I am planning to go to Pulau Redang next school holiday and by self-driving.
Unfortunately, I could only found these info below from the Web on how to get there:

/************************************************** *******************************/
KL to K. Trg (approx. 455 km): 2 option the coastal road or Jerangau Jabor :

Highway 2 KL (Gombak Toll) on Karak Highway and continue with ECE (East Coast Expressway) to Kuantan exit.
Highway 3 Kuantan exit to Kuala Terengganu (Coastal road to Kemaman, Dungun and Kuala Terengganu)(223km)
Highway 2 KL (Gombak Toll) on Karak Highway and continue with ECE (East Coast Expressway) to Kuantan exit.
Highway 3 Kuantan exit to Bukit Besi (20+km) - turn left
Highway 14 Bukit Besi turn off to Dungun/Ajil (114km) - turn left
Highway 14 Dungun/Ajil to Ajil/Kuala Berang (42km) - turn right
Highway 14 Ajil to Kuala Terengganu (35km)

/************************************************** *******************************/

My questions:
1. How long it takes from USJ to Kuala Terengganu? (and I knew that the distance from KT to Merang Jetty is about 42KM)
2. Which is Jerangau Jabor road? Is it the inner road(highway starts in Kuantan) shown in this map http://www.redangisland.com/map.htm?
3. The first 2 instructions above is for coastal road and last 5 for taking Jerangau Jabor road. Is my assumption correct?
4. How is the parking security in Merang Jetty?

hi jonaChong - take my advise. Don't drive - the journey is too long and will probably spoilt your mood. Afterall, you are not familiar with the driving & the places at East Coast

You are going for a holiday. Search for Air Asia or MAS !!! :D

With my moderate style of driving, from Subang Jaya to Karak Toll is aprrox 1 hr 30 mins, Karak to Kuantan 1 hr 30 mins, Kuantan Toll to Kuala Terengganu 3 hrs30 mins, Kuala Terengganu to Merang 45 minutes (that if you are pretty sure on the route you are taking)

Going is not a problem, but the coming back driving is a problem !!

The choice is yours - enjoy your holiday !!!! :) :p :) :p

There's a hotel next to Merang's take-off point to the island. You have to pay them RM5 per day for safe keeping of your car.

jonaChong - via coastal road. My family enjoy the view of the sea front, instead of the 'semi jungle' road (Jabor Jerangau).
If you decide to drive, please be carefull of speed trap (speed limit below 80km/h at most of the stretches after the Kuantan toll exit.
Also be carefull of the cows, goats & bufallos along the way.
And also, be careful of some 'bufallos' in human clothing who will drive about 30 km/h along the main road. You will have difficulties overtaking them, as the road has many 'double line' streches, and the 'bufallo' is leading as least 5 - 6 cars or lorries along the way.

Take care !! :)

Well...just back from Laguna Redang 2 wks ago for a 3d2n stay . Coudn't get enough of it ....paradise I suppose.
Ok to your question now . I self drive as well .
1. I made it back from KT using Ajil/Jerangau road in abt 5.5 hrs including stops in ECE . That was a good 1 hr less than when I took the coastal road Kemaman/Dungun which comes to 6.5 hrs. Of course it is up to individual how fast is the driving .I did a good part of the Kt/Ajil stretch at 90kmh because of talk of speed trap very often been carried out .Coastal road has it's advantage in the sense that you can break your journey if not in a hurry in beach resort in Cherating or Kijal Awana Resort . I took a nap in Awana beach .
The inland Ajil/Jerangau road is much shorter and less traffic . Good road condition and well place directional signs as well . That was my first time on the Ajil/Jerangau road then

2. Yes I think you are right here except that there is no road sign showing a short cut after the ECE toll . The normal signs directs you through heading to Kuantan/cherating route , then left turn to Jabor/Bk Besi/Jerangau/Ajil .
The short cut saves you some 20+ km of heavy traffic road and is running parallel to the ECE extension to KT in future . It is the shortest way .It even bypasses Jabor .
Let me give you a rough guide . On exiting ECE toll , on the first T junction ,turn left following signs to Cherating . Then about 50-100meters away , take a left turn with sign showing Bukit Sagu , then after another some distance e...err ..quite short .. look out for another left turn to Bukit Goh or something . After this hopefully follow the signs and 10-30km of trunk road through oil palm estate will lead you to a T junction that shows you the direction to Jerangau/Ajil/K.T .

3. Parking is rm5 a day uncovered or rm10 a day covered. Security is good I suppose with all those fencing .

Happy holiday then...
