Comics does not necessarily equate to Loh-Fu-Tze or the Beano and Dandy varieties. Did you know that there are graphic novels which are highly priced? And I do not mean Stan Lee's Spiderman or DC's Batman. In US and Europe, there are very specialised graphic novels and they are read by executives rather than by school kids.

wow! hebat, u answered everything before I even asked. haha! nope I am not into comics. But I am not saying that it's bad either. Good to space out your mind after a hectic day. No long sentences, just colourful pictures. and it's not time consuming or requires a lot of effort and concentration. hmmmm... so do you drink nescafe or teh tarik while at it? hmm?

Comics aren't really a waste of time.
I grew up on Beano and Dandy.
They were (and still are) British comics targetted at school kids.
Besides kiddie pranks (re: "The Bash Street Kids" and "Dennis the Menace"), they also had one page on general knowledge where I learnt a lot of stuff thru'out my impressionable primary school years. It also gave me a good grounding on English despite the fact that I was in English stream schools back then. Comics made acquiring the language so much easier and natural (no need for boring grammar lessons).
Any of you have good memories to share?

i like dik cerdas and asterix obelix..tin tin also i like...Lat cartoon is funny also...
I used to like Dandy & Beano too. I preferred Beano and wanted to have a pet dog like Gnasher an Abyssinian wire-haired tripehound!! Back in the late 70s/early 80s it used to cost 50 sen a copy. My cousins also gave me their comics from the UK (from the 70s) for girls, sorry ...can't remember the name.
I also got into marvel comics, especially SpiderMan. I subscribed to all 4 - The Amazing Spiderman, Web of Spiderman, ...aiyah...forgot the other 2 names. After about a year plus, i stopped....couldn't afford anymore. I have the first edition of Web of Spiderman and the issue where Spidey got married to Mary Jane. (not mint condition lah....)
I didn't quite get into Tin Tin but I absolutely love Asterix, between me and my brother, I think we have the whole series!
As for Lat cartoons, my dad was a PR man and was close to press people. Lat was with NST then, so all my Lat books are signed personally by Lat himself.

I'm a fan of calvin and hobbes, and that pesky office drone Dilbert.
Doraemon was pretty amusing as well during school going days.
Anyone remember Mr.Kiasu and his brother Kiase? Does that constitute comics?

I love those japanese / hongkee anime comics............so so revealing. :D Movie versions available as well.
And Dilbert is who I look to for management techniques.
I grew up on my brother's collection of Archie, Beano, Dandy, Tin Tin etc....now they're somewhere can't remember where..all torn and tattered maybe!
Like the boy and his tiger Calvin and Hobbes..wouldn't want Calvin as my kid tho'! Hobbes is sweet..

Isn't it a shame that Calvin&Hobbes and CharlieBrown have been discontinued many years ago? We are getting reruns, if you hadn't noticed.

Charlie brown creator , Mr schulz died of colon cancer on 2000 something.

So, I take it you guys never heard of DC Vertigo then? Neil Gaiman's Sandman? Alan Moore's Swamp Thing and Watchmen? Fables? The Authority?

I do remember the sandman and swamp thing but not the others.
I remembered that the sandman and swamp thing didn't quite catch on. Actually, I just stopped following those characters as they did not appeal to me.
My challenge to your memory - did you remember Dr. Strange and the Watcher? If my memory isn't too scattered, I think they started as end-pieces in the Spiderman comics. However Steve Ditko was a one-kind (weird) artist but he did make Dr. Strange and the Watcher quite unique.

I am sorry, but I have never read much of the mainstream superhero comic books, especially ones from Marvel. I read Kingdom Come and loved it, but I don't think that is what you would call mainstream.
The rest of the stuff are pretty new and current. Fables is the story of what happens when beloved Bedtime storybook and fairy tale characters get exiled to New York. The Authority is the continuation of Warren Ellis' StormWatch and is about a group of superheroes not afraid to use their powers to change the world by taking over governments and other such actions. There was also one story featuring Kuala Lumpur highlighting the domestic violence issues we often hear about in the news and Kisah Benar.
Maybe you were a little young when you read Sandman and Swamp Thing. They carry quite deep messages and I imagine would only be fully appreciated by adult minds. All of them took me several readings to fully understand the stuff carried in them and every rereading revealed something new. I suggest giving them another chance.
Other good titles are Planetary, Transmetropolitan, Warren Ellis' StormWatch (Not the old one), Hellblazer, and Legion of Super Heroes (both new and old). Good stuff, but, not for kids in more ways than the usual.

Is Dr. Strange the magician who own a magical book.......he's sure unique.......donno wat happen to him as spiderman series just run a few stories on him........
