The air these few days are soooo bad I have decided I really need a 'breather'. I am thinking of getting myself a Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifier for my room as my sinus is 'killing' me! The Sharp air filter is different from the rest because it has this Plasmacluster which is supposed to eliminate microorganism in the air.
The market retail price is about Rm1599, but I am confident if there are a number of you who are also keen, I should be able to negotiate a much better price for it. You can read about the Sharp air filter at:http://www.sharpusa.com/files/pur_dow_AirPurifierBro.pdf
So if you too are interested, lets do ourselves a favour. Please indicate your interest by email. Provide me your hand phone number too so that in case I need to contact you urgently to let you know what is the best price I can get. Then IF you are still keen, I will collect payment, and personally collect the filter from Sharp and then we can arrange for collection of the filter after that. So those keen, please email me quickly and urgently. Latest by Friday 5 August. I am suffocating in my sleep from the filthy air environment!!

How about instead of spending that $$, go for a holiday somewhere far away till the haze eases off. Koh Samui, Phuket, Vietnam, Camerons???
Just a wild suggestion though! :D

in citiez where d air pollution iz bad, ppl drink a lotta green tea 2 detoxify their system.... i guess it helpz oso.... ;)
I was kinda keen until I did the math...
A 1bhp airconditioner with
-an outdoor casing made of metal,
-several kilo of aluminium fins, copper piping, valves, et al
-a powerful rotary compressor
-a 12"(or so) fan motor and blade.
-an indoor unit with alunimuim fin and copper piping
-filters - either simple mesh type, or plasmacluster + carbon filter
-a small fan motor + blower
- electronic PCBs, one for outdoor, one for indoor, plus various sensors
- a remote control
All for RM800-900
whereas a Sharp Plasmacluster air purifier contains:
- a plastic housing
- a small fan motor and blade
- a set of filters(pre-filter, paper/electrostatis filter, carbon filter)
- plasmacluster(whatever it is made of)
- various sensors + PCB
- remote control
Goes for RM1599-RM1899
Hmmm, what is the logic of the pricing??? :D

Plus who knows how long the purifying can last?!!! 1 month? Or 2?
You might as well lock yourself in your house!!!
And for the last few days, the air has improved a BIT wat!

Cameron's air have a sh!tty smell from the fertilizer used and is about 3hr drive away. Genting's have that fouling, choking smell of vehicle exhaust n burning brake pads but is only an hours drive. That leaves only Frazer's hill with all the sweet misty air but without much to do except taking a walk around looking for little birds along the way with travelling of an hour n a half.
Whatever it is, a normal dust filter with ioniser may do the some good in filtering the suspended dust. The price seems to be quite Sharp ..true to it's name...for an integral unit .....:p

Hi there, if you're currently having sinusitis, I don't think that any Plasmacluster can ease your problem. Only antibiotics can now help you clear your nasal tubes.
Besides, having a plasmacluster does not guarantee that you'll not have sinusitis anymore, since you may get the germs elsewhere, while you're not at your bedroom or house.
I would like to suggest that instead of having to pay for a pricy equipment, which is only effective up to a certain square area, you can talk to your doc about using 'Nasacort' (a nasal spray to decongest blocked nose), if you're having allergic rhinitis (the most common allergic response nowadays). Another more conventional method (less harmful) is to take antihistamines (ie. actified). As long as you've blocked nose & you've done nothing to unblock it, then you'll risk sinusitis eventually.
There's however something you should know - which is to air your bedroom & your entire house everyday, coz indoor pollution is much more harmful (more concentrated) than outdoor.
Of course, if you still insist on a plasmacluster in your room, then a Sharp Plasmacluster air-con or any other brands which has an electrostatic filter, can do the same job at a much lower cost. Not unless, your intention is to cover most of the entire ground or upper floor area in your house, otherwise that RM1599 unit is not necessary.
Cheers,
Nina :)

Thanks for the advice MOYSC. Most of which I have been doing. We also vacuum the bedroom very, very often.
Right now I take antihistamine to clear my nose. Today seem to be much better. Obviously my nose condition ties in with the haze index! The advantage is I dont need to check on the air index....my nose will tell me!! ;-) That's what we call looking at the bright side of things!! Ha ha!!
I use the air cleaner RM50 plus oni and add a lil bit of lemon all its take!!
RM1k plus for a air purifier:eek:, i rather stay in my room and switch my aircond full blast!!! :D
Patrick, for your case, probably a 3M face mask will be more effective to block out all the dust and smoke particles. Application of Rhinocort or Nasacort as suggested by MOYSC may be advisable if u have allergic rhinitis. These sprays contain very minute amounts of steroid and is generally without side effects, use it under a doctor's supervision!
I use Nasonex or Rhinocort sprays once in a while when the runny and itchy nose gets really unbearable. But somehow or rather, Im not affected these 2 days, lucky me! :D Then again, i stay indoors most of the time.
An air purifier may be desirable if u got the budget, it's use is most suited for smoky environments such as offices or dusty smelly rooms, as u can't take it with u everywhere. Within a regularly cleaned and airconditioned bedroom or home, it is a nice extra if it helps u to sleep easy at night.
With an allergic nose already acting up, I doubt the nose would calm down by itself without any medical intervention, even if u hv fresh clean air. Clean air however, will help to prevent any recurrance once the symptoms has been cleared.
Ya, Rhinocourt works. I'm on that for 15years (when necessary)
Get a good mask if you need to be outdoor. I had one on on Tuesday.
I got stock of a dozen or so hospital grade 3M masks that costed a bomb way back during the SARS scare, still unused. This would be a good time to use them up.
btw, does anyone know that Horseradish is good for congested nose? I bought some recently (tablets) but haven't taken it regular enough to see any difference.

