Hi guys... I am thinking of getting a new air-con, probably panasonic, with O2 or S2 puritee models.... Anyone had installed these air-con models already?? Or any other brands/model of air-con to recommend???
Thanks in advance....

I heard that Panasonic air-con now got 2 batches, one is Malaysia made, another is China made... China made goods are generally inferior in term of QA...

National changes name to Panasonic now .Their air cons are manufactured in our own backyard ..Mashu****a . I would say Panasonic is one among the best . Quiet ,reliable and good rustfree compressor even after 14 yrs at 8hrs continous running every working day . York compressor becomes noisy after a few years . Acson compressor fan failed after abt 2yrs from our 4 unit installation. Sanyo compressor rusted badly .Carrier seems to be as good as National/Panasonic in all respect. All these info from my office installation of over 15yrs.

National USED to be good and I am one satisfied customer. However, recently, I have heard that it isn't so good as before. Anyone can verify?
National shd still be one of the best aircond brands, even if there are some faulty units sometimes, it will be very rare. Their products available locally are mostly made in Malaysia & Thailand. Sometimes u will get the outdoor unit(compressor) made in Thailand and indoor units from Malaysia. But the quality level is high. All the aircond technicians out there will vouch for National(Panasonic) just like car mechanics vouch on Toyotas.
I've had 3 units National a/c for 4 yrs now but 1 of them has become noisy after 2 yr+ and I changed the indoor motor bearings few months back for a king's ransom but the bearing noise came back again after a month. Will see what happens next before I call for service.
I made a mistake of not calling National directly which i know will provide good and efficient service with warranty. I was pretty much held on the chopping board by that unscrupulous dealer.  And to think that I've bought a water filter from him for RM300+ earlier, and a toilet float for RM90  when Ace sold same item for RM45! I think we shd hv a complaints forum for members to voice their issues with aircon/appliances repairer, plumbers, electricians, contractors, etc. I've had so much problems with home appliances lately! :( Anyway, sorry I sidetracked!
Acson and York are made under the same roof in OYL. Quality is so so, sometimes good, sometimes bad. They specialise in commercial aircond though. For home split units, they made so much changes over the years we can't generalise which batch/model is the best. To give u some indication, they source their fan motors from China, and compressors from Matsushi.ta Malaysia, I'm not very sure if they may hv experimented or introduced new models with China compressors since they hv a few big plants in China and sourced heavily from there.
National shd still be one of the best aircond brands,

Yes Panasonic have their field service team like what Sony provide. They have a standised rate and comes with warranty as well.
If you are a DIY handyman , changing of these bearings in the blower unit can be quite easy . I buy those bearings at those car spareparts shop at about rm7, yank the old one out and yank in the new one .
Sometimes the noise is not from the bearings . It may be from dirt sticking onto your blower unit and cause an imbalance fan . It is similar to what you see on the ceiling fan.

Though there are some truth to what it claims, O2 and Puritee in my opinion are more marketing gimmicks than actual benefits  . What O2 model does is, it draws outside air thru' a pipe to supply so called O2. As for Puritee, if I'm not wrong is using potential plates with postive and negative charges to attract dust and at the same time to ionise the air molecules which will attract and settle down dust on the floor :D . The disadvantage is, after sometime, the potential plates will be covered by thick dust and losing its effectiveness and obtructing the air flow, hence required servicing  . Whereas basic type is without those features thus more cheaper.
For me, I usually go for basic Panasonic as I do not believe in gimmicks and to save $ :p .
Hope this will help.

U guys must not have tested many other brands of air con.
I do a lot of testing with variuos ones.
Here's the list of top 5, starting with the BEST one first.
1. Mitsubishi Electric mr Slim <--By far the coldest, it's compressor is MADE IN JAPAN & assemble in Thailand.
2. Sharp Plasmacluster Series, it really kill germs.
3. Hitachi, also compressor made in japan.
4. National Purity
5. Carrier.
YORK, i , ACSON is the worst one besides those selling with no brand in Makro!!

My (air) "con"tribution .... :p
Using a Hitachi unit.... about 2 + years now... Its a one hp unit - but bluddy hell it has a 10,800 btu cooling power... compared to the average 9,000 btu for the average 1 hp units. Have checked the electricity range and there is no aditional spike in the current consumption... so I guess the extra cooling coils/fins help.
Oso... every once in a while, I take my water jet-spray and blast all the dust off the outside unit and  you have to see for yourself the amount of gunk and soot the external fan sucks thru the compressor unit outside! It somehow helps keep the heat exchange effecient and thus cooling the room down faster... :p
Cheers all...

