Lactose intolerance is common amongst Chinese. We somehow lose the lactase needed to break up lactose (milk sugar). We do not "lose" lactose intolerance as we get older. We actually develop intolerance. when we were babies, we are able to guzzle milk becoz we have lactase but as we grow older, some of use become intolerant. However, if one was to take milk in small amounts and increase the "dosage", one can reverse the intolerance. If children grow up withoutout stopping milk, they may maintain their lactase tolerance. Any info from the docs to clarify or correct my assumptions?

Would this condition also mean that the people suffering from lactose intolerant cannot eat foods cook with milk as well? like the Lasagna, Spaghetti Carbonara and cheese??

Can a person suffering form it actually grow tolerant of it?

FYI, I found out I was intolerent many years ago when I took a whole pint of fresh milk - diarrhoea within 1 hour! However, if I consume smaller amounts of milk, I am OK. So one actually needs to know one's tolerance level.

Read the first link above - it tells you how the bacterium in fresh yoghurt helps people with lactose intolerance

Sometimes I think that these things happen (ie. lactose intolerance, allergy to nuts, etc) to human due to the changes in environment and technology advancement which affect or mutate the human genes and cells. We do not have so many cases during our grandfathers' time or I might be wrong.... maybe they were no awareness back then.

I'm sorry Cherry, but genetic mutation takes generations to evolve. We find rapid mutation in bacteria because one generation in bacteria is perhaps a few minutes' duration.

You are right about awareness. That is a big factor in our perception of "abnormal" occurances sometimes.

However, back to the genetic issue, we cannot deny that when the child is conceived, there may be transcription errors in the genetic code during cell replication which could bring about abnormalities. Some causes of the transcription errors could be due to chemicals or environmental factors. So Cherry, you could be right in the first place, except that it is not "mutation" per se.

Ahem...back to possible means of treating lactose intolerance...err...the old Chinese folklore has this to say..."treat poison with poison"...can do ar...?! :o

Had to extract this from the other thread... Is this possible? Can we use you,Alexius Lim, as a test subject??

Like say we give you a cup of Milo every 2 hours for 1 week. then move up to 1 cup of nescafe every 1 hour. Then teh tarik every 1/2 hour...:D