Thanks, thanks, thanks for all the advice.
You guys cant imagine how sensitive my nose can be sometimes. On Tuesday morning when the haze appeared, I didnt even know about it. I was happily in my study, with the aircond on...as always. Then suddenly, my nose started 'running' and my eyes became watery. And I still didnt know why! When my wife came into the study, I told her I thought the air around the apartment must be polluted! She laughed and pulled up the blinds in my study to show me the haze. Oh my gosh!!!! It was like it was fogged up outside!! So my nose sensed the environment before I even knew about it!!! Dont play, play with my nose!!
And most of the time I can even smell when the rain is coming....believe it or not!!

oh dear that's serious.... all the medicine might be good to cure the symptoms but it can't be good for the long term right? is there a better solution? would taking supplements and Vit C help? my boyfriend is very sensitive to dust. But he's supplements have helped control it.

Actually, I was surprised Patrick turned up at the TT session in the flesh! I thought he would be all masked with breathing apparatus and looking like Darth Vader ;) but he was OK. The air pollution index must have been back to normal last night.

well patrick, if you are interested, may be i can try to arrange for a loan set for you to try out...
Apparently a lot of appliance stores are enjoying brisk sales of air purifier units these 2 days until they are now back ordered.
Patrick, how are you coping with this thick haze today?

i've bought a salt lamp recently. Not sure whether it works...the air feels....normal to me.
anyway, i bought mine for $140 ..a 5 kg one...quite big...
The -ve ions released into the air near the waterfalls or hills are the result of millions of tonnes of water gushing thru hundreds of km of streams, over billions of tons of rock, crevices, with the added forces of millions/billions of kilowatts of sun and wind energy, etc, etc... Im not a scientist but u get the picture. :p
a 3-5kg piece of rock or so called 'salt lamp' ain't gonna ionize your whole room and make it full of ions or feel like the great outdoors. Especially when all it had was a 15watt light bulb and no electronic gizmo to generate ions like an electronic ionizer.
Let's just say u've just bought a beautiful piece of natural quartz rock for decoration. I hope they didn't have to destroy mother nature to get to that piece of quartz tho.

Boy what a relieve up in Genting Awana these last few nights! Clear sky day and night. Manage to throw in two jogs a day to make up for the many days I didnt manage to jog. Boy, one never appreciates blue sky and clear nights so much until we are hit by the haze. Just to lie in bed at night and gaze up at Genting Casino in all its splendour was so thrilling!!
And just before I escaped from KL, got myself the Sharp air purifier. Good product. Managed to use it for two nights before I went up to the mountains. Will tell you all more about the Sharp purifier later as I just got back.
Catch up with you all later. Good night!
Good timing, Patrick, the haze was the worst the past 3 days and just clearing up a little today. I too bought an air cleaner/purifier and happy with it, though I was reluctant at first to pay such a high price for such a rudimentary device, but preservation of health makes more sense than ringgit and sens. Anyway I got a damn good deal for it, hehehe. :D

Hi,
I think you need a Hega Air Purifier instead of HEPA (Sharp) because HEGA systems can filter particle up to 0.0001 micron & with efficiency up to 99.98% at 0.1 micron, while HEPA only filter until 0.3 micron. Your nose sensitive problem not only caused by Haze, but also caused by the indoor pollution. Pollutants like dust mites is the most killing.
More information about indoor air pollutions at: http://www.airpure.blogspot.com
:p
Hi Ernest teoh,
Mind telling us more about the Elkare air filter? I tried to call the h/p number in the link but it was busy. Where can i buy this wonderful product and how much? I may need an air purifier unit for the living+dining room, is this unit powerful enough for a big room?
Thanks much!

If you already has an air-cond which has filter, it makes sense to add a Salt Crystal lamp or two in the room where you sleep, study. Salt Crystal emits negative Ions when it is heated (by the little lamp embbeded in it). The aircond helps to circulate the ions around. Try it! it only costs RM100 to RM300. Can buy a 5 pieces with RM1500.

Good for you PJS. I got myself an air purifier too - a Sharp Plasmacluster Air Purifier. The air was sooo bad, I could smell the foulness even in the aircond room! Decided that it was worth investing in a good purifier considering that the air was going right into our lungs. It is like driving a car without an air filter! If we are prepared to spend so much on our car, what the heck is a little more for our body!! Anyway, I am happy with the Sharp Purifier I bought. I didnt know that it not only purifies the air. It also generates positive and negative ions forming cluster ions. And when these cluster ions encounter airborne substances such as viruses, bacteria, odour and mold, they detoxify and reduce them into harmless substances! The design is very catchy and modern and the set now stands proudly in my study, bedroom or wherever I am! See the attachement of the purifier....lawa hah? No regrets at all buying one!

I have been importing Crystal Salt Lamps for the past 5 years and currently the ONLY research house in Malaysia for this products. I just came across this forum and find it interesting ... if anyone still interested to get a salt lamp for health purpose can have a chat with me :-)

sorry to resurrect this old thread but i'm thinking of buying an air filter.. how has your sharp air filter been keeping up? can you update on the maintenance cost? did it break down on you and if it did how much did it cost you to repair.
