I am amazed at the the organic growth of the <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/">Photo Gallery</a>.

Soon, fRaNkY will be delighted to see the collection break the first 1,000 mark of archived images.

Moderator Dreamer has been the live-wire in organising photoshoot outings - I have tagged along on two trips so far. Very satisfying because ( 1 ) I get to learn from fellow photobugs and ( 2 ) we enjoy each other's company.

It's one of the best activities to promote Malaysia. All photobugs here cut beyond the cultural divides. Just like Band of Brothers, believe me.

Perhaps one day, and make it soon, we should organise an outing for point-and-shoot (P-n-S) camera owners. You will be amazed to see sometimes P-n-S cameras take better pictures than the dSLR.

Proof, just take a look at these photos I took at the Scorpion concert - with a RM400 3.2 megapixel, no-optical zoom lens Ben-Q camera which my 8-year-old daughter uses!

<img src="http://www.jeffooi.com/archives/Scorpion6_web.jpg" border="1">

Details in this URL:

A friend says it's the eye behind the viewfinder that matters. Not always the camera. (In my case, I think I just happen to snap at the right time ;-)

So, anyone care to organise a treasure-hunt-like P-n-S photoshoot around, say... Taman Subang Ria?

Perhaps... I could get <a href="http://www.mycen.com.my/picturestory/index.html">TV Smith</a> to conduct a workshop on basic skills on digital photography.

Is there anyone to lend ( 1 ) a room for 2o people ( 2 ) an LCD projector for half-a-day?

We will focus on tips like
( 1 ) Composition - very basic but very important
( 2 ) Aperture - Tapping natural light
( 3 ) Shutter-speed - so that your hand won't shake at the wrong time
( 4 ) Depth of Field - OK, it's about getting blurry images that still look nice;-)
( 5 ) Perspectives - big word for "best angle that tells the best story"

I am sure, we can get USJ-ian YS Loh (a.k.a. "Yeng Seong Loh" - cameraman in Cantonese) to share with us how he managed to capture this on the digital camera:

<img src="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/albums/album34/C.jpg" border="1">

More gems in this URL:

http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/album34

Perhaps we could have free-print coupons or SD cards as incentives for best photos after our outing...

Give me your response... because I have bigger plans to grow this Digital gallery - one of which is to chronicle developments - good and bad ones - around Subang Jaya, USJ and Putera Heights.

But there's far bigger plans than this!

(Kasi suspense dulu..., so I stop here.)

But come out and start shooting...

Jeff, if you quite firm on the digital photography session, I could try to talk to my friend to use his training room in USJ 21. Let me know.

Yes, Patrick, I very much want to make it happen.

With the venue found, we next just need to get an LCD projector on loan. I can work with TV Smith on the "syllabus" and notebook.

I will advise on the firm date, which will be a Saturday afternoon, most probably the first or the third Saturday of the month.

Meanwhile, those interested, please sign in your name - perhaps for a start we will limit it to 20 people, first-come-first-served basis:

Yes, during the <a href="http://www.mycen.com.my/picturestory/index.html">TV Smith Workshop</a>, we will also take the opportunity to introduce to you guys the community behind the <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/">USJ Gallery</a>.

They are:

1. Bok a.k.a. <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/album39">Dreamer</a> (Moderator, USJ 6)
2. <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/album36">fRaNkY</a> (Moderator, USJ14)
3. <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/PulauLangkawi">YS Loh</a> (USJ 4)
4. <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/SIC-Motocross%3A-Sepang">Nazree</a> (Shah Alam/Damansara)
5. Majdi a.k.a. red (USJ11)
6. <a href="http://www.usj.com.my/gallery/Lake-Garden">Tey</a> (USJ6)

These are the people who will bring us for outdoor shooting.

In the workshop, don't forget to include also the 'darkroom' activities as most of the tricks of the trade happens here. Shooting can be pretty easy now (of course you must be creative too) that the camera is doing all the guessing work for you but how we want to present the finished art is a LLL - Long Life Learning. My friend who is a famous long time professional photographer (quite a number of billboard ads are shot by him) admitted that he is still learning.

jeffooi
13-04-2005, 10:21 AM
Let us plan the syllabus in an organised manner.

We need to get the basics right before getting into the "darkroom" techniques.

Frankly, indoor learning must be supplemented with outdoor shooting, the practical (hands-on) part.

That can't be learnt in a 2-hour session. The normal Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced stages still apply. It's sequential for beginners, and modular for those with the basic basics.

What Nazree, Dreamer and YS Loh have are an outcome of at least RM15,000 investment in equipments, and 20,000 hours of field work hours - each. :D

So, we each have to first get a footing.

Yes, TV Smith and Clip magazine guys are friends. One day, we will link our community with Clip sincethey are an authority in digital photograhy.

Those resourceful may start calling some contacts to get little trinkets like free digital print coupons and SD cards as incentives for the treasure-hunt photo-shoot using P-n-S cameras around Subang Jaya - which we will hold after the first workshop.

We will publish the 'sponsors' in this website.

I would love to join you guys as taking photos is one of my favourite hobbies - however I can't as I am not in the country. Anyway, I have a suggestion, perhaps we could post our 'homework' online, and the rest of the photo group can judge the photos and give us constructive criticism (eg this photo is slightly overexposed, this photo makes good use of angles and light however would improve with better colour saturation, the photographse could try to increase aperture to reduce depth of field, etc etc etc). Everyone who views the photos can have their say. In this way we can experiment a bit with our cameras, pick a few photos, put them online somewhere and see where we can improve, and how people respond to the photos we take,,,

Just a suggestion.