Agree with Alex - we changed to Hitachi when we shifted 1.5 years ago. The units' power rating was the deciding factor. Our electricity bills are much less than our old place, can't say if it is due to the Hitachi but we certainly use more air-conditioning in our new place. It even has a silent feature. If you were to go for external features, you will find that the Hitachi is constructed much better and looks more robust than Panasonic.
heard good rating abt hitachi's air con from my friends too. i have no complain abt panasonic's air con too. as for Acson, pls avoid, it is very noisy, used them once, cheaper than jap's brand but only good for 1 - 2 years MAX.
I have a 15 yr old Sanyo 1bhp split unit installed in my bedroom in parent's home, still working after 15 yrs and very very cold without a single problem even though it is seldom used nowadays. I also had 2 Sanyo's in a previous home without ANY problems for the first 3-4 yrs until i sold the house. And still having a 8yr old GE, made in China, which has moved house 3 times with me and still functions without a glitch, though a bit louder than National but it's very very cold. These old units were expensive but they don't cut corners in manufacturing to sell at cheap-cheap prices like the new ones today. My newest a/c are 4yr old National 1 & 1.5hp units, also bought at the expensive era @ Rm1.5-2.2K but these are not as cold as the older Sanyo & GE units.
I have insider knowledge about Acson & York, that's why I never buy or used them myself, so I can't give any bad comments on a personal capacity. hahahaa :D Wonder how OYL manage to keep their stock prices so high all these years!
Have a friend who used to work in Hitachi aircond Bangi, afaik, their quality is quite good too. Can't remember if he said they get their compressors from Thailand too, or Japan.

You have to be careful using jet spray on the coils as the aluminium fins are very soft, if sprayed at the wrong angle, the extreme pressure from jet spray might push the fins shut together and u'd have impeded airflow thru the fins. Also, don't aim the spray directly at the motor or the high pressure water could wash out the bearing grease and cause accelerated wear. I'm sure you're also aware to not shoot at the electrical connections for obvious reasons.
Other than the 2 cautions, keeping the coil clean will give u maximum heat exchanger efficiency.

nsx88 mentioned "Sharp Plasmacluster Series, it really kill germs". I think whoever wants to get a new aircond should really consider this Plasmacluster thing. Our air these days is soooo contaminated, this model will do a lot of good especially for people like me who's got some sinus problem. Just to get the Plasmacluster air filter alone will costs one more than 1 k! So the air cond becomes good value for money.
I dont have problem with my National and Sanyo airconds but when it's time to change, Sharp will be my first choice. Wish they had introduced the Plasmacluster earlier! ;-(

Thanks for everybody's views here..
I went to an electrical shop... he sells Panasonic and Mitsubishi Air-con.. and he recommends me the later coz :
1) faster cooling period than Panasonic air-con
2) consume less electricity than Panasonic air-con
3) can kill germs/virus/etc with its plasmascluster than Panasonic air-con
4) it is designed for the users to do its own maintenance....
5) quieter than Panasonic
but one thing is the price is higher than Panasonic...RM1,450 (includes installation) whereas Panasonic O2 is RM1,300 (includes installation)
P/s: Anyone here can recommend a good electric water heater as well...TQ.

I am using Acson 1HP air-con in my study room. 3 hrs everyday for the past 6 years. Service the entire unit every 2 years. Still going strong.
And yes, the compressor is a bit noisy now.
IIRC, paid for 1.5K include installation that time. ;)

HI guys, my aircon just went kaput after 25yrs of faithful service. It's the old type, window I guess.
Went through the market of the usual aircon, could anyone recommend an aircon installer who doesn't charge a bomb? ;) I would probably need major installations as the walls probably need to be cemented up.
Thanks.

Last Saturday I went to a shop in Taipan at Jalan USJ 10/1A (they have just expanded to a three shoplot electrical shop near to MAXIS Centre) and bought latest model - the Mitsubishi MR Slim model without any bargaining for RM 1,150.00 INCLUSIVE of installation. There was no surcharge of any kind. The installation was done just 1 hour after I have signed my credit card. That is very fast service.
That night I was straining my ears to listen to any noise. If not for the very cold room (the coldest is 16 degree Celcius) I would be wondering whether they have installed the aircond compresser outside!! The salesman was right. It is not only fast cooling (I think it is 9600 BTU) but damn quiet.
The installer is a Pakistani contracter who personally owns his service shop located at USJ 9. And he did a good job too. What impressed me most is the lighning service. I can't vouch that he is a good contractor as I have used him once. I will try him out before I can recommend him. But I have blacklisted one contractor with a double lettered name.

