I'm wondering what is the whole procedure of buying a new car and trading in my old car. Can I use the trade in value of my old car as downpayment? How will the loan be calculated? Can I continue driving my old car until my new car arrives?

There's a form you need to fill to inform JPJ on the sale of your vehicle if you want to avoid future summons. Check their website:-

My word of advice here.
Some years ago, i sold my car at my office basement to a used car delaer. This dealer saw a bargain, came, paid for in cash and i signed the MV3 form. End of story? No way Jose.
Fast-forward 4 years later, 3 police officers dropped into my family home late 1 night, armed with a warrant of arrest, for me. I was to be arrested for failing to turn up in court for a hit&run accident that killed a teacher on a bike(?).
next day I went to the balai HQ. Saw an old classmate who is a v senior cop. I do not have any document to back my innocense. My friend summoned the IO to his office and explained that I am his old friend from primary school and not way, am I a reckless hit&run driver...the IO and I adjourned to the staff canteen. After a TT and pisang goreng, I was temporarily cleared of the alleged offence.
The real story:
The second hand car dealer or the new owner somehow managed to forge the insurance cover note. This enabled him to renew the road tax every year with the car ownership/garnt still under my name. Thats why when the hit&run was investigated, my name came up...
The learning:
ALWAYS, repeat after me, ALWAYS insist on or prepare your own set of SALES&PURCHASE document. This simply states that you (name, ic, address) owner of car (number, registration, make) have sold the said vehicle to (name, addresss, ic, company chop) on such & such a date & time and therefore you are no longer responsible thereafter...blah blah blah...better yet, take a picture of the new owner standing next to the car (which I always do now... :D
Keep this S&P copy+picture with you for a LONG time...you can never tell.
If you do not have a top cop for friend, try explaining a basement sale of your car to an unknown person, years ago with no documentation and that you do not own the car anymore...tough but not impossible :D
good luck.
