My son did quite well in his Std 1 final exam, I would say average-lah. But he was placed in the last class in Std 2. Anyone knows how the system works?

I didn't bother to approach the school to ask more as I know what their respond will be & wouldn't really want to spoil my day. Anyway, all I want is for the kid to enjoy school, don't really care what class he is in.

I like your attitude. The kid should enjoy schooling lah. Don't lah in Year 1 condition him that he must be in the A class, score strings of A in his exams. Do it subtlely as he progresses in life. I had a friend who was the only child of a successful dental surgeon in the same class as me. We were in the A class all the way during our school days. He scored A's all the way while my results was like the Pan Malaysia Pool Sweep with ABC - nothing Big and nothing Small. When he did not get A for Bahasa Malaysia in his MCE or SPM our today's equivalent, he repeated his MCE just to get an A. Got all 8A's this time, went to ASEAN University in Singapore and came back for Chinese New Year and instead of taking a lift down to ground level, he jumped from the 18th Floor of the Rifle Range Flats in Penang which was the tallest building then. Nobody knew what went wrong in the university. Mostly probably at U level, there is no more A's to score so when his results showed that he didn't achieve all A's he thought he was a total failure. That could be the reason why he jumped.

university life is quite different from secondary school, there are many cases of ward 5 bcs students unable to cope with studies and a new enviroment without the comfort of home. it is best to let your children be themselves and enjoy their schooling. it is the only time a person can fully enjoy themselves from any worries.

I used to b among the top of my class although myself in the worst classes during secondary.......and when they stream during Form 4.......I was supposed to get into the top classes but due to fate have it.......i forgotten my school bag and went to retrieve it from my seat in the hall......guess what??.......they later put me again in the last class.....

Yet.....guess what I have achieve today??.........I took Form 6.....went to Uni........able to b among the top in my class.......and when report cards day.....I m able to show my parents that I m top among a bunch of so called monkeys in the skool.....make plenty of frens......

Now I work harder than ever......got good income......landed a fantastic job........and still got free time to share my opinion in jus.com.my........and able to talk cock like nobody biznes.......

So.....what's the message.......u need not b in the best class to prove u are the best.....just enjoy whatever destiny has placed in your path and u will end up a happier man than those who are obsessed with string of As.......

When I was at school, the system worked on the basis that every class should have an equal no of 'good' students and 'bad' students. So, regardless of how you did in the previous year's exams, you would not know which class you are in. This system also implies that there are no 'good' classes or 'bad' ones. They are all approximately equal. To substantiate this equality between classes concept, classes were named based on colours, eg, 1 Merah, 1 Biru etc etc etc instead of 1A, 1B, 1C etc - the latter system may imply that A is better than B.

For me, that system only applied until I reached form 4 - where students are streamed into different classes based on results.

I spoke to the headmistress of SK USJ12 and she said that from Year 1 to year 5, there is no streaming of good and bad students... the streaming will only be done in Year 6. The school keep mixs the students up to keep a good ratio of students together and it is to ensure that good students help the weaker ones to catch up with them... ( well, at least that was what I assume she was trying to imply... )

No, he did not. He got an F for the free fall. Jokes aside, it was a tragic death that affected his father so much that he went beserk and could not work for 6 months.

Which school are you referring to? If you were referring to SK USJ 12, then the class with last alphabet should be the 1st class (ie. Dinamik & Cemerlang -1st two classes and Bestari & Arif - subsequent two classes). Do call your school's principal to find out on how they segregate children based on these groupings. It is somewhat grade/result-related.

However, the previous school that my child attended did not have such class groupings nor result-oriented, as per the Education Ministry's guidelines. However, I felt that the system was a failure, as class teacher found it hard to cope with the varied levels of understanding among students in the same class. This matter was also highlighted to JPS and they've acknowledged our findings and concerns.

I know that SJK(C) Lick Hung does not practise streaming. They have classes from A to M (they have at least 12 classes for each std!) but the best students are well distributed throughout. I did not see the teachers having problems coping with the different mental levels. The school's performance was never affected by this system.

As for USJ12's secondary school, I am glad to know that they do not practise streaming. Since they had the Std 6 results with them, I am sure the school had distributed the pupils equally between the classes. By the way, I learnt that this school had very good results - so it may prove that streaming does not help improve the performance.

I know my englan speekin' fren's lil girl,who had always been in a 'G' kelas (G for gong [stooopid in hokkien], Goon [not so smarty in englan, i tink], Goreng [fried as in fried sotong]) but still achieved top 10% in all the 12 kelasses kombo...aso ah, tis girl ah, got minimum tewshen ah...only tewshen mandarin language

So dont; worry too much on this streaming thingy...I aso kena streamed to longkang but lucky i got fished out by rich fisherwomen

But on the other hand...it is better to have your kiddos in good classes......not alwiz better but from my experience.....it definitely proved to be such......

I got few frens who used to be at the bottom of the class (primary until Form 3)....alwiz play play.....never serious in studies......when they move into Form 4......wah lau eh.......they got into a top class......and that blooody kiasu class always study from morning till night......so few frens of mine suddenly being affected by the bookworm syndrome and in a yr time......they bcome among top 10 in the class......went to college and got 5As in A-Level......managed to get actuarial science at Melbourne.......now a qualified high-paid suckers at a MultiNational Company......then he took his MBSc......got 1st class......and now earning big bucks......driving flashy car.......really unbelievable......

But always remember.....in lousy class also got no problem lar......take me for example.....hahahaha.......though i only drive kancil.......but I still in a better paid job than the other 95% of all my frens