Was told by a friend that Hitachi is reliable too...compressor is quite & power consumption is low (10800 BTU). If you can purchase directly from dealer, it's only RM800 plus for 1HP...eeh, think that what my friend paid for as well...

Hi, just 2 share my experience. I have a 2hp Hitachi - cooling is fast n min maintenance, one 1hp Toshiba - thumbs down from day one, noising and not cooling and lastly 2 units of 1hp Acson - one is OK another is not (i guess the QS problem??). I told myself that if i'm getting another aircon in the future, its gonna be Hitachi.

make sure the air-con has carbon filter in it. it removes odour, smell.
ioniser and all the plasma things are optional. "nice to have" kind of thing.
the compressor is key. if the freon leak, in your confined bed room, u r going to breathe in the freon while u sleep. over time, no one know the effect this has on your health, but i can tell u, it is not going to improve your health.
capacity. never install a undercapacity air-con. the unit will run throughout the nite and it may end up more expansive.
that is why i don't buy china brand air-con. pay a little more, get a good sleep. it your life.

It is a very subjective to define undercapacity or overcapacity. A same room with 1hp may be adequate with, if operated at 26 degrees and one with 1.5hp is undercapacity if operated at 20 degrees or one with 2hp at 16 degrees is still under.

Err...TQ Totoro n CCY:)...for the supportive pointer...it is important not to be misled by A/C sellers(con-sultan:D)...or the A/C con-tractors...ya gotta know some basic knowledge about thingy that ya wanna buy to install...
Ahem...it is also MORE important that ya should consider...the importance of warranty n after-sales-service issues...n proper routine maintenance(DIY or otherwise)...
What's the point of spending averagely from 1250 ringgit to even up to 6000 ringgit for A/Cs...when eventually down the road...ya find that the makers or distributors have poor after-sales-service...or poor installation workmanship by the so called con-tractors n hardly any backup of spare parts...by so called half pass six A/C service n repair experts...
In Orchi's apartment...Orchi has installed a Hitachi(1HP)...a Toshiba(1HP)...each in 2 bedrooms...n a Samsung(1.5HP used) in the living area...ahem...they have been there since 1996...n they are still kicking cold air...without any hickups...
In Orchi's home...has installed 2 New x 'I' A/C(2HP local made)...2 x 1HP Used XXX brand(don't care about brand also)...n they have been kicking cold air...since more than 2 years ago...without any hickups...
In Orchi's biz...has also installed few units ranging from 'I' A/Cs...Panasonic(s)...Samsung(s)...Hitachi(s)...etc etc ya name it...Orchi has got em all...new or used...since donkey years ago...all them Orchi's loyal customers has never gave any complaints...apart from some minor leakages of condensed water...got lar...:p
Err...so trust Orchi...nothing beats any A/Cs with a proper installation...routine maintenance(DIY) n good servicings done by right kind of A/C repairmen....not even the best makers in the wholewide world...ISO standards...?!:p

Hi Orchi :) Err.. talking about good maintenance for the a/c, can someone here pls recommend me a good and reliable a/c technician who can do a good job of servicing the a/c. I'm using an old Toshiba 1 hp - first few years, found it rather noisy but after so many years it seems to be ok now. It is now 12 yrs old! The air coming out from the blower is a bit stale now and i think it is high time to get it serviced. About 2 yrs ago, i called a shop from USJ9 to do the servicing for me, but i got overcharged then. At first they said it costs RM80 so i called them over. While doing it they mentioned that there was not enough gas in it. And they wanted to charge me something like another Rm45 just to fill up with the gas. I felt so cheated and vowed never to get them again! Btw, how much do u guys pay for servicing ur a/c units?

