PETALING JAYA: The Haze situation worsens at Kuala Selangor and Port Klang with API readings reaching 531 and 529 respectively in the two areas.
The API reading at Putrajaya is 364, Shah Alam, 371 and Petaling Jaya is 349 and Kuala Lumpur is 321 as off 11am.
Selangor State Disaster Committee will meet at 1pm to discuss contigency measures while Health Minister Dr Chua Soi Lek said schools will be ordered closed when the API reading in the area reaches 300.
Unconfirmed reports said all schools in Selangor will be closed Friday and the state Education Department Is expected to issue a statement later Thursday.

I thought an Emergency is supposed to be declared when API reaches 500? But they're only going to have a MEETING now? :confused:

According to BBC, Malaysia has declared a state of emergency. What does it mean and what is its implications??
Malaysia haze triggers emergency
Malaysia has declared a state of emergency after air pollution in parts of the country reached danger levels.
Smoke from forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia has pushed an air pollution index over an emergency mark of 500.
A reading above 500 is judged extremely hazardous, and the haze has already prompted the closure of some schools.
Malaysian and Indonesian officials are to meet to discuss the fires, mainly caused by illegal land clearance on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
The readings over 500 have only been detected in the western towns of Port Klang and Kuala Selangor.
However, government officials said the state of emergency would extend inland to the entire Klang valley, covering the country's capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Schools in Kuala Lumpur have already been ordered to close because of worsening pollution.
Fighting fire
The BBC's Malaysia correspondent, Jonathan Kent, says the acrid smog that has enveloped Kuala Lumpur and cities nearby shows no sign of lifting.
On Wednesday, Malaysia's government said that an air pollution reading of over 500 would automatically prompt the declaration of a state of emergency.
That in turn could prompt the government to order the closure of all non-essential government and private workplaces.
With stock markets falling and hospitals inundated with people complaining of eye, throat and chest problems, Malaysia is offering Indonesia help to put out the fires that are causing the problem.
The two countries' leaders spoke on Wednesday, and ministers and are due to meet on Sumatra, where some 300 hot spots are being monitored.
Malaysian officials would say only that there is a definite willingness to co-operate.
Authorities in Kuala Lumpur and parts of the state of Selangor have decided to close schools in the worst affected areas for two days.
Students in schools that remain open are being told to stay in their classrooms, drink warm water and wear masks if they have to venture outdoors.
Our correspondent says there is no silver lining to this smog for those students who been told to stay at home.
They will have to make up for missed lessons on Saturdays once the pollution has eased.

now is time to discuss when to have a meeting to discuss what to do with the situation , that's called "state of emergency"
Before meeting starts , patient is DEAD......... :confused:

Funny that the emergency is reported in the foreign media. Did a check on thestar and bernama but found nothing. Whats going on? Can someone ask the govt to be more accountable rather than cracking down on rumour-mongering?
They need a meeting to discuss what an emergency is and it would take them to sit a few more times to decide on what to do. They are all a bunch of c0ck talkers.
the reason why we have not received official word regarding the declaration of emergency is quite simple. In the meeting they're in right now, it's actually an observation session. A collection of birds representing the bio-diversity in M'sia is our canary or in other words, haze-gauge are cooped up and observed.
When the birds start having problems flying, or aren't actively flying, the API is at unhealthy level.
When the birds start hopping or walking or sleeping/coma, it's at dangerous level.
When the birds keel over and pass on, an autopsy will be done (checking lung contents, weighing it, etc) will be conducted and only then will it be at DISASTER level.
Going with the logic that birds have smaller mass and are more sensitive to pollutants as compared to bigger mass beings, apes for example, they will be able to determine in advance if our health in under threat well before any adverse effects upon our health.
See, our ministry is truly looking after us. Now, we're just waiting for the birds to fall from the sky.
So everyone, heads up, eyes wide open, and report in with any UFO (unknown falling objects; no ice please).

I think these kinds of news have to go through the standard censorship clearing... That will take a few days.
I mean, as late as yesterday, highly intelligent Najib said that government won't release API figures since it can scare away tourists....

Nobody wants to take the responsibity.. health minister waiting for Najib .. waiting for PM.. just shows that we dun really have any proper emergency communications protocol or procedure in place.

Just saw the TV1 news at 4pm. They interview someone at the Metrological Dept. The lady said that today the couldn't do any cloud seeding as the Subang airport closed. Cause of that their airplane grounded.

The condition in USJ last nite around 6.30pm an the bridge before Summit.
You can see (almost) HeiTech Village building.
My camera also find it difficult to auto focus....

it looked more like it's closer to 8pm rather than 6pm. We have daylight/haze savings time now?
