This model very much in demand lah......by car thiefs and car jackers! I understand insurance co blacklist this model lah, must pay additional premium or install satellite monitoring. My friend lost hers in Pantai MC, together with steering lock and still replace it with another. So, there must be something about the car lah.

Except for our bolehland ploton, toyota cars normally has a shelf life of 5 years before being replaced with a newer model, in between, there is one cosmetic change. Altis, if I recall correctly is nearing the 5 years.

Err...there are plenty of vehicles like the altis...storms...rangers...hiluxs...crvs...unsers. ..even the kembaras...etc etc plying the roads of the neighbouring countries...

Ahem...all got malaysian made vehicle components stamped on the parts...

Using one since July 2002, done 106,000 km. No problem so far. The service centre stinks though.

why dont's you look at

1. Honda Civic. Only prob is the 1.7 is a bit coarse and loud and the 2.0's ride is harsh cos it's tuned to be sporty. Also interior space is not that good and the dash is basic.
2. Nissan Sentra - Nissan is rated tops in this year's JD power survey - meaning you can expect excellent customer service. I think both the civic and sentra are also approaching the end of their model lifespans
3. Chevy Optra 5 - smooth, good ride, but tire noise is apparent. Not very powerful though. Residual values may not be as good as the Honda
4. Honda Accord 2.0 - fork out a little extra compared to the Altis. Honda's service centres are supposed to be good
5. Citroen C4 - looks damn canggih. Residual values might be poor
6. Peugeot 307 SW - nice family car with a full glass roof.
7. Ford Focus - should be launched soon. Should be an excellent car - approx 120k for 1.8 sedan, 130k for 2.0 hatchback. Expected to be comfortable and safe

Just some options for ya... hope they help!

Early reviews of the Altis pointed to one problem, that is instability in breaking, the back part of the car tend to swing a little. I don't know whether it has been rectified.

I wish i can afford a Lexus....
but at the moment sonata is what I can consider....sit on it before quite nice.

honda stream is totally out, I tried yesterday up n downhill from fraser hill. the absorber was too bumpy. my friend vomited half way.
not meant for family car!
the body weight seems too light oso...not stable!
I think I expect for wrong performance cos I drive a pug now.
but in term of pick-up is Gud lah....just like kancil...

Go for Honda, Toyota or Nissan cars. Forget about Korean cars. Dont think even of Proton.

I had rode Toyota Altis before to Fraser's and Cameron using gear 2 to go down hill. No need brake :)

A good driver can avoid excessive braking on mountain passes. Clutch control.

Yup.... Read the "UMW Toyota Stinks....!" thread first before making your choice. I also suggest you test the expensive alarm system and whatever satellite system too. My wifey lost her Altis right in front of my very eyes at Subang Parade, immobiliser didn't work, alarm didn't work and what else didn't work. I'm not bashing Toyota for no apparent reason, there is a basis to what I have been saying. If there is no basis to what I write in here, those big gunz would have dragged me to court by now..... do you think they would be so nice as to invite me and wifey for lunch and even extend the current warranty for her new Camry? Tan Ku Ku loh.... :D

Again, I repeat. TOYOTA cars ain't that bad, its the after-sales service level, its the attitude of their staff, its the inadequacies of their service centres that really stink!

If I ask you whether I should be getting the Volvo S80, Merc E320, Beemer 528i perhaps you can suggest the LS430 as an alternative-lah... here we are trying to find something comparable to an Altis lah....... :p

If you are worried about your Altis being the hot favourite of car thieves, try Alfa Romeo, Skoda, Audi, Fiat, Citroen or Renault. :D

