    A dog on the balcony?

    Dual role:
    1) Cat deterrent, and
    2) Thief deterrent (from entering through the balcony and perhaps roof).

If there is such a product, use a dog scent spray to emulate a dog presence but effectiveness only applicable to item #1.

Alternatively, a more expensive option but permanent resolution, close your balcony entirely by expanding your existing room into the balcony area.

    rabbiteeth84,

IMHO, install the wire net at your main gate help. the next time pour hot soappy + white vinegar to the balcony , leaves for few days.. I test it myself, they don't like the smell (it only work on cat)

Very simple..no need to freak out rabbiteeth.

Just go to any pet shop and you can buy an animal repellent for less than RM20.

Spray it daily on the perimeter of your balcony. Cats hate that smell and will stay away.

    Other methods include:

    Cayenne Pepper
Sprinkle it around the place where the cat walks. It's intensely unpleasant, but not harmful.

    Vinegar
Spray a vinegar-water solution around your balcony.

    Orange Peels
Save those citrus peels and sprinkle them around the entry areas. Cats hate the scent of citrus as much as vinegar. To make the peels go further, grind them in a blender to release the citrus oils and mix with water.

    Moth Balls
Another scent deterrent, but please, place them inside a covered can with a few holes poked in it. They can be toxic if ingested, and you just want to discourage kitty visitors, not harm them.

So you see, Rabbiteeth, its not a big problem. Just google for the information and you are more than likely to find a solution. But kudos to you for asking for methods to deter them.

That's a lot more than I can say for some educated idiots that live in my neighbourhood whose first resort is an abusive one.

A friend of mine who hates cats would say, pour some ethylene glycol (radiator coolant) into a bowl of milk and poison the cats.

Stray cats like to dirty my neighbour's garden but not mine. I told them that they can visit my garden but please don't do business here. They seem to understand.

Use dettol to wash your balcony. Without their "trademark" (****!) smell there, they won't come back again. I've tried that and it's effective and cheaper.

I hope you mean to squirt the cat gently with water.. Yes..i think that would work. A little ambush with water accompanied by a loud noise could scare the cat away for a long long time. Cats, seem to remember loud sounds and movements pretty well and would try to avoid those places in the future. Rabbiteeth. You could try placing large pcs of aluminium foil on your balcony floor. That could even help you to deter thieves! heehee...

By the way, stray cats are simply acting as mother nature intended and roaming freely is simply natural for them, but then the only problem is that they like doing it in all the wrong places. Whatever methods you use to deter stray cats, please be as humane as possible. Be kind ya..
