ATA33 cdrom & ATA133 HDD on same cable

Anyone tried hooking up a ATA33 CDrom and a ATA133 HDD on the same cable as slave n master device respectively ? What is the consequences or penalty for doing that ? Will it force the Ata133 drive to a follow the lower speed Ata33 cdrom ?

should not be any problem kua... your ata 133 cable works at a higher speed so your ata33 cd rom won't be utilizing the whole bandwidth of the cable..

Someone hook up an ata66 DvD-rom and a ata133 HDD on the same cable and the bios reported on the HDD as a ata66 drive. When the DvD drive was remove the bios return as a ata133 drive.

So if I hook up an ata33 cdrom to an ata133 HDD .....which I'm about to do just because I'm left with only one IDE port left for the 2 devices....the speed penalty would be too much to bear. Poor me...just hope that I don't have to find it out the hard way....

yes, your max throughput will be based on the slowest link, in this case, the cdrom since the clock has to be synced.

furthermore, if you are reading from both the cdrom and hdd at the same time, there'll be considerable delay iirc due to read/write ops sent on the same wire.

CCY, there's always the option of getting an add-on PCI IDE controller card.
Btw, what's connected to your other IDE port?

Oh...the other ide got blasted because of a faulty cdrom that burnt through the interface logic. Quite fortunate to still have a surviving port n moboard.
Yes , thought of the pci ide though. But those pci ide stuff is quite a rare breed nowadays. A better choice would be to use the port only for HDD and use` a USB cdrom if cannot bear with the ata interface speed dropdown penalty.

Thanks ...Jand , you just give me a good idea now ... I can plug in an old ISA IDE for the cdrom . Got to start digging those rare ISA burried somewhere in the store.
