View Full Version : Weekend in Melaka
Anyone for cheap and good food in Melaka? Back home for a day and went food hunting with mum! Check these 2 places out.
Restoran Sup Lembu Tangkak (a branch)
37, Jalan Merdeka, Taman Melaka Raya
Opens daily from 8am - 5pm
- not as addictive as the Seremban beef noodles but something different, esp. if you prefer the soup type. No dry, however. Price rm4,5,6.
Kopi Tiam Tanka- Home made 100% Ikan Parang Fish Ball (Yee Kiaw)
along Jalan Kota Laksamana (after Ranger Kolej)..1st row of shop on your left
Mum claims this is the best she has tasted..ok for me..very fresh fish balls tho.
:) Anyone else has tasted any good food in Melaka? Or if you need any info (chicken rice balls or duck mee maybe?), let me know..will try to get the addresses for you.
Hi Mon,
I agree Malacca is famous for certain delicious dishes but the noodles, quite bland actually if compared with KL or Ipoh.
But if I am there I usually go to Taman Bunga Raya for the taste of Nonya cuisine, Makko is not bad, have you tried any of the nonya food.? I understand there is a good one in Jonker street?
Cheerz
Hey Ski..I like Makko Nyonya but rather have the more affordable c&g food in Melaka. Later..would get more nyonya food contacts for you..
Went to Jonker street for the night china market on Saturday..not sure which Nyonya restaurant is good cos never tried..
Have you tried Roti John? It's in a foodcourt behind Southern Hospital in town..
Hi
What's Roti John if I may ask.
Tq
I just know how to eat but don't quite know how to make it.. :)
..Basically what is inside a roti john is..butter, sardines, onions, eggs..fried on a large flat pan (similar to the preparation of a roti canai without having to flip it into the air tho) with more oil/butter till crispy and all yummy to eat.
The roti is longgggggg....like a french loaf but softer in texture and cut into halves..shredded cabbage, mayonaise, tomato and chily sauce is lastly added before serving... :)
dari saya punya experience.....roti john boleh dinikmati di bazaar ramadan....tak payah pegi melaka la.....sesetengah gerai burger pun ada....tapi pendek sikit la.... :D

sly-mee...saiz bukannya satu faktor yang utama... :) ...yang penting, rasanya mesti sedap... :p :)
..if you fancy eating beef...check out "Loi's Bak Kut Teh & Beef stall".
The shop is in a house opposite Akademi Kastam, Bukit Baru. The Bak Kut Teh sux (from what I've heard) but the claypot beef is delicious..
Open in the evenings only.
..never post on food before breakfast..makes me hungry! :p
Thanks Mon,
Sounds delicious, whereabout is this Southern Hospital.
Tq
Hey Ski, Southern Hospital is facing City Bayview Hotel..before Ramada Hotel..or if ya know where the old Federal Theatre is, the Roti John is just opposite...ya won't get lost in a town like Melaka...it's pretty small.
If ya go food hunting on weekends, ya might just bump into me! :p :)
Haha...now i know where my money went...into my stomach! :p
Don forget the best chendol in Malacca at the Mangosteen house opposite the Red Church, Christ Church, park the car alongside and you will be served. ;)
Yes! miss the chendol.. :o
Chicken Rice Balls...personally, I luv de one at Chop Chung Wah..
It's location, 1st corner shop after the Christ Church bridge.. :)

I know of the Nyonya Restaurant in Jonker Street. It's located opposite Geographer Pub and it's called Nancy Restaurant. A bit pricey. The onde-onde is very nice - but at RM1.30 for 3 biji - this is daylight robbing lor! And it's not a price fellow Malaccan would pay for!! Mainly Singaporean and outstation tourist go to Nancy.
As for me, I still like Makko. More authentic than Ole Sayang, which comes with cosy ambience but the food is not exactly traditional Nyonya to me.
One more delicious food that I could only find in Melaka is the fried fish ball + fish crackers + yam ball + ngo hiong combination. You can usually get it at the coffee shop under the tree which is located at the end of Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. The locals will call this coffee shop as "Tua Chiu Kah" - meaning Under the Big Tree. There are some who sell it on a tricycle. It is served with chilli and a sweet flavoured sauce and toasted sesame seed. This is a MUST for me as breakfast whenever I am in Malacca. It's a favourite among children. We usually call it "Hee Wan" - or Fish Ball. But actually it has more than fish balls in it.

