Dead Crows Help!!!!!

Help....what am I suppose to do? I called MBSA and was bounced around. The health department is not interested. Asked me to contact Alam Flora!!! but alam Flora is a garbage collector!!!

That won't happen. It has been the practice to wait till someone dies and some Minister appears in all his glory to call it an isolated incident and appeal for calm and threaten to sue rumour-mongers for causing mischieve with the intent of disrupting public security.

It is probably better to contact the media and let them know. Don't touch the bird or try to burn it, who knows if that would just make things worse.....

Apparently crows and jays are easily affected by diseases that kills birds. I remember that in 2004 in Canada, dead crows were a warning that West Nile Virus was in the area.

I hope we dont also have west nile virus here...bird flu I can live with

Malaysia reports fresh H5N1 bird flu case
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia on Monday reported its first case of H5N1 bird flu since November 2004, with the death of 40 chickens in central Selangor state last week.

But Agriculture Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said it was an isolated case and that the public need not worry as no human was affected.

"Tests conducted confirmed the death of the free range chickens was caused by H5N1 avian influenza virus," he said in a statement issued through state news agency Bernama.

Muhyiddin Says Bird Flu Case Isolated, Assures No Cause For Alarm

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- The death of 40 free range chickens from the H5N1 avian influenza virus at Mile 4 1/2 Jalan Genting Kelang here last week was an isolated case, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Monday.

He said the public did not need to worry as there was no death involving a human from the virus.

"Tests conducted at the Veterinary Laboratory in Petaling Jaya and at the Livestock Research Institute in Ipoh confirmed the death of the free range chickens was caused by H5N1 avian influenza virus," he said in a statement issued through Bernama Monday.

Muhyiddin, who is leading an agricultural investment mission to Dubai, said all 110 free range chickens in the area covering the four settlements of Kampung Pasir Wardieburn, Taman Danau Kota, Pekan Danau Kota and Kampung Belakang JPJ, had been destroyed.

The statement was made in response to a Singapore Straits Times online report that the island republic had suspended with immediate effect the importation of poultry and eggs from Selangor after H5N1 bird flu virus was found in chickens in a village in the state.

"Immediate and integrated action had been taken by the Veterinary Services Department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Health Ministry to contain the disease and prevent it from spreading," said Muhyiddin.

Besides destroying the free range chickens in the area, he said, the agencies also took action to guard and keep watch on all exits in the affected area to prevent any free range chicken from being moved out of there.

"Action to disinfect all chicken coops in the affected area was also carried out while monitoring of the area and its residents was continuing," he said.

He urged the public to report any deaths in large numbers of all types of birds to the authorities nearest them.

Again he promised he will check it out on the same day...let's wait it out.

Department flooded with bird calls

KUALA LUMPUR: The Veterinary Services Department has received more than 400 “bird calls” since Monday.

With staff straining to contain the avian flu scare, these calls have unnecessarily thrown enforcers off the track, as they were largely complaints about chickens making a lot of noise.

“I’m sorry to say that we do not cover those kind of problems,” said operations room director Dr Abu Hassan Muhammad Ali, adding that such matters were under the jurisdiction of City Hall or other local authorities.

Apart from complaints of the birds making a racket and neighbours rearing chickens, the department had also been deluged with calls to clean up dead birds lying in the streets.

“Birds die of natural causes. That’s normal. It does not necessarily mean that the birds had died of the avian flu. The complainants themselves can bury the dead birds,” he added.

“It is impossible for us to test every bird that dies outside the 10km radius (of the area affected by the flu).

“We do hope that the public will understand,” he said.

The calls received by the department also touched on whether it was safe to eat chicken.

Dr Abu Hassan said there should be no worries about having a chicken meal if it was cooked properly. He added that there were calls from Sabah and Sarawak too.

Many callers also complained about people keeping fighting cocks in their neighbourhood.

There are only about 20 veterinary staff in the Federal Territory to cover the affected area in Setapak and other areas beyond the 10km radius.

“Obviously, they have to work extra hours and be on 24-hour stand-by,” Dr Abu Hassan said, adding that culling operations had stopped for now.

Ahh...so that's what happens whenever there are signs of extra work for the govt...just sweep and bury them. Now they're asking the people to do the deed for them. Cool.

Guess what, A group of grasscutters were cutting the grass there yesterday. They just picked up the dead birds and put it with all the collected grass.

What about cats? Can they get the bird flu as well. I have seen neighbourhood cats catching some of the smaller birds.
About crows, today they were plenty near my area (USJ12), all were alive and kicking up a ruckus, so noisy.
Will keep a lookout for any dead ones.
