200 study loan defaulters to be hauled up

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 19:
Two hundred National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan defaulters will be hauled to court soon for failing to settle loans amounting to millions of ringgit.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Shafie Salleh said charges would be filed against the first batch of students who studied with Government aid in the last five years.

"We have no choice but to haul them to court as they have ignored all four warning letters, including the last one sent by the lawyers," he said after chairing the ministry's post-Cabinet meeting today.

"We will publish their names in the newspapers and display them on the PTPTN website," he said.

Shafie, who refused to disclose when these students would be charged, said it would start with the pioneer batch who obtained their loans in 1996.

Err...Orchi wonders how many students were deprived of obtaining the necessary study loans to further their dreams...while so many of those who managed to get it...defaulted in repayments!

Agreed...the serious ones are always denied, while the 'playful' ones are shoved a loan down their throat...only to conveniently default paying the meagre RM100 plus per month.

Opinion: If they can't afford to repay RM100+ per month because of unemployment or low salary, I would doubt how they were considered eligible for the loan in the first place. If one really is good enough academically to get a loan, one should be ahead of others in securing a good job, no?

Question... if most of your friends can get away without service the loan, do you still want to service the loan yourself? No way Jose.

Two hundreds out of thousand defaulters, if not hundred of thousands, is just like you hit the jakepot in lottery when they served you the summon. So why bother, keep the money for something else, they will never catch me mentality.

This is not news anymore, everytime, when there is someone new at the helm, the same issue alway bring out. Main wayang sahaja, I don't think they are serious, something stink here.

My suggestion, to save the administration cost and with no hope of getting the loan back, write it off before the next election. This will ensure more support of the BN and anywhere, all these were created by them under NEP. Who is surprise now

Hello wildbill, I see your point. However, it is more a matter of personal integrity. If a person has integrity, he will stand up and do what is right even though everyone else is wrong. Oftentimes people like to hide behind a veil (in this case, the many other people who defaulted) so that they can get away doing something naughty. Something is terribly wrong, either with the education system or our society has no fear anymore for the authorities.

When come to money and you have to decide whether to buy a nice thing for yourself or repay the loan, Ithink the decision is very clear and knowing nobody will catch you up.

My question is, if a student is eligible (capable) of further his/her study, the authority should just give them scholarship instead of loan. The whole thing is stink b'cos of certain faults in NEP. Period.

The decision is only clear to people without a conscience or carefully thought of the consequences e.g. loss of face if name is published, if the authorities decide to crack its whip. To put it simpler...only thick-faced people would default. Come on...a loan is a loan and it has to be repaid. Just becoz PTPTN don't come calling doesn't mean one has to use up the grace given. One can come up with thousands of reasons, but a default is a default.

Err...wildBill :) has a valid point to rest to ponder...200 defaulters out of hundreds or even thousands more...why not just blacklist their forking creditability...once in place(immediately justifiable already)...they couldn't even take another loan for a bycycle...or apply for a credit card...or any freaking credit applications...until they bluddy payup their NPLs...Debts!

Is the government treating them by anyway...1st class privilleges or rights...why waste then all the constant n continuous resources to trackdown or warn these freaking defaulters in the first place...n have the rest be deprived of the same?...ahem...having asked that...there shall never be any answers for this...too sensitive liao...even to have raised it in the first freaking place...!

Agree or not?...then just hisap n swallow it down our throats!... :D

Maybe I can put it this way: When one gains entry into a university by merit rather than priviledge, one tends to work harder to excel. When one gains a loan by merit rather than priviledge, one tends to be thankful for the funding and would not hesitate to repay upon working. :D

All of us are fools to debate on this 'Age-old' problem.

Didn't the Education Ministry, JPA, UITM, MARA etc etc assured Tax-payers like us that their next plan to recover the loans is to request Income Tax Dept to deduct the borrowers salary. This way, the defaulter cannot adscond their responbility. What has happen to this plan !!!

The above is only recovery problem of Study loan. What about Business, Entrepeuners, Agriculture and Fisheries loans ?

Why can't the borrower be a more responsible & trustworthy citizen ?
Servicing the loan by paying RM 100 a month is not an 'impossible' task.

If you borrow and don't pay, you are 'CHEATING' & 'DEPRIVING' other students. What the heck !!!

As the says go :- If there's a means, there's always a way'.
Otherwise, it's just a play / wayang.

What goes around comes around. Now these defaulters will face the long arm of the law and they won't be getting away scot free as they thought.

These type of people I have no sympathy. If the government can be so gracious to save your bacon when you need them but when your government need you, you just laugh in their face.

