How to make an in-heat female dog to be less "attractive"

Friends, need an urgent advise how to make a female dog (in-heat) less "heaty". In my in-law's place, we have both male and female dog and currently the male is extremely overwhelmed by his "needs". We have tried spraying the anti-scent solution but it doesn't help. This male dog opens the female cage and....well you know, getting at it the whole night without us knowing. We have also gotten some wires to loop around the cage door but he got those out too!We let the female out once in a while to allow her to get some muscle workout but he is extremely single minded and i think she is inviting him too.

I have heard this is gonna be on for a whole month (minimum)! I'm gonna get a padlock soon if this ain't over soon.

Oh by the way, both of them in-door dogs and both of them are "green" hence do not know how to get it done. All they have gotten is the whole couch set and floor "wet".

Hi, I'm afraid I can't help for now, but after this get the female dog spayed. Its the best thing, as you won't have unwanted puppies. In the meantime, you can get the male dog neutered.

When my dog got 'lovesick' with the neighbour's female in-heat dog, I immediately got him neutered. He was barking the whole day and disrupting the neighbourhood.

Many people think its cute to have puppies, and then don't know what to do with it. They usually give it away to friends or worse 'throw' them out.

Had a nice laugh reading this article.... The male dog figures out how to open the female's cage.. Next the male dog will be picking the padlock...

Normally a female dog will be on heat for around 15 days only. There is no way to stop the female or male dog. The only way is to lock them away. My female dog will open the cage for my male dog when she is on heat. So you can imagine not only the male will be crazy the female will be the same Since your dogs are "green" most likely the mating will not work out.

Hehe..I have the same little 'problem' too. There's this black male dog that has been coming around but as I do not allow my 2 female doggies out, he has got no chance at all!! Tough luck boy! For your info, doggies heat can last 21 days and occur twice each year.

I'm thinking of spaying my 2 doggies soon. Not only to prevent them from getting accidentally impregnated but for them to have fewer temperament problems. And not be so bothered when the boy comes over. Hehe! And less likely for them to get ovarian cancer. For the male doggies, if you neuter them, you reduce their chances of getting prostate cancer. And they will less likely roam, mark territories, fight etc..

    Hope that helps.

Perhaps you can send your male dog to a friend's house for the duration of the heat or send him for boarding. It is very frustrating for the male and female to have these 'urges' and yet not be able to do anything about it. In fact, they can get very stressed about it.

FYI, they are only 'fertile' on the second week of their heat. Best time to get impregnated is on the 9th and 11th day.

    Hope this helps.

Hmm..making me feel bad for keeping my 2 doggies away from that black male doggie. He's indeed a handsome sturdy doggie. but anyway, don't think that's a good idea as I'm not prepared for a litter of puppies and I know I can't bear having to give them away.

KelvC, jtl's idea is good. Sending them away just for that couple of weeks.

I think it's just a myth that spayed or neutered doggies will get fat. From my understanding, it depends on how much food you feed your doggie, exercise, age and genetic factors. If someone does not want to spay his dogs but allowing litters of puppies to come into the world, he must be willing to be responsible for every single puppy as well. There have been so many cases of abandoned and neglected dogs..there's just not enough homes for them..