The Roti John that is sold in Melaka definitely taste different from the one sold in Bazaar Ramadan at SS18. I can vauch for that.
The Melaka ones is crispy, with thick serving of sardines and eggs combined together!! We used to drive all the way to Tanjung Bidara for Roti John long time ago!
Rolypoly, you and I MUST get together one fine day.. :p
By the way, which pineapple tart shop would you recommend? Went to Jonker street but too many to choose from. Pretty cheap at rm5 per box of 12s huh. And huge ones too! Thanks.. :)
Back in 1994, I used to frequent Melaka for work. And during those days, my staple dinner was fried oysters and siew-mai from a particular shop, I'm talking like every nite if I was there for a week. I ate nothing else. The joint was next to the Ramada hotel and there was this guy who fries the best horchien I've ever had till now. The RM3 plate was good enough but at times, I'll share another plate with a colleague.
Then there was a woman who will sell siew mai and other fried stuff. RM2 of that made it a 'wholesome meal'.
The horchien seller went bust, got himself into some 'financers ;)' problem and closed shop. The siew-mai lady however is still around, she has moved to the shop opposite of the old one and has a thriving business.
I have visited her stall till today. She knows me like a brother as I have brought my wife there, and also my kids. Whenever I travel down south to work, the Melaka pit-stop is a must. And I'll ta-pau for the family some good siew-mai.
So, the next time you are in Melaka, check-out an old restaurant just next to the Ramada hotel. The shop faces a theatre which is closed down. Their wan-tan mee is also superb. They have a special dumpling soup which you must try.

Agree with you. The horchien was the best..wonder if there's anyone else who makes that good a horchien anywhere else in Melaka nowadays..used to ask my grandma to drive me to tapau every weekend..sometimes kena marah from my mum for 'hassling' my grandma..and for deliberately 'reserving' an empty stomach for supper.:p
Have not tasted the siew mai for a long long time..but I remember them being smaller in size, comparing to the usual ones at dimsum shops..nice and tasted so home-made..humm..that is where my stomach would be heading to on my next trip back to Melaka. :)
am remembering the melaka siew mai more vividly now..they've always tasted better with some small cut cucumbers..and the chilies are very typical of melaka..could add it to any dry noodles or as a dip..have bought a bottle from the 'yee kiaw' auntie for rm1.50..

Hey Ski..I sorta grew up in Portugese Settlement..lived there for about 5 years..let me see..from std 2 - 6 and studied at the only secondary school there.. Sacred Heart (now known as Canossa Convent)..
During those times my buddies and I would always 'eat out'..wah..like real only huh..ok lar now we call it 'lepak' after school hours at this house (not a shop) where this Portugese uncle makes the best mee and meehoon goreng in the world..practically nothing much in it just bean sprouts and eggs..and it's dark and glossy and so tasty..we would ask for extra chilies and add vinegar into it. Yes! vinegar!
Till today I still miss it..and makes me wonder.. why the simplest and most wonderful things in life don't last..and can never be replaced.. :o
Yes, have tried some of the Portugese restaurants there but somehow I think they're a little over-priced..but nice panorama no doubt..(I hope the sea is still viewable from there) considering the many changes in Melaka for the past decade or so..

Hi Ahmad! this is posted by RolyPoly yesterday..

Hope you could find those places.. :) My favourite would still be Makko.
Agree with you. The horchien was the best..wonder if there's anyone else who makes that good a horchien anywhere else in Melaka nowadays..
Never tried the horchien near Ramada...but as far as I know, there is this horchien shop along Jln Bunga Raya. If you were to drive down Jln Bunga Raya, there is an alleyway on the right, somewhere midway down that street. The first stall sells killer horchien. They've been running the business for as long as I can remember, and the recipe has been passed down from father to son. So it is possibly more than 30 years old! They open at 8 p.m onwards and there is usually a long 'q' up until closing time...which would be around midnight. Thinking about it makes my tummy go growling..... :p
Hi Veez. Like your signature.
I wonder if this 'killer horchien' uncle is related to the Ramada Horchien..Melaka is a small town.
Your stomach growling? Mine is making engine noise..:p
Talking about Jalan Bunga Raya food stalls ..I remember one nice Hokkien mee but could not confirm if it's still there..
Humm...anyone knows the best mamak in Melaka? Or is there none at all?
the more i follow this thread the more i bei tah han la..... :D gotta go melaka this raya holiday la....

my top food places in m'cca:-
1. chicken riceball - a small coffeeshop along jln temenggong. just after the traffic lights and ramada along the main road.
2. durian cendul - a really small shop along jln bunga raya; tan kim hock rates 2nd and falling...
3. sate celup - capitol
4. mee "pedas" (with/without vinegar) - a sidelane along bkt china
but going to m'cca this hari raya is a no-no - jam-lah, no parking, long wait for a table, to be served & the worst, food jatuh standard during the "rush"! better go on a normal day but check first when these places are closed.
happy eatin' :)