Err...AtomicFire:)...talking about good maintenance...
Assuming yours is split unit...periodically ya ought to check the indoor unit to see if the filter screens are choked with dirts or not...when ya cant notice the fine web...most likely they are dirty...
To take them down to be clean with water spray alone by yourself is easy stuffs...doesn't take a rocket scientist to do this kinda jobs...
Now...should the operating environment be dusty within the enclosure or around the perimeter of the outside condenser unit...the cooling coils(indoor) or the heat exchanger(outdoor radiator like)...ought to be checked to see if they are choked with dirts or not...n once ya notice that...ya ought to get the A/C servicemen to come n do a regular service(cleaning job)...
Under normal circumstances...normally an A/C needs a regular service once in between 6 months to 12 months...or so...
IF you use less...service less lor(maybe once in 2 years can lar...)...but If your usage is heavy...n within the house ya do a lot of cooking...normally ya A/C would be choked with oil fume liao...so need to service on regular basis lor...
But...should they find out that your coolant is low...then a topup is required...hence they would have to advice you with the necessary additional cost to be incurred to complete the necessary task...
If they had told you 80 bucks for a regular service...ya could have misunderstood that as inclusive of the topup of coolant...which is wrong...any topups of coolant or replacement of parts...is thus EXTRA...
Ya see these folks are normally having learnt not much lingustic skills or not so well verse in explaining themselves...that people could understand them more...or else it would be like they would have wings to fly liao...no need to do this kinda tedious jobs for this kinda money...
Sometime...we ought to put ourselves to be in their shoes...n think for a minute...Damn!...how come we don't know how to do those tedious jobs ourselves...so we could save a bit leh...
In the first place...it is their duty to check to see if the coolant is sufficient or not...or whether the thermostat is working or not...etc etc...otherwise...ya might blame them later...eh...how come ar?...the A/C is just serviced...yet it is not bluddy cold ar...?
Then again...should they find out that the coolant is low...tell ya also can not(afraid ya might say they try to rip you off:D)...don't tell also can not...so how ar...?...keep quiet lor...:D

usjfly, there are other issues to consider besides hacking of the wall:
1. Compressor's cooling power - in consideration of the distance of the piping from the back to the front of the house. If the compressor is not strong enough to drive the coolant and air along the pipes it would leave much to be desired.
2. Cost - piping from back to the front will cost you more since the installer charge for the additional metres from the default distance approx 1-3 metres. Furthermore, additional cost should you deside to reroute the compressor to the front again (see item #1).
Considering the above, most nice-to-have are not need-to-have and having said that, most need-to-have are definitely a-must-have, ie air-conditioner(s).

email me if you need Panasonic Aircond. Give me a model and i tell you my cheapest guranteed price without installation and i can also provide installation if you require. Thanks
innovasourcing@gmail.com
Just bought one Panasonic 1 HP standard type for RM800.00.
I think it is the cheapest in town without installation.
But....?
How much did u spend on the air-con?
Around 1400++. More cooling than mistubishi or national. I think model is called EX. Doesn't consume much electricity. around 800 w

Fujitsu Plastream air con very good. I did installed a set in my master bed room and a set in my baby room. it's a plasma air con, so quite and very strong air flow. most important is the outdoor unit is ABS plastic (high quality plastic) won't rusty. I should thank the dealer strongly recommended this good air con to me. :)

Has anyone installed a centralized Air-Con unit for your homes ? Can you please recommend brands, and also feedback on the usage. I plan to 'cool' my downstairs, and with already 5 units installed upstairs, I don't think we have anymore space for compressors.
Appreciate any feedback.

[QUOTE=PJS]I have a 15 yr old Sanyo 1bhp split unit installed in my bedroom in parent's home, still working after 15 yrs and very very cold without a single problem even though it is seldom used nowadays.
Good for you, 15 years that great man! My air-co which is 1hp Sharp is just 3 years old and was blowing warm air. So I called my service man, who after servicing told me the compressor isn't looking good. He tadvised me to get another air-con if the problem reoccurs as the compressor is too expensive and potong ones are not reliable. Is this true?
A friend of mine told me the the compressor is guranteed for 5yrs, I looked fot my gurantee card but could'nt find it. I must have got lost while I shifted. Can I still got back to the dealer, do they have a record of when the unit was bought?

Hi KSJ, u should go back 2 the dealer who's sell d sharp air con 2 u. they may help u up 2 solve ur problem. I had a friend exactly like ur case. he ask a contractor somewhere around his house area 2 service his air con than they tell him the outdoor compressor is high amp. they advise my friend 2 change a compressor or change a brand new set. my friend dun have a idea than call me, I told him get back 2 the dealer who sell the air con for him. cuz d air con only 4 years old n still under warranty 4 d compressor. who's know when d dealer he called back 2 check his air con, dun have a big problem, only gas leaking. d dealer told him maybe d contractor doesn't do a good job OR try 2 cheat him. until now, his air con still in good condition. this case happend about 2 years ago. so at here I advise everybody try 2 look 4 air con speciallist n as a authorised dealer 4 d air con brand what u look 4.

Hi Simon, if only for ur living n dining hall dun think 2 install d cetralized is a good idea. maybe u can try 2 look for ceiling cassette type air con. the function smiliar with centralized air con n cheaper. both model also need 2 install outdoor unit. I wan 2 suggest u a Fujitsu cassette, it's look slim n nice. most important thing is the water pump very lasting. actually I saw it at Ambank branch. I did installed a set in my office. about 5 years oredi still in good condition.

