As posted by Sunwaykid in the Malaysian Idol channel,

Hmmmm............nowadays there are software that allows SMS to be sent via scheduling. Just last weekend, my company sent out 350,000 SMS during the night for a new promotion via one server. The technology is there.

I have strong views against SPAM (unsolicited advertisments and messages) and now it is beginning to hit mobile phones! I personally think it is a dispicable act to do that. 350,000 at one go? I think the authorithies should act on this.

I agree with you, chang. I also notice that the spamming comes from the service provider itself...especially to promote some contests. I find that very irritating.

Few times I was receiving sms messages from NST about the news headlines for the day...I was wondering where this came from..cos I was very sure that I didnt subscribe to it. And I dont even read NST!!!

I did enquire about this from mobile service providers and was told there is a line in the contract agreement (and it isn't a fine line) that when a person signs the contract, it allows to from what I see as "SPAM" under the name of sms adverts. To that I was told that could be construed that way but the point of the matter was that I agreed to let them do it when I signed the contract so the matter was close. Very clever!

Eh.........Chang, i despise spam as much as you but the 350,000 in this particular case was sent to customers who are members of a loyalty club who has agreed to be pre-informed of any promotion. It was not unsolicited. :)

Every SMS, regardless of business model, carries a fee, like a postage stamp. That's the reason SMS will never become SPAM in the SPAM Email sense.

You will really feel the pinch (financially, that is) when you land in Changi Airport. All mobile companies, StarHub, Singtel and whatever will welcome you in one message and then tells you about their promotions in the second. Altogether 6 messages within the first 1-2 minutes in Singapore, thats S$3 or RM6.60 just for switching on your phone. Then as you select your network of choice, they will also send a msg of thanks, another RM1.10! In S'pore, the receiver of SMS msg are charged as well esp for phones from other countries.... :(

Last weekend, when RITA hit the land in Texas and Florida, I receive the same warning from CNN Alert at least 20 times, now thats not fair Ted Turner!

I went to Singapore many times and have received messages from their telco before,... can't remember SMS being charged to me. I think incoming calls are charged in Singapore, but not incoming SMS.