Sieh sieh Peng Kheng...wow...ya got drivers one ah... :o
I've checked with some friends...no good mamaks in Melaka, like the ones we have here. Anyway the last thing i wanna eat in Melaka is mamak food..
KH, I'd like to check out the mee 'panas'..would you believe I've never heard of this? :)
yes....wanna try durian cendol....syoknya....cant go during raya? amacam...only that time free la....aiyo....like this susah la....wanna have riceball chicken rice too....preferably without chicken la...just the rice ball enough la, so compact... :D beh tah han liao lor.... :D
Haha..yes yes sly..go go sly..do justice to your tummy sly.. :p slurp..can you imagine the chicken riceball..fresh and aromatic..dip it a little sly..into the chili lar.. and take your time to chew..pls don't choke ah!..and take another..and another..hey, i could take up to 10 ok! :p
and the durian chendol ar...terribly...nice.. :D.. just imagine durian itself is nice liao..some more added into a bowl of icy, cooling, wholesome chendol...yumm..
For what it's worth, i hope you would really enjoy your trip to Melaka..take your G for a romantic walk on the beach too.. don't forget to remember huh! :) and capture the moments...
Making a trip to Malacca now is easy and fast, now with the new road between the Alor Gajah to Bandar Malacca, but too many traffic junctions though. Happy eating, me too might drive there for some nonya food and chendol and go hear the sea waves. ;)
Yes lar Ski...too many junctions in Melaka nowadays...and the traffic lights...but to be on the positive side...we could take time to appreciate the views...Melaka is quite a romantic town don't you think? Have fun whoever is planning on a trip...Please huh, come back and tell me what you've got in that stomach of yours. Hehe.... :p
I can't go back..because I'm on a 3 day fruit diet..(what an excuse) and like real only...too much food last week...wanna look and feel better and also to prepare my tummy for Raya visits..haha.. :o
u guys here did a very good job on promoting melaka...way to go guys....next round which state?

ooo..my kampung...personally i'm localised....so usually we go back to my mum's kampung near morib.....while still have the chance....
Q: do u think one day we will only talk about balik kampung like the way we talk about our good old days....?

Good ole days good ole food balik kampung to mum's cooking...humm..yes Sly, why not huh..that's the sweetest thought..guess we're the fortunate ones..some have lost their mummy and only left with memories..we talk about them the best we could..the best we know how..:) never too late..
Thanks Sly..now I'm missing both my parents..again.
Hey..how about starting a new thread on Brief Childhood Memories? You think anyone would respond at all? After you. :p
mon, i think we have to get master orchi to start it for us.... :) remembered very well his story about 'ah ngau'... :D
just woke up this morning and the first thing that came into me is where to get chicken rice ball in subang ar? cant wait to go melaka la.... :D no durian cendol yet so i went to have the one opposite subang parade.... :o tambah nasi pulut... :D
:p Sly-mee, no such prerogative at all in Subang. Used to have one in Taipan (next door to Ah Koong's Fishball rest.) a couple of years back but it was nowhere, flat tasting lack of flavour kinda chicken riceballs. Guess we have no choice but to go to 'Malakak'..where it's just heavenly..
Seriously I could tapau for you the next time. I did it before..but cucumbers must be separated or else like my mum says..'chow souk'..and knowing me, I might still devour it up anyway! hehe..
Sly, if you were to go during Raya, you have to be a little early. Like before 9am. Can wake up ah? After that hour it'll be packed and you might get into an emotional stress having to stand to wait for tables while watching others eat their hearts out! hehe...it could be real torturing.. :o
One chicken riceball you should probably never never try is the Famosa Chicken Riceball in Jonkers Street. ;)

We're living in a food haven Sly.. :)
On your way to Melaka, you could make a stop in Seremban. You could check these few places out. (1,2,3 tops)
1. Seremban Beef Noodles at the Seremban wet market.
2. Seremban Hakka Noodles (same address as above)
3. Lou Shue Faan (ratz tail!) at Jln Temiang. Shop's name is "Yi Po Lou Xu Fen"
4. Crab at "Fu Yong Xiu Hai". Lobak.
5. Vege food at Jln Temiang. Called "Hong Cha Yun"
.. no wonder Malaysia is called the meeting point for both the Western and Eastern cultures..a true melting pot where we could find a variation of frenzy, mouth-watering, yummy food and dishes, exotic even..
Aren't we fortunate..I believe the westerners love our food just as much..:)
