We've been here in West Malaysia for the last 20 years, and I am certain that there are many more before us (ok..ok.. thanks for the hospitality) but guess what... I can only count with no more than 2 hands, the number of Sarawak Laksa stalls here!!

What is wrong with this situation people ? The real Laksa (Sarawak Laksa, ie.) is eaten by all Sarawakians every morning, all year round, with the exception of CNY, Raya and Christmas. We fly (gaya ok... not drive) home every so often, only to head to the nearest Kolo Mee stall, then proceed to the Laksa stall - then go home, see parents, wifes, kids, friends, in-laws (in that order) etc.

Just tried the Laksa stall that just opened at Taipan - ok, now I understand why it is not popular - soup was like laksa stained shirt boiled in water forever - and NO lime !!! What a shame. If you must, go over to Bangsar and look for Auntie from Kuching.

I demand that we set up an official Sarawak FDA unit here in West Malaysia to approve all stalls set up under the Sarawakian name. (FDA stands for - Food is Delicious Authority)

Hi Simon,
Whereabout exactly is the Sarawak Laksa in Bangsar? I've learnt to love it..and knows how to cook it too..tho not as nice as the authentic ones from Sarawak itself. The problem is, I've run out of laksa paste... :) That, i do not know how to make.. :o

Mon, the auntie from kuching that I was referring to has set up a stall in the old part of bangsar at the coner shop - can't remember the name - but if you are coming from the federal highway, up the hill to bangsar, then it's the row of shophouse at 11 o'clock as you approach the round-about. I do hope someone else can remember this shop's name for you.

Don't make the paste yourself... get your Sarawak friends to get some for you... one thing it's too troublesome, the other ... don't compete with our poor small sarawakian laksa industry. If they close down - how ? Millions of Sarawakians (ok.. some) will be lost without Laksa (which we seldom leave home without it)

The laksa paste is special that we can't make it ourselves unless you want to take the trouble of getting it in the forest for the roots and leaf that they use for the paste..hehehe.

Yeah...my aunt normally buys in dozens from Kuching; about rm8-9 per pack...in fact, whilst she was there a few months back, a friend (a Sarawakian who home makes her paste) gave her the secret recipe..but aunt says too much work and yes, too much ingredients to pick, lotsa work..well, it'd be a great, if more authentic sarawak laksa stalls were to be set up here..or in Taipan itself!
Could have it like twice a week!..the least..

Simon, I luv the Kon Lo Sarawak mee too. :)

Just had a Sarawak Laksa this morning here in Sunway... from a auntie also sells Kam pua mee.
Sorry to say I won't recommend it to sarawakian, the taste of the soup is very close, served with lime & belacan, but belacan not spicy at all... :(
It got all of the ingredient like shredded egg, taugeh, the small leave (can't remember what you call it), chicken strips and prawn and meehoon.
Too bad almost everything is too shredded... chicken, egg, leaves... even the meehoon too :( prawn also not very fresh... :( belacan also not spicy :(
The taste is close to original after I added in extra belacan and squeeze the lime kau kau until the last drop... :p
She just started selling the laksa recently, previously she's selling only the kam pua mee.. maybe still need more practice and experience to cook a better laksa.
Will give her a second try after 1 or 2 more months.. :p

I heard there's a kopitiam in Pandan Indah which is run by sarawakian only, all stalls are selling original sarawakian food like laksa, kueh chap, kolo mee & etc... yummy yummy... near lunch time already and hungry already... :p

You can try Restoran 777 at the corner of Jln Pandan Indah 4/1 and Jalan Pandan 4/6 for their Kuching Kolo mee (curly type), Kuching Laksa and Kueh Chap. This coffeeshop is operated all by Kuching people.

Another coffee shop where you can find very good Sarawak Laksa and Kampua mee is Restoran Gembira at Jln SS24/8 near the junction of Jln SS24/11 (opp. Ming Tien in Taman Megah). This seller is from Miri.

Thanks to Willyleect for the info... :D

Kolo mee is another one.. ok la, don't want to talk anymore.. must go now...

IIRC, there is a shop near Eastin Hotel / Phileo Damansara, that specialise in Sarawak delicacies. They serve dishes like "Ka chan ma", chicken cook-in-bamboo (iban style) and of course, Sarawak Laksa. Anyone tried before or knows if they are still there?

Just remembered that almost a YEAR ago... talking about the same thing. This seems to be the 'end of year' syndrome of longing to go back to '2nd home'.

LMei, to your question on kolo mee, please see quote below for directions within Bandar Sunway. Haven't tried it personally. Good luck.

off to US next week.. have fun here guys.

Simon, there's also a store in Taman Mayang that sells good Kuching Laksa-the uncle also from Kuching.

Kolo mee? Try this coffee shop in Bdr Sunway (next to Maybank), tho still not exactly the same but about 98% close. The person is from Kuching also.

Alternatively, whenever I get my air-flown supply (which I get almost monthly), I'll save some for you (getting sick of the many packets my parents ta pau & air flown for me).

