I reaslise that there are 2 kind - 1st with glass vacuum and 2nd only with double layer stainless steel. I think the former is better.
And about the brand, I find:
Thermos - fanciful but not so good in quality.
Tiger - look good but expensive.
Lion star - cheap and good, at least from my experience using my in law 2 years old flask
The China glass vacuum heat last longer than the SS ones, IMHO.
But my wife bought a cooking pot with lid to cook porridge or soup and put into another container which is still hot by dinner time..... :D new technology?

Tiger and Zojirushi (Elephant) Vacuum bottles are mostly made in Japan, but competitive models are actually made in China too.
Lion Star is from Indonesia, they use China glass Vacuums too.
How to test a bottle?
Buy it from the Departmental Store, bring it home and boil enough hot water to fill up the bottle. Let it sit inside for 18 hours (minimum standard)
If in 18 hours it is still hot, it is ok, if not bring it back to the Departmental Store and get it changed.
I am sure the Japanese Brands will last you at least 24 hours, that's why they cost more.
And what makes me the expert? I use to import Vacuum bottles, including Nissan, Thermos, Aladdin, Zojirushi, Peacock, Gloria, Lion Star just to name a few.

It is called a Thermal Pot, if I am not mistaken it was invented by Nippon Sanso a Japanese Company, the owners of Thermos (which is a British Brand).Quote:

Buy any Japanese Brand. Why? because they last longer and spare parts are available, if not from the local agent, you can get direct from the factory in Japan. Go for Tiger or Zojirushi.Quote:

As for the Termal pot, I have one. I find it is not so good for the Asian type of food that requires simmering a lot. Food tend to taste undercooked.

As far as I know the Thermal pot is the best seller in Taiwan and to some extend in Hong Kong, it is like a 'must have' cooking utensil. That's why they tried to promoted it here and in Sinapore to limited success.

Not all cooking can be done in the Thermal pot. At home, we use it mainly for soup - cook the soup the usual way in the metal pot over the gas fire. Once it is boiling, take it out and place in the Thermal pot unit and close the lid. The soup will stew itself using its own heat - much better than a slow cooker since no fire or electricity is needed. Usually, we reheat the internal pot over the fire again after an hour or 2 and continue with the self cook within the thermal pot.Quote:

You can also cook porridge in the same way. Apart from that we find it is a great food warmer - like for example carrying a pot of freshly cooked nasi lemak to a picnic. You get hot nasi lemak even 2 hours later because of the thermal pot's excellent heat retention.