Good advise, Jason. I've learned the hard way over the years not to trust just any contractor to do the job. One of the option is to call the dealer to send their contractor to check it. If there's is any wrong doing or hanky panky u can always go back to the dealer, err... unless the dealer is also hanky panky type :p
A safe bet is to call the manufacturer's service center direct for them to dispatch a contractor to u, u'll get charged their standard home call rate even if they didn't do any repairs but u can be assured of quality n warranty if they do. But not all service centers are the same, i had good experience with 1 or 2 brands but some are also not fully competent
My advise, get your appliances from a reputable private electrical dealer. One such dealer I deal with for all my appliances is Tan Boon Ming S/B at 4th mile Old klang road near the Maybank. They are honest, straighforward, give best prices, run by family team themselves, and offer great personal service u can't get from a chain store. They also own a dedicate aircond shop with it's own service team.

How about LG Artcool series??? No one seemed to have commented on it. Besides looking good & a little more pricy, its electrostatic filter (named it Allerbuster, ionizer, plasmacluster, etc.) is very effective. According to air-con specialist shops, when Sharp's & Panasonic's electrostatic filter cease to function, then the entire air-con unit will not function, unlike LG's. Pls correct this statement if I'm wrong.
Also, electrostatic filters are consumables which requires replacement after every 2-3 yrs. It can be quite pricy to replace them at the moment. :)

Thank you for the advice and suggestions, I really appreciate it. I have been calling the manufacturer all this while but when it came to my a/c I called my regular service man (because i thought the air con just needed servicing). Anyway he did a good job flushing out all the dirt. After he had finished he said there was a bad odour, so he opened up the unit and cleaned the internal parts and then pumped gas. The last two days I put my air-con on auto and it is quite cooling. Will call SHARP if there is a problem. The big headache is I lost the gurantee card. Don't know if the manufacturer will honour the 4 year warranty for the compressor. :(

There are several problem that can result in the blower oozing out warm air.
Gas leakage, compressor cooling fan failure, compressor failure, compressor motor capacitor failure, temperature sensor/regulator failure, power relay for compressor failure, wiring to compressor broken, blocked evaporator orifice cause by moisture freeze or dirt...and a couple of others. Motor capacitor tend to fail or partially fail often enough. Motor still run at partial failure with reduce speed n may not be fast enough for any effective cooling.
Get a second opinion from another before embarking on a change. I found my national 1.5hp of 6yrs with a compressor motor capacitor failure. Get it change for 20rm diy.

normally air con compressor warranty for 5 years. i dun think is a good idea 2 call 2 sharp office direct. they won't entertaint u if u dun carry d warranty card. u should go back 2 d dealer who's sell d sharp air con 2 u. normally they do have the record of ur purchase. what i heard from my friend ( KK Aircond -air con dealer in USJ), they will record the particular of the customer. like customer name n contact, brand of the air con, model, date of purchase, serial number. even customer lost their warranty card, they still try 2 help his customer 2 solve their claim (if still under warranty period). so, pls look for the sharp dealer who sell d air con for u. they may help u. good luck.

this model is look nice for deco. hehe... what i heard from my friend do bought this model n install at kepong. he say the swing is very noisy n the service team from LG action is very slow. when he make the complain (not cool n noisy) after 3 days the LG technician only turn up. of cuz finally solve d problem take about a week time. recently i heard from him said the swing start noisy again. i did saw this unit b4, maybe d swing louver too thin, when d air blow out than noisy. i still prefer Fujitsu new model Plastream Ozone 03. i really satisfied this model. this is plasma air con, produce negative ion, do have deodorizing filter (washable filter). the filters lasting for 6-8 years than only have a chance. it's can safe our cost. i know this filter is function, cuz last week my baby vomit milk in my room,it's really smelly. the air con is on that time, after about 15-20 minutes the smell is gone. so i can sure this function is work. trust me, if u wan a good air con for ur own use, look for Fujitsu air con. i had 100% confidence on it.

Hi,
Anyone used the new YORK aircond with easy maintenance feature. From what I read, we only need to remove 2 screws to remove the fan for cleaning. I thought this is good as it will save money.
If you have used this before, please share your experience.
Thank you.
My friends, as far as the market know, there is no more Made in Japan air cond selling in Malaysia. Toshiba, Mitsubishi from Thailand; LG, Pensonic, Elba, MEC, Haier, Midea from China...
I am using National air cond since 1995 when I moved in to my 'new' house and it still perfect with only two times technician cleaning service. I have another York brand but seldom use. I think all air cond can cool down the room, but what else they can do? Healthier living, convenience to user also should be considered. And the most important thing is service.

i hv been running 2 units lg 4 3 yrs+ no problem except i maybe d swing angle 2 can b improved upon. important thing is 2 keep d unit clean. if d blower is clogged with dust it can b a bearable wee bit noisy. clean it n d noise disappears - n d air feels fresher too. touch wood, no servicing needed so far.
as 4 puritee, i too feel its a gimmick not worth acquiring. heard that its expensive maintenance too. i use a separate portable air purifier/ionizer. advantage is it can b used anywhere in d hse n anytime independently of d aircond. n if either gadget gives trouble, i still hv d other.