Orchi, u on for the potluck thingy???

Simon / mysticalangel,

This Taman Mayang Kuching laksa stall; are they still there? If so, would appreciate some directions or their address.

Thanks.

I'm a breakfast regular there with my wifey, it's called Ming Tien Foodcourt, stall owner is an aunty, sometimes her son will be there also, but it's not exactly kolo mee lor...
it's actually Kampua mee, which is a bit different from kolo mee, but close lar... foochow will like it :p
Now she's starting to sell sarawak Laksa also

For a kolo mee close to original one can try Asia Cafe @ SS15, the stall is just next to the stall selling China handmande lamen, behind the pizza/pasta stall

Hi all, the auntie's Sarawak Laksa is really good. The gravy (laksa) is thick and tastes just right.

Take a read in here.
Auntie Jong's Sarawak Laksa (http://www.sun2surf.com/article.cfm?id=7721)

Auntie's new handphone no: 016-3153213. Name of shop is Nam Chuan Coffeeshop at Lucky Garden, Bangsar.

Thanks for the link.

Ya, untie's laksa is by far the best available in West Malaysia. Get to do my normal stuffs, eat all the beehun and tauge first, and leave all the eggs, sliced chicken and prawns for last and finale, suck up the soup!

Thank you Simon for the lead.

I went for Auntie Jong's Sarawak Laksa at Bangsar this morning and was very disappointed that the laksa gravy was not fresh. I think the gravy is probably from the previous day(s), as there is already a "sourish" smell in it!

However, when I ate there a few weeks ago, it was alright.

Anyway, for those who are interested in "real" Kuching kolo mee, there is now this stall, just behind Auntie Jong's stall, selling it. The seller is the same group of people as the one from Restoran 777 in Pandan Indah. They have just started about a week ago.

Is this the starting of little-Kuching-town over at this bangsar outlet ?

Now, thinking of our 'makan' future, and the growth of sarawak fair, we only need "kuih chap" from carpenter street, "Gu Bak Mee" from open air and chicken pie from Hanis Bistro (spelling ?)

Wah, hungry, just thinking about it.

Hmm... speaking about "Gu Bak Mee"... for me the best is still "Zhui Kui" (water ghost in hokkien :D) in Song Kheng Hai Hawker center. Dunno why they call him water ghost tho... :p
He used to operate his stall opposite the Star Cineplex (last time issit Rex?)... then move to Song Kheng Hai.
His Gu Bak Mee really come in a big portion and very very very yummy too~ :D Gotta have it coming CNY when I'm home :D
Open air is our second choice only when "Zhui Kui" is not opening

Just found another Sarawak Laksa stall. This relatively new stall is at Restoran Megah Good Luck, situated back to back with "Fatty Crab" Taman Megah and diagonally opposite Restoran Gembira which also sell Sarawak Laksa.

The Sarawak Laksa there is quite good. The soup is more tasty (more laksa paste) and thicker than the one at Restoran Gembira. The beehon is also better in that it is sort of springy, rather than soggy.

Best of all, the stall also serve fried tomato-kwayteow/mee, something which I have not been able to find anywhere else in the Klang Valley. I have not tried it yet though and would appreciate some feedback, should any of you go and try it.

May I please request for an update for location to find Sarawak Laksa and Kolo Mee? Family and I are coming home for a break, and want to 'pig out' on a makan spree.

Many thanks,

Kolo mee you may try a shop called Face to Face, or "Mian Dui Mian" 面對面 in Mandarin.
They have multiple branches around Klang valley, and there's a new branch in Sunway Metro beside CIMB bank. It's the most authentic kolo mee I tasted so far in Klang valley, but it's a bit pricey. They are also the only one I found so far which serve red chilies in vinegar like how we had our kolo mee back in S'wak.

As per some of the post above, the stall selling laksa and tomato kwayteow in Tmn Megah beside fatty crab are still there. There's another smaller corner lot kopitiam opposite also have a stall selling kolo mee and laksa.
Sunway Metro Ming Tien also got a stall selling S'wak Laksa and kampua mee.

Thanks Sentinel.. now.. let's not get started with whose laksa is better.. my wife is from Penang.. so we already have this standing state pride discussion everyday.. luckily we both love ALL laksa...(but the Sarawak one is still better)..

Now that we moved to the US, we cannot be so choosy.. unlike before.. if only Auntie from Bangsar wants to come to the US and set up stall...*sigh* we can only dream.

Thanks for coming by to try the Sarawak Laksa. Actually the original version is the imported beehoon[slightly thicker], without the yellow mee and without "tau-pok" either. We have modified it to suit the local taste, more like fusion food. We will import in the original noodles in the near future and serve 2 versions. You can tell the server at the stall to minus the tau pok and she will top up more of the other condiments.

I think your present beehon is acceptable, as long as you ensure that it is not over cooked (i.e until soggy). Just pre-soak the beehon and briefly banched, should be nice...

Personally, I would prefer a bit more bean-sprout.
