Parents should be motivated to take some responsibilities to teach their young ones their mother tonque. No one is to be blamed but ourselves if the younger generation don't speak or refuse to speak their native mother tongue and all they claim to know is what they've learnt from school or from their teachers and circle of friends. No doubt, English is the universal language..it's a language that gives you an edge over someone who could not speak it at all.. but many have forgotten their roots..Personally I'd like to be able to communicate in as many languages as I possible could..also the pleasure of speaking and understanding the natives while travelling abroad..with fluency would be better.. but who am I.. and would i be truly happy if I couldn't even communicate properly with let's say my grandma, my grandpa..etc
Nope. Malaysian English is New Straits Times English. I think that's the only good thing with this paper these days. What you're referring to is usually called 'Manglish' or similar.Originally Posted by layman
I think this study must be fundamentally flawed. Please give reference so we can understand the context. I there have been quite a few studies over the years saying the complete opposite: the more languages you learn as a kid, the better are your communication, leadership and emotional intelligence skills. That's not saying that studying mother tongue is not important. It is.well its proven beyond any doubt indeed that studying in ur mother tongue is the best form of educating the kids- a study was done in Hk and canada where theres a large chinese immigrant community

communication leadership and emotional skills have aboslutely nothing to do with your proficiency of a language.the thought process will always be in your 1st language ie your mother tongue followed by transferring the message into the spoken or written form of any languages
to be proficient in ur mother tongue is not about making choices-hudson's choice, yes you can choose your 2nd language english etc.but not your 1st language
kw
by pandering the fact that ur thought process is in english will confer you the arguable status of a native speaker.are you one?are you considered as one by the kweilos in particular and the asians in general?

yes, why do you find it unbelievable.
correct me if i m wrong- malaysian english is an adulterated form of english with unequivocal evidence of translating from chinese to english
eg why like that? sure or not? got ah?give me ABC -well thats not english!!!
Well you're wrong, some of us speak with proper english and not the sort of rubbish you expect from petaling street vcd peddlers.
and u make this audacious claim ,loud pronouncement that ur 1st language is english.u can never be in the same league as the englishman with ur accent and poor command of proper english spoken and written
what makes you think englishmen speak Queen's English, hello......even they have their irish, welsh slang what more us. And now you are condemning my command of the language......you sure your nick is layman and not your royal highness hahahahaha.

Oh so now they are the benchmark. I'm sure you realise that Hong Kong has a different cultural mix as compared to us, the national language for pete sake is cantonese/mandarin, almost everything around them is in that language, doesn't that make learning easier..........duh.
are u not a chinese ethnically?dont u feel ashame of ur inability to communicate with ur fellow chinese in chinese
you see what i mean, this "don't you feel ashame" business is translated as you say earlier from chinese or malay, technically this action/feeling does not exist in my dictionary....seriously, try asking another person whose mother tongue is english but yellowish on the outside.
ask the kweilos if they do find it exotic strange and incomprehensible that 2 chinaman should be conducting their business in english???
If you consider yourself in the same league as the angmohs, which i do, i really wouldn't care what others would think of me, 'specially narrow-minded chinaman hahahaha.

Orchi,
I think Pets=Friends have a bit of a problem handling the quotation bits. When I read it, I was a bit annoyed when it was made to look like I was the one who said those words in RED.
To clarify - Pets=Friends is the one rebutting in Red and then she messed it up by patting me on my back by saying "Very well said, chang. Thank you".
If anyone is confused, please move to the earlier page and read my contribution. I am only trying to moderate here. As all things taken in moderation, we need to balance the diet a bit. I was hoping that those strongly in favour of ethnic languages as the rightful main language look at things in a different way. I was asking them to accept the diversity of language preferences and that it does not bastardise the person in any way.
Err...aarrrhhh...now Orchi is back on the trail...TQ...n ahem...it would remind Orchi...to NOT start an argument with Pets
...
Err...IF a "yellow" banana is a term used to describe a chinese who doesn't either speak or understand...the widely spoken or written Mandarin language...ahem...perhaps a "white" banana could be a suitable term to describe a person lika Orchi...who could write or speak the England...but NOT understand it as much...?
Ahem...Orchi hopes this may NOT be seen as off topic...BUT until today...Orchi is still convinced that...the England language...is by far a VERY confusing language to learn or master...
Err...got too many homograph...
Ahem...any additions or comments?...TQ![]()