I bought my Panasonic Air-Cond with ION function, 1.5 HP - (1 unit), 1.0HP (2 unit) March 2003 .
within a year, 1.5HP have this problem, you switch it on, it run for 1 minutes and automatically switch off, i switch it on every night for 10 hours.
today, i have a same problem with the 1.0HP, seldom use but recently due to hot weather in afternoon, i prefer to let kids sleep at living hall with mattress....., i wonder why this happen to their pcb board as previously.... national and panasonic used to be the best of all mitsubishi, york and etc.

I went to survey some electrical shops around Subang and Puchong area the past weeks.

Panasonic will "rosak" easily. Mitsubishi is good but as time goes, it'll be noisy like York.

I heard from one shop that York has been bought over by Daikin. Dunno if this is true or not.
I've also been looking around for new aircond. Right now I'm thinking of getting the Toshiba Daiseikai, it has plasma purifier, ionizer, inverter (30% reduction in electricity), and the toshiba's filter can last 5 years, whereas Panasonic's puritee only lasts 3 years. Plus toshiba claims that its plasma purifier can filter upto 0.0001 micron (SARS virus is 0.06 microns).
Seems like toshiba has teamed up with Carrier for the Daiseikai model. But I find it weird that toshiba's website doesn't show this model, instead, i have to go to carrier's website and other sites to get the details:
http://www.carrierindia.com/toshiba/daiseikai.htm
http://www.all-seasons.co.nz/hiwall.html
http://www.aar.co.nz/brands/toshiba.html
The features are impressive, but I've never used Toshiba airconds before. Are they reliable in the long run? Anyone like to share their toshiba experience?

Hi,
I haven't seen any of the local USJ electrical shop stocking Toshiba branded aircons... mostly Panasonic, LG, Sharp or Hitachi. May I know where did you find shops in USJ that sells the Toshiba aircons?
I'm have been contemplating getting either Hitachi or Mitsubishi, but both of them don't have features (ie. plasma cleaner, etc) mentioned in Toshiba's Daiseikai. Dunno whether it's just marketing gimmick or whether maybe better to get a separate purifier or have it in-built with the aircon? Still researching...

While on the subject of air con, i saw a portable air con (no, its not a water cooler with fan ). its manufactures by MEC. I saw it at Jusco, selling abt RM 1499.00 (if my memory serves me right) - I can move it room to room, as back-up too. dont need starter, no need for external compressor etc.
Has anyone purchased one, if you have , please share you opinion. thanks .

Same here, most shop I've been too doesn't seem to stock them. I only know about the Toshiba Daiseikai because I asked the shop owner which aircond is the best, and he recommended the Toshiba. He showed me Toshiba's aircond brochure/booklet and showed all the features shown in those websites.

Yup! "fresh" smell like after rain. Ionizer help in relexing & the plasma filter can help in "sinus" but according to Dr in specialist air filter or air con help only the 8 - 12hrs while we sleeping. Once out from the room at the normal enviorment, all gone.....

Another thing to note when buying airconds, especially those with plasma purifier/deodorizer, is how often do you have to clean and replace those special filters. Here's what I found:
Panasonic Puritee - wash every 6 months, replace every 3 years
Hitachi Nano Titanium - wash every 3-6 months, replace every 3 years
Toshiba Daiseikai - wash every 6 months, replace every 6 years
These figures are based on the official recommended maintenance schedule. If you seldom use your airconds, you could probably stretch the duration a bit.