You learn to SEE by practice. It's just like playing tennis, you get better the more you play. The more you look around at things, the more you SEE. The more you photograph, the more you realise what can be photographed and what can't be photographed. You just have to keep doing it. — Eliot Porter

<font size="+1">Tsunami Through Our Lens</font>
April 21 - 24, 2005
East Court Atrium, Mid Valley, KL

The Malaysian Chinese Photojournalist Association (MCPA) will host a <a href="http://asianphotogs.org/site/forum_viewtopic.php?16.591">tsunami photo exhibition</a> at Mid Valley from April 21 to 24.

It's titled: "<a href="http://asianphotogs.org/site/forum_viewtopic.php?16.591">Tsunami Through Our Lens</a>".

The collection of over 100 tsunami photographs - chosen from over 400 entries - are contributed by 27 Chinese-Malaysian photographers from 9 media organisations who covered the December 26 tsunami catastrophe, from Sri Lanka to Sumtra (Banda Aceh), and Thailand (Phuket and Krabi). Some have never been published.

"The photos are not something you would like to hang on your walls. They are the grim wake-up calls from the forces of Nature," says Vincent Thian, the MCPA pro-tem chairman, who is Associated Press's KL-based picture editor.

"As photogs, our duty is to bring back the images. We have to overcome all the discomfort and risks while at work," he says.

"We witnessed the pain of those who survived to endure their irreversible losses, and we really have to convey their tormenting experiences through our lenses, just to tell the world," adds Thian.

"Through the exhibition, we hope to remind people that their fund-raising, the time and efforts that they have sacrificed are a noble cause that goes to help the victims rebuild their homeland."

Thian covered Sri Lanka and witnessed the aftermath of tsunami at close range.

The photogs (short for photo-journalists) comprises professionals from Associated Press, AFP, The Star, The NST, Oriental Daily News, Sin Chew Daily, Nanyang Siang Pau, China Press, Guang Ming Daily and Kwong Wah Jit Poh.

There will also be two special photo slide shows (in Mandarin & English) on April 23 at the Cititel. Seats are limited, please email <a href="mailto:sslai17@yahoo.com">sslai17@yahoo.com</a> before April 19 - One person per seat and first-come-first-served. You are required to leave your full name, choice of language and your contact number.

The Mandarin session is from 2pm - 3.30pm while English session is from 4pm - 5.30pm.

The event will be launched at 11am, Apr 21, by Minister Ong Ka Ting, who is also the patron of MCPA.

The exhibition is open from 10am to 9pm daily at East Court Atrium, Mega Mall (near Coffee Bean). The event is sponsored by Canon Malaysia.

Also visit <a href="http://asianphotogs.org/">asianphotogs.org</a>, of which Thian is the founder and administrator.

Inspiring words that move us to pick up a camera and shoot.

When I was around 20 years old I began to take pictures. It changed my world. The sky was no longer just blue or red, rather an infinite spectrum of colours. Things which I had never noticed began to obtain form and life. Travelling, even just the short distance to school, became an experience. Sparrows which sat flocked together on telephone lines were like notes on paper, forming a song which I saw and wished to give others the opportunity to hear and see - a picture. — Páll Stefánsson

The birds and the six of us who went to the Bird Park yesterday were defeated by the rain - we ran to cover our precious gears and the feathered species had their dressed soaked.

Nicholas Chan (Kelang) had to leave by noon, while fRaNkY had to arrive with (free) lunch (for us at the tiny hut - terima kasih daun keladi).

Dreamer, YS Loh, Nazree, fRaNkY and I then moved on to Tugu Pahlawan after the rain.

Dreamer was the first to post his lens works:

Goh, I had uploaded 3mbyte files before so there is no problem if you have broadband or streamyx,

However, I recommended files with the size of 200k for faster uploading and a 800X??? for a better quality pictures.

A good old friend of mine who is an Ambassador for Apple named Jen Siow gave a talk at a FREE seminar sponsored by Apple at Hotel Equatorial last Saturday. It was well attended by some 200 people. Jen has more than 20 yrs experience in professional photography and during the last few years, he spent most of his time on digital photography and providing consultancy. Recently, he contributed a series of 5 articles for Computimes on the subject matter.

This morning I was on the phone with him to invite him to give a talk to our community. Instead, he shared this information with me. He said that there is another half day FREE seminar coming up on 25th June and he suggested that we register en bloc but venue has not yet been decided. There are limited places. I suggested that he convince Apple to have it here at Subang Jaya so that all our kaki can attend. This talk is opened to all who want to know all about digital photography as it is quite basic. No need to own a camera but like music, it would be be good if you have one. For this coming seminar, it will be conducted differently, if the sponsor agrees. He proposes to conduct the advanced module during the second half of the seminar which he will charge a nominal fees. I think it is a fantastic idea as it will kill two birds with one shot. Those who attended the first half could just stay back to sharpen their skill. By the way, there will also be a roadshow by those Apple and digital camera/printer dealers peddling their hardware/softwares.

Watch out for further development. Meantime click here to experience to enjoy this craft and visual expression. He is good. Trust me.
