I clicked the link and after a few hours of surfing, this is what I found out. In the US, the hearing regarding a proposed settlement of this class action will be held on JUNE 22, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. Before the suit was filed, SONY has offered to repair this CCD problem for free. I am not too sure of its counterpart in Malaysia and since it is a weekend, their service centre in Petaling Jaya is closed. I believe all the major brands that used this CCD component also offer the free repair eventhough your warrant is over. Below is what I found out.
I couldn't wait so first thing this morning, I called them. They were very professional. They asked for the model I am having and confirming that the model is one of those affected, they then asked me where am I residing since I called their Toll Free line. Having told them that I am actually calling from my office in PJ and I have my camera with me, they requested me to send my camera to their HQ in Bandar Utama the address of which I have stated above. They are very careful not to offer anything until they confirm the problem. I will drop in later today and will report what happens.

    Firefly,
Yes, Canon Malaysia do the same as well, I sent an e-mail yesterday and suprisingly the service customer call me at 8.30 am, I just need to bring the camera and purchase receipt or warrenty card, and if confirm it was CCD faulty, they will repair it free of charge. Will send the camera tomorrow.
    thanks again for the information.

Went there during lunch hour. Their customer service area is first class. Earlier I have parked my car outside their building but the security guard invited me to drive straight up to the first floor where the customer service centre is located and there are so many empty car parks and it is FOC. Their waiting area is very condusive with lots of reading materials to while away your time while you wait. Their service was very prompt. I spend less than 10 minutes to get my service request logged in and done. The CSO took my camera and removed the memory card and battery, wrapped them up and handed them over to me as these items are not required. There is a standard SONY camera service charge for General Servicing (Excludes repair or replacement of parts) of RM 20.00 which I said I refused to pay as I told her that in US everything is FOC. She noted that down in my service request form without demanding that I pay up. She told me within next 3 days they will SMS.... yes SMS me on the status whether it is a CCD problem and let me know if there are any charges. I was being informed that anything less than RM 100 must be paid in CASH. I was given a service reference number which I can go to their website to check on the status. They make it so easy to do business with. Their service centre and their Call Centre operating hours is Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 7.30pm.

It doesn't matter whether your camera is out of warranty as they hace offered a free service in their above statement. The only thing that they will not repair it for free if your camera is being abused. In the US, the ammesty period ends on 2 October 2007. I don't know about here in Malaysia. I will ask them.

Nice to know of at least TWO good outcomes from this thread

    1) Canon users know of a problem acknowledged by Canon and thus promise of repair

    2) I always thought Canon was good (popular presumption that Japanese technology = quality). Now I will look at other brands.

It is not their (canon) fault. The CCD supplier was at fault. Canon should still be in your list as they are responsible enough to offer free repairs even after the warranty period. Will the other companies which have installed cameras with the faulty CCD offer such FOC service?
