The sport of basketball is fast catching in popularity given the response given to the third ADUN SUBANG JAYA CUP Basketball Tournament 2005 formerly known as the Lee Hwa Beng’s Cup. This years tournament based on knock outs drew 14 teams which started off in late April. This was also the first time all games were played at the same venue using the USJ 6 court.

The tournament, which was mooted by YB Dato’ Lee Hwa Beng, State Assemblyman for Subang Jaya, is opened to only teams comprising residents within his constituency i.e. Subang Jaya, part of USJ and Sunway. Dato’ Lee said: “The ADUN Subang Jaya Cup Basketball Tournament 2005 will be a regular feature in Subang Jaya’s sports calendar, since this constituency itself is endowed with at least 20 basketball courts for basketball enthusiasts. The Tournament itself will prove very exciting for both the players and spectators – even more so as this event is organised by the residents themselves for fellow residents and I want to encourage as many residents to come and watch the matches in support of their respective community teams.”

The tournament was conducted in accordance with the Rules of the International Basketball Federation. There was no registration fee for participating teams. Instead, each participating team was given a RM500 subsidy to offset the respective teams’ preparatory expenses such as the jerseys and balls.

After a grueling 19 matches over a period of two and the half months, the final saw a duel between USJ 6 home team trouncing last year’s defending champion USJ 14 with a score of 85-56 when the final whistle was blown. In an earlier matches to decide the third and fourth placing, USJ 13 routed USJ 4 with a clear margin of 74-47. The attendance for the final saw some 100 people enjoying a good game of basketball. For next years’ game, Dato Lee said the it will revert to the original format played on home and away matches. He added that this format will allow more residents in Subang Jaya more opportunity to host matches and visit each other and build better rapport among Subang Jaya residents.

Dergahayu Sdn Bhd was the tournament’s main sponsor while the co-sponsors were Spalding, Sprite, Milo and Water Shop. The tournament would not have ended successfully if not for the good work put in by the Organising Committee made up of all the team managers led by the organising chairman Loo Chin Oon. For the past four months, Mr Loo was with his basketball family from the planning stage till the prize gving. After the prize giving ceremony he was heard to have said he now will have to spend quality time with his other family.