Fren, rule of thumb - avoid buying electrical products where the principals or the manufacturers do not have their service centres here in KL. The reason being if you are not happy with the service of their agents or distributors, the principal who has to jaga their names usually undertake to make good for you. I have problems with my York airconditioner and their service providers weren't professional enough to handle the warranty claim. I complained directly to the Hong Leong Group providing the chronology of their services and my comments and the next next, two technical guys from HL came to my house and was gentleman enough to honour the warranty with no questions asked. I never heard of Fujitsu in the aircond business so I dare not go near them. Get those popular ones which can be a little expensive but at least they are around to look after your interest. My good friend is a very strong supporter of the Toshiba notebook until one very bad experience with its distributor Teledynamics was sure enough for him to badmouth it to 10 of his friends (and I have not stop counting) but that is out of the topic here.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this page and Denver has been very kind to refer me to this thread. Thanks Denver. Been reading all the 7 pages of your exchanged views on aircon and learn quite a bit here and there.
I'm shopping for aircon, need 5 unit and i was told Fuji Electric aircon value buy - parts from Japan but assembly in Thailand, quiet, very cooling and offering at RM859 for 1Hp. Most of electrical shop and aircon shop sales person do not recommend to buy Panasonic as all parts from china and more expensive. Same goes to LG, only look nice but not reliable and service is lousy.
Has anyone comes across this and any feedbacks of this new brand of aircon?

I had one electrical shop that recommended me Fuji airconds, but since I've never heard of Fuji airconds before, I was kinda sceptical about it (long term performance, maintenance, after sales service etc). I decided to go with Toshiba Daiseikai and Hitachi instead.

You guys heard of Fujitsu air con. Is it just new in market or already very long history. This may sound funny because it is my first time. I thought Fujitsu only makes laptop and computers ?

I have two 1.5hp Fuji Electric a/conds and its made in Japan by the the Fuji Electric Co . The outdoor unit looks a striking resemblance to Fujitsu in shape as well as material ie plastic casing - I think they may be of the same. There are made in China ones as well like FujiTech , FujiAire etc. but I believe these are dudes. The indoor unit is ,however, different from Fujitsu. In terms of performance, 1 unit is switched on almost 18hrs a day (hall) and another about 10hrs a day (room). In terms of performance - cold enough and durable. Only the hall unit required gas top up (due to ice forming) once. Other than that , a quarterly periodic cleaning of the indoor unit is sufficient. Refinement - poor. Each time the compressor kicks in, there is a noticeable relay click followed by 'hissing' sound which can be annoying if in the bedroom. Panasonic is by far the best in terms of this refinement as the kick in is not perceptible. York is OK too but ranks just below Panasonic in term of this factor. All split unit a/cond suffers a drop in cooling efficiency quite rapidly due to clogging of dust on the evaperator (the fins) and more distinctively the blower fan. When the blower gets weigh down by dust, its blowing capacity drops dramatically and this will be one of the main reason cooling is not efficient. That's why most manufaturers have designed the indoor unit with easy access to the blower for cleaning - YORK and of more recent Mitsubishi. My Fuji Electric and Panasonic unfortunately does not have this easy access. For those who are DIY savvy, maybe you can follow the method I have used to service split unit a/conds and quite effectively too not to mention bring $$ savings:
1. Get lots of old rags and place on floor beneath the indoor unit. There will be quite a lot of water.
2.Remove the front panel / casing of the indoor unit. This will expose the
front fins. This will involve removing screws, be careful not break any plastic tabs.
3.Fill up a hand spray bottle with water that gives a strong direct jet of water(if available spray the fins with some a/cond cleaning diluted solution) . Spray evenly along the fins. The more water sprayed the better. Not much water will 'leak' from the unit at this jucture as the water sprayed will flow out through the a/cond water channel. Be careful not to spray at the electrical components which is usually on the right side. No problem at the other end.
4.Now comes the hard part, the blower fan. Point the spray through the air output louvres and spray at blower. The blower may start rotating by the pressure of the spray ,if so you continue to squirt. If the blower does not move, use finger to and push the blower to cause it to rotate. The purpose is to ensure that the entire circle of the blower gets cleaned. Then repeat for the entire length of the blower fan. At this juncture a lot of water will drip and contain quite a lot of clogged dirt.
4.Off course clean the usual filter element of the indoor unit
5.If the outdoor unit is within safe reach clean by pointing the jet of the garden hose from the direction of the fan blades. The outdoor units have the evaporators at one of its side and continued to behind the fan so by shooting water from inside out will dislodge dirt that has accumulated. Do not spray from behind the unit or side.
6.No drying is required after wash of either the indoor or outdoor so the unit can be operated immediately. Switch at full blast to enable quicker drying for about 20 - 30 minutes.
Some of the a/cond service use the above method rather than removing the entire Indoor unit because its much more simple but off course not as effective if the unit is removed which may become necessary when the unit is too clogged.

Does anyone has any experience using Midea air-cond? I saw several shops carrying this brand in Taipan and one of the shops recommended this brand saying that Midea is 2nd China's largest selling air-cond as well as OEM for Toshiba. The price was quite cheap at RM880/unit including installation & it has ionizers as well. This brand was carried by a company under DRM-HICOM.

