The Motor Mouth strikes again .....

The Star reported today the following : --------
    Nation
    Thursday June 1, 2006

    Build own arms, Muslims urged
ALOR STAR: It is high time Muslims built their own brand of weaponry for mass protection, said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

They should not depend on weapons created by others, as the enemy could easily penetrate their defence system if it knew the weaknesses in the “imported” systems, he said.

“To enhance our own defence capabilities, we must build our own brand of sophisticated weapons,” he added.

Weapons the Muslims could learn to make included pistols, rockets, fighter aircraft and cannons, Dr Mahathir said.

“Not that we (Muslims) want to attack others, but we need to protect our ummah (masses),” he said, adding that it was a religious obligation to strengthen defence capabilities.

Dr Mahathir said this when closing a learning camp for UPSR pupils, Kem Kedah Gemilang 2006, at the Mara Junior Science College in Pendang, near here, yesterday.

A total of 404 pupils from 33 schools in the Pendang district, as well as their parents, teachers and villagers, attended the event.

Dr Mahathir said Muslims worldwide were being oppressed because they were unable to defend themselves.

“Muslims are weak because we have not made the necessary preparation to defend and protect ourselves and the masses. We could not do it because we have not mastered the knowledge of science,” he said.

In this regard, he said, the Government was emphasising the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English.

Recalling that he was “not so clever” in his young days, Dr Mahathir said he was among the lower-ranked students when he went to medical school.

“But I pulled through because I studied repeatedly until I could visualise the pages in the textbooks,” he said, adding that he had to work harder than most others.

“Students should apply this technique of studying repeatedly to excel in their studies.”

He added that the boys should buck up because the girls now made up 60% of the university student population.
    ***********UNQUOTE*************

Imagine such pompousness and stupidity from this chap.

He talks to 404 pupils from 33 schools in the Pendang district, as well as their parents, teachers and villagers.

If Bush or his cronies were to talk in such terms would this clown sit still ??
That iota of respect I had for this bloke is out the window.
    .. ..... dah nyanyuk ke Mahathir ???

Can you imagine that little boy sitting and listening to the former PM encouraging the ummah to build weapons ???
Dont you think this kid will be tempted to train the next homemade rocket on his non-Islamic neighbour and find justification in the words of this Mahathir fellow ....?

Looking back at past experience like proton, I wonder if our weapon will malfunction when it come to the real thing. Imagine the pistol we use will explode in our hand instead of shooting. We can't even make our own firework and now want to make weapon? Get real man. It is easier to talk but making it is much harder.

We have a long way to go.... The arm forces had good training producing the state of the are rifle Steyr Assult Rifle. This same company is now going to produce the Colt M4 Carbine
Simlary our neighbour was with Colt's M16 assult rifles. Within a short time they dump Colt and made their own SAR-80 and the latest SAR-21 assult rifle. Why with all our EXPERTS we are still having to BUY license? Can we not produce something similar with all those knowledge gain?

Since he's living his own life now he has freedom to say whatever he wants within legal limits (including some things he couldn't say in a position of power), so let the old man enjoy his golden age and leave him alone lah. How does criticizing him now help any of us in our cause?

I guess (to be fair) it's by the same account which people are taking potshots at him right now like in this public forum? He's no longer a public or government official, and he's not even in Proton any more. Now let's say he's now just another private Malaysian citizen. Let's say he registers for the USJ forum. Then wouldn't taking potshots at him constitute a voilation of forum rules (personal attack), and get people banana'd or banned by Chang? But if he doesn't register, isn't it worse in that he can't even defend himself?

This is just imho. I'm just wondering aloud.

Common get REAL! The main reason the muslim world is weak is not becoz of its lack of weaponry knowledge but lack of unity. They are fighting among each other and when one of their own in need of help (like Indonesia), many of them especially the richer ones shy away.

Hmm, TM sounds like prepping them for a career in the weapons development industry....from lastik->machine guns/rifles

i think we are still lagging very far behind in terms of weapons development compared to the western countries that supply our country wif weapons..a bulk of our military expenditures are from importing weapons from other countries..if we develope ourselves...better be of good quality..coz malaysian made lastik oso can patah easily..

    Military expenditures - dollar figure:
    US$1.69 billion

    Military expenditures (% of GDP)
    71 Seychelles 2.10
    72 Lesotho 2.10
    73 Equatorial Guinea 2.10
    74 Malaysia 2.03
    75 Ecuador 2.00

hey..jianwei85...cannot say that lah. firefly in the military bussiness...there are some companies in M'sia that are leaders in that field. Just that these companies are hidden in the background. In fact our DPM (back then when he was the defence minister) was so surprised that many of the local companies match and sometimes even exceed the international standards in this field.

No apologies required. Many are the same in this area. Unless you are in a way involved, you won't really know what is going on. Firefly is proud to say that many M'sian companies that are in the Arms/ Military supplies bussiness are of very high internationl standards. On the outside they may be literally unknown but within tight circles, very famous....

Remenber not too long ago a company was charged with selling components related to nuclear reactor... If the news do not report it would anyone know that is we,M'sian, have that capabilities?

Mahathir is right. We must direct more local R&D efforts towards defence.
In times of war, no country will sell us any weapons when we need it most.

That's buying foreigh stuff. If it had been a locally produced rocket, then it would be a different story...We could affored to fire more then 1 ...so a the odds goes...1 failure out of say 10 it's ok only 10% failure. but since we have to purchase them missle, too expensive to fire more then 1 and it that 1 fails... then 100% failure
