Can some one professional/with know how, help me upgrade my whole computer system?
I am stuck with the win98 SE. My cd rom and fl disk drives don't work. The "b#$@&*!!y" thing hangs every 15 mins. "(I am now using Acer, OEM)
What I basically need are,
complete cpu with the latest windows operating system,
cd burner,
bigger memory,
faster pentium.
An all in one fax/scanner/printer.
and all necessary programs so that I do not need to go thru the upgrading process until 5 years later.

The question is, how much is all this going to cost? "Cost" being the operative word since I am on a tight budget.
Thanks

From your description on your requirement , you would definitely need to get a new set. That will definitely be faster without knowing your present cofiguration, whether it is upgradable..

Win98se is not the problem. The acer hardware is, after all these time. Bad sectored hdd , ram? Or it may be just a bad connection or your pc is infested with adware ,trojans, viruses and a complete messup if you are experimenting into games.
Open up and blow the dust away if you haven't try. Re-install your win98 again....and as a last resort backup everything , reformat the hdd , reinstall everything or go and get a new set....

Done all the mentioned, looks like I have to fork out some $ to get a new one.
What brand would you recommend? I got the present one late 1999.
My keyboard and monitor works fine, wouldn't be wiser (or not?) to just get a new cpu?

Thanks

You really need a new computer.
For me, I'm running on windows xp, Pentium 3, 667 Mhz (overclocked to 1.3 Ghz currently), and 640 mb of ram.

Hard to say what can be scavenge from the old unit. Monitor, keyboard, mouse, hdd, casing if atx type, cdrom....that would almost be all.

Wo...wo...that would set anyone back rm570 for Amd64 3ghz n rm300+ for moboard , rm400 for a 200gig hdd. But that's entry level for top of the line for freaky gamers. More economical would be Sempron.

New motherboard RM215 (abit nf7) or 250 (abit nf7-s)
Sempron 2600 RM305... or secondhand RM250, take secondhand also ok cos CPU dont wear out (it either works/not).
1GB RAM.. (512x2) Kingston VR RM170x2

DIY or otherwise? That would be the first question. Computers comes with a multitude of problems, hard and soft. No shop would be able to support someone that have to be told n guide to push the power on button for the system to work. If that is needed then surely have to pay for it. But if you have nimble fingers n someone with some knowledge on hard n soft then it may be worth having a DIY. You save quite a bit as well by kicking out the middleman makan.
Computerwar in SS2 for full diy PC n PC Galore in SS15 for ask and configure yourself... Or further away , go to Low yat plaza to feast on the options n varieties....:p

what is your primary purpose for your rig? Gaming? Office work? A little of both?
If you can, state the kind of software you plan to use

AMD
----
their sockets are pretty much in a flux
Socket A is EoLed
S754/939 is probably going the way of the dodo if the M2 is right

Intel
----
socket plans are more stable

S478 is EoLed
LGA775 is their mainstay now

Summary:
AMD will be cheaper in the short run if you don't plan on upgrading your processor within 2-3 years since you can go with Socket A.
If you go Intel, you're probably going with the LGA775 socket and you can upgrade to those dual cores down the road.

If you're not into gaming and probably will not upgrade the processor in the next 2-3 years, my choice will be:

Processor: AMD Sempron 3000+
M/board: Abit NF7-M (builtin video, sound, network)
Memory: 2 sticks of PC3200. Brands like Apacer, Kingston, Corsair are quite cheap and good
Harddisk: 160GB (preferably come in 2 platter) with 8MB cache. SATA/PATA, your choice.
CD burner: A good burner can be had under RM150. Alternatively, there are dvd burners available at low 300s
Case + PSU: RM150

I think that's about it. Shouldn't cost more than RM2k. Should be much lower than 2k.
