I seem to have lost my original 'When in Jakarta ....' thread. So I'm starting a new one.
Just had a very short visit to Jakarta over the last couple of days. Must try: Nasi Padang, if you are a little adventurous. When you sit donw, they just put all the dishes on your table and you pick what you want to keep, and what you want to return. Special includes Kikir - cow skin. I like their green chilli-gilling.
Also, check out Pare'gu Yakiniku and Shabu-Shabu buffet outlets. It's clean and although the spread is not big, it is tasty. Each table has the Korean style (bulgogi) grill and steam boat. Similar to what we have in Malaysia. One difference is that when they start the grill, the first thing they do is put two big pieces of cow fat on it!
The marinated beef is good and so is the chicken skin satay. Needless to say, this is not the place for people with heart problems. They have vegetables and kimchee. There is also a soup tureen of prawn tomyam. Many years ago, I tasted Tom Yam in Jakarta and it was on of the worst tom yam I have ever tasted. This time, I was pleasantly surprised.
There are 3 Pare'gu outlets in Jakarta:
1) Jalan S. Iskandar, No 27 (Arteri Pondok INdah), Jakarta Selatan (Tel :723 8938)
2) Kedoya Center, Blok A, Kebun Jeruk, Jakarta Barat (Tel: 548 5507)
3) Jalan K H Wahid Hasyim, 41 B-C, Jakarta Pusat (Tel: 391 5456)
I went to the last one. It is located very near the Sari Pan Pacific hotel, and Pasaraya Sarinah which is on Jl. Mohammad Thamrin - a main artery in Jakarta.
The outlets are nicely decorated, air-conditioned, not fancy but good enough for a gathering with friends, family and customers. For 5 of us, we were charged about Rm168, inclusive of drinks. Not bad.