I just bought one ALtis 1.8 (end of Oct'07). The car alignment is out even after realignment done at Toyota service center. The car engine rusty all over the place when 1st day saleman and I inspect my new Altis. I point the rusty ex. pipe to service center manager, he told me that this is normal for Toyota car, no point to change it as it will become rusty even he change the new one. He persure me by using the reason where the car is currently owned by finance company (but I pay for monthly inslament). I got to down my car for services and on leave for few days (no car to work).Toyota sales and outlet manager said they could not help me after calling them. The power windows is claimed/stuck and worst than my 10 yrs Wira (sold). The CD player can not play at hot weather (installed at upper dashboard or right be low front mirror which expose to sunshine) and suspected due to mechanism part expended under hot sun, So I only use my CD player at Morning and raining day. I took pictures and feedback to Toyota (KL). So far no reply from them. 2 weeks after using the car, I feel that engine start become noisy as compare to day 1. He he, what can I do, sell as second hand car again after own it for 2 weeks? I am cheated after seeing so many good comment in internet. I got to make 2 appointment to resolve one issue, first appointment is purely for inspection, confirm what is going wrong and for them to decide to order spare part. Service center do not keep spare part. 2nd appointment will be after spare part arrive, and fix it. He he, on leave 2 days to fix one issue again. now more and more issue pop out, I expect to visit the service center in next whole year till part waranty expire.

Altis, if I recall correctly is nearing the 5 years.Wifey's brand new Altis (3-months old at that time in 2002) was stolen right in front of her eyes at Subang Parade... (read UMW Toyota Suxx Thread in this web forum). They have done nothing since then to improve security nor assured the Altis customers (and Fortuner and Camry...) of safety from car thieves.

If you look at the latest Vios introduction, its only a matter of months before the Altis comes in the shape of the much-lauded Lexus IS250 shape... the new Altis is very nice but UMW Toyota still suxx big time in terms of Customer Service!

what's the waiting period for the altis? Why wait? If you wait any longer, by the time you get your car delivered, it will be outdated! Go google and you will see the new Altis is like the Lexcus IS250 design, lagi canggih!

Thats also the problem with UMW Toyota, they themself make their own cars obsolete through this waiting period. Imagine how many thousands of units of sales lost to Honda Civis, Honda Accord, Honda CRVs...

Soon they will face the Nissan Latios and Mazda 2s and 3s. I think UMW Toyota's management team can do better.

UMW purposely make you wait.

While customers were being told to wait, at the same time, there're several hundreds of Altis & Vios in their store collecting dust.

The 2 stores I saw with plenty of inventory, 1 in Serdang Raya, another in Seremban.

You don't have to take your car to the service dept for a service if you find
that it sucks big time take it to your mechanic that you have known for years.

Yes, if he's good with electronics as well.

Mechanical stuff no problem.

Don't play play with electronics. The mechanics who're not well-trained can screw your car.

Its not just poor service and long queue at the various service centers, they even screw up simple thing like the Toyota On-Call Card! Two months sudah pun belum sampai...Maybe they wish to present it to you during the official opening of their new 3 S premise in Sg Pinang next year?
Each time I wanted to buy a car, Toyota is my 1st choice BUT I never get to buy one!
Not that the car is not good BUT the salesman and the service staff piss me off!
I end up buying Ford, Peugeot, Hyundai, Honda ... & merc.
My colleague bought a Camry and within 6 months a newer model was on the road. Subsequently 6 months later the new model was superseded by YET another new model!! :D
I got an earful from this colleague cos I recommend the camry to her. If not for the 'newer model' she has not much compliant on the car.

I was very surprise that Altis didn't go thru the 'newer model' cycle. I supposed Altis was not their bread winner as compared to the popular Vios and Camry.

I was very surprise that Altis didn't go thru the 'newer model' cycle. I supposed Altis was not their bread winner as compared to the popular Vios and Camry.I mentioned this in a previous thread that the folks at UMW Toyota is an irresponsible lot. They introduced the "new" Camry towards the end of 2004 as they were way behind for their year's target and they brought in enough to meet their sales target eventhough they were not ready to supply the market with the model with the demand. There was a long waiting period but then that Camry's market price deteriorated simply because a new "facelifted" model was on the road.

It happened again with the current model. The waiting list is so long that people who bought the Camry last year already lost about RM50,000 for their cars. They paid RM168,000 for their new Camrys last year and market price for a 2006 model is only around RM115,000.....

No, Toyota has lost one of its strong point ie good resale value eversince those folks in UMW Toyota started looking at numbers instead of customer satisfaction and delivering quality product and service...
