You may like to read up on some backgound on hubs/switches and routers from this link....

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq/4.1+NAT#449

You better have a good understanding of networking and security if you wants to use a hub/switch..

For home use, a router, especially a 4-port switch router like the popular Linksys brand is a good choice. It is pretty easy to set up and offers pretty good security. Get one with wireless capability, you won't regret it. Go to an authorised vendor and ask them questions..

Just read up on broadband router security from the net and always update your browser, OS and anti-virus softwares regularly. That should do it....welcome to broadband bliss, ungkb!

Cheers!
