from other country and repackage it to suite the local scene instead of reinventing the whole wheel again. Might be easier that way.

Anyone ever watched "The Girl Next Door" starring Eliza Cuthbert?? We need something harmless like that (but then, that is for teens... )

Anyone watched the Singaporean movie "I not stupid 2"? I think that's a very good example of why this awareness is important. The poor boy thought he made the girl pregnant by sleeping next to her.

However, these are the stories that we got when we try to learn more when we were young:

1. Where did I come from?
Rubbish bin. Better answer is mummy's tummy. But how it got there, no one knows.

2. When a girl sleeps with a guy, she gets pregnant. Of course in this case, our young minds comprehend sleep as well.... sleep.

In our naiveness, some kids even came up with this logic to understand what's the difference between sex and making love: If one has sex, you can get pregnant. But if one make love, you can't get pregnant.

And all because our parents and the outside world are too embarassed to explain this to us.
