Expat's pay teaching in SJ
I would like to say hello and introduce myself to all forum members at USJ. I am thinking of moving to Malaysia in Jan. 2007 and I hope that I can be and active member of this community.
I'm actually thinking of securing a position at Taylor's College and I was told by another member (Vixey) that I would be able to meet people who know about the school and work there.
So if you know about the school please
go to the general discussion forum and reply to my post.
( Admin note - I have merged two threads into one )

seriously Vixey is 7500/m a bad salary. Can I do better at other international schools? what other salary figures have you heard of? Am I really selling myself short as others are suggesting?
i think 7500 a month is pretty ok if u r a local. U can live pretty comfortable with that salary, but as u mentioned in ur other thread, since ur wife would not be working i think u should consider to negotiate for a higher salary and especially since u r an expatriate and might expect to return back to canada one day, the foreign exchange rate would reduce that amount considerably when u take it back as savings.
with 7.5k a month u can live pretty comfortably if ur requirements r only as such.
is taylors offering u the job on a contract basis? if so, how many years?
what do teachers at international schools usually make?
Err...welcome to Usj.com.my webforum Celestine...how much could you get teaching schools in your homeland Korea...?
actually my home land is Canada and as a certified teacher I would start at 45000 canadian per year. But I would have to pay alot of tax on that (37%).
right now I make considerably more teaching EFL in Korea but I'm not getting the international school experience that is valued by high end international schools.
So the opportunity to gain that type of experience is the main reason why I wnat to come to Taylor's but I also don't want to sell myself short too much.
What I mean by that is if international teachers only make 1-3k more per month maximum compared to me then its not that bad but if international schools teachers are making 15-20 per month than I rather stay in Korea and just focus on making money and worry about the experience when it time to go home and get a job back home. You know what I mean?
There will be protests held in Bandar Sunway against the new Taylors College Lakeside Campus that is planned. So you are assured of some very exciting times ahead ( besides academic ones ) ......... pls look us up when you are here ........... at our regular TT sessions ( for forumers ) I mean on the 1st Friday of every month
Err...dear Celestine...we have among the forumers...a teacher from Canada also...he might offer you with some suggestion as soon as he sees your postings...
If ya don' mind Orchi asking...how much you make in Korea now? IF you are making a lot more...why come to Taylor with 1 year contract only in hand...heheh...squeeze more from them ya...
Ahem...depending on your prior teaching experience(assuming not much by yr age)...over here...ya won't get a lot...
Taylor's College has courses outside of Subang Jaya. The Leisure Mall is where they have the Mass Communications classes. Are you sure you will be at the SS15 campus? I assume you will want to stay near your working place so knowing where your classes are will help a lot.
Yes, pretty sure. That's the only place they have the Canadian program and they told me that most teachers live in ss17 lafeta apt.
I make substantially more, about 6500 USD/month, but both my wife and I are working and together that's what we make. I can easily save 5k and do most months. however, in about 5 months my wife is gonna quit so she can take care of our new born so that will bring the total to about 3000 USD/m.
The primary reason why I'm thinking of accepting the position and coming over is to gain the international school experience that Taylor's would offer me. So I thought that eventhough I make a 1000 less per month I make up for it in valuable experience.