I am using LG Neo air con for about half year time. I love it because is power saving. (not sure is it because the way we use it)
We switch on about 10pm -2:30am at 25c , our bill for whole household is RM30+ only.
We switch on about 10pm-7am at 24c (due to my late pregnancy) , our bill for whole household is around RM50 only.
Personally , i think is quite cheap because our budget for our bill after using it should be 100.. but surprise us, it doesn't cost us much.

went shopping for a 2 HP Hitachi air-con. This sales person in Kota Damansara quote us RM 1,800 for a basic model RAS 18C9G. Check Hitachi web site, the Retail Selling Price is RM1919. The discount is about 6% from the publish retail price. Guys, need your input. Is the price reasonable? Any recommendation on good aircon dealer.

Was told Daikin is about the best these days. With their inverter model, cost of electricity is also greatly reduced. But outlay is much higher than the other models. Also heard that it's manufactured in Japan. Not sure if true.

My suggestion is...always look at or ask for BTU, instead of just looking at the HP. Must of the time, its averaged on HP. I HP could have somewhere from 8000 to 12XXX BTU....go with higher BTU....

Daikin manufactured by OYL at their Sungai Buloh factory.
Additional info! now OYL are owned by Daikin (fully or partially I am not so sure, but controlling share for sure). Previously OYL are OEM for Daikin.

If your HP is too low for the room size your electricity bill will be equivalent as high. Check what is the recommended HP for your room size before you decide to go for either 2HP or 2.5HP.

Note:
1. The Panasonic has a lower cooling capacity of 2.8kW while Hitachi has a higher cooling capacity of 2.96kW which also means the power consumption of Hitachi (4.1x0.88)KW is higher than that of Panasonic (3.5x0.78)KW.
2. Both Panasonic and Hitachi advertised for RM1,199 (shop in Puchong)f
So my question is between these two models, which would you chose, and why?
Asked one of the shop for Panasonic and got quoted for RM1210 (after few rounds price reduction)
Asked another shop but got recommendation for Hitachi and got quoted for RM1130 (shop boss gives better discount)
(a) or (b)?

I think we missed the most important aspect of using an air-con unit.....not withstanding the various new eco/energy saving features. It is HOW TO USE an aircon EFFECTIVELY....!
For me, the first thing I do with a new aircon is to read its manual, especially on how to do a reset to factory/default mode. Then I check out all its settings....
I use Panasonic - different models. But it has three main modes. I set them to auto for the fan and swing and let it be. Don't be ichy fingers and start adjusting every few minutes or in the middle of the night.
Too cold? - just switch it off and use the fan (lowest speed will do). Too hot/uncomfortable? - change to a different auto mode and let it run for some time - 5 to 10mins - to gauge its effectiveness. Aircon takes some time to acclimatise - so have patience!
The dry mode for hot afternoons is very effective, in my experience. Also, in the evening, when your room is very hot - set it to dry mode for about an hour or so. It takes out the humidity. The auto mode (not the cool auto mode setting) for night use is just fine. Towards dawn just switch it off and switch on the fan (slowest speed).
Of course, aircon needs to be cleaned...!!! That's another story...!!
Just sharing my experiences...
Cheers!

Oh ya, forgot one main difference between Panasonic and Hitachi.
Hitachi model use stainless steel in the Nano Titanium Filter hence more durable and cleaner. Also the "UV Fresh" treats the air flowing thru the filter. Normal pre-filter is plastic, needs replacement more frequently, and maintenance due to dust congestion and blockage.

Hitachi seems to be a good buy, partly do to lower capital outlay. But, I still want to know what's the difference in terms of energy saving features. Fonzie :), Being a 1st time purchaser myself, any idea how the ECONAVI dual sensor work? It'll be useful to know how it actually works in order to maximise on the features so as to use it effectively. D brochure written well and dandy, but it does not explain how it works, neither does it mention where the sensors are located in order to understand how it's supposed to work.

Sorry ivanhow.....I should have stated I have older models of Panasonics......
Therefore, I don't know about the newer eco-save technologies and its workings...
Wonder why an aircon room can't be ventilated the old way?......just opened all the windows during a windy day..!!!

Opening the windows... That's what we are doing now, & wish I can continue doing it this way!
But the truth is that, all the dusts collects, and collects really fast. Am going to install a/con mainly to prevent too much dust brought in by the transportation agent which is the wind. When dey blow, they snoop past those cracks and gaps and soon a thick layer of dusts settles everywhere. That's why those air filters are important...