For these cheats, they will not prosper in anything in their life. They are also morally corrupt and are wont to walk the crooked path their whole life. Their life will be bitter and victory is far away from them.

Finally, let me quote "There is no rest for the wicked."

Basically they're not God-fearing and love to play hide-and-seek. One can run from the authorities...but not from the eyes of the One up there :D

Ah Wildbill,

But money can't buy you peace of mind. Have you not see that rich man like the remisier have to own a gun to fight off thugs? The more wealthy you are, the more worrier you will be. :)

Those politician are getting tons of money from crooked deals but how happy are they as a person? They are constantly looking behind their back to see if a knife have somehow lodged between their shoulder blade. Worry about thugs kinapping and ransom their children for money. And in some case even they are fair target too. Just look at the rich man in Indonesia and the Phillipine living behind fortress like castle just to but some peace of mind. :o

I would prefer to be the average joe that don't stand out like a sore thumb in society. At least whatever mistake we did would not be broadcasted a 100 times unlike some MB that we know.

To end, i would like to quote, "Berat mata memandang, berat lagi bahu yang memikul."

The ball is in their court. :)

Bro, you got the point, this karma diggy will catch them up one day. Hopefully, they will be the receiving end and not somebody else.

If the gormen is serious in nabbing them we dont need to wait for karma to catch up with these scum of society.
If a bank needed to go after you for a loan you had taken, pls tell me how helpless do you think the bank will be ?
If there is a will there is a way.
Take the scum to the cleaners .... the banks will do it. But the banks dont have to worry about the scumm being a Deputy Minister's child or a Datuk's son ...... But our gormen have to mah ??

When i browse thru all the comments here........i just find it so amusing...........all of u come out with some wild ideas but have u done some research n find out the real cause??

It happens that i knew quite a number of these ppl but r they what the government portray them to be???
Luckily i m not one of these fellow else i deeply regret taking a loan from the so called Caring Government........do i smell something here......is the government just so broke until they have to resort to such action??

Let me explain the whole scenario on behalf of these party........
i have a fren just got a job but after quite sometime still wondering why no letter asking him/her to repay the loan..........then approach the university and they told him/her to check with the ministry........went to the ministry and they said maklumat belum lengkap.........datang balik 3 bulan lagi.........ehem........went there after 3 months and the ministry show him/her the amount to be repay........ ........RM60,000.00 for 3 years study........but he/she only took two years loan due to when first year enter U........have to pay first and then apply for loan......which basically only get when enter 2nd year study..................to his/her shock the ministry told my fren to seek the info from the University since all 3 years loan being given to the university for disbursement.............

are we getting somewhere here.........or still cannot find reason why being slapped with such high debts.............and to make matter worse.......did not even get the repayment letter from the ministry as proclaimed by them............worst still all the money is given semester by semester thus the bulk of interest actually go into the university YAB's bank account.............

To resort to such drastic measure which cud jeopardise the graduate image and name is really uncall for since in such bad-economy .......not many found job easily......if u do not believe try to get a job in Selangor (during 1998 until 2003) and u will find that the position has 6000 applicants............sometimes not that u have a good degree then u get high paying job.........for example myself...............ehem........i got a more decent pay than most of my uni frens who have much better result than me.........hihi :D ........and sometimes to get a job.........luck and ur living location are the factors that determines whether u r the one lucky fellow................and ur perseverance and work ethics............sometimes qualification is just a piece of useless paper and only come in handy when u appy for a job........to have good grades or not although important but do not determine whether u succeed in staying long in that particular company...........period. :D

gnehkgnep
20-01-2005, 06:51 PM
And this case to me is almost similar to the speeding summons pay up else go to jail.........the ministry just do not take the right steps and penalize the victims for their own short-coming.........another episode thanks to the Gormen.......back to u all....... :D

Case # 01
Police to recover RM 300 million from Motorists
--------------------------------------------------------------
You commited a traffic offence last year.
Police knock at your door bringing along photographers
Then he hauled you to Balai Polis
If no bailor, you sleep in lockup
Next day, you appear in Court
The amount you owe - a mere RM 300
Syabas, the Police is very efficient

Case # 02
National Higher Education Fund to recover RM 7 Billion in unpaid loan
----------------------------------------------------------------
Your friend defaulted his loan of RM 85,000 (IPTS) since 1997
Presently, he's happily driving around town with his new Waja
He's now sleeping soundly as no one is coming a knocking at his door. Even though the Court pass sentence, he'll start paying only RM 50-00 a month.
Why does he bother to pay up when the Govt / authority is sleeping on the issue for far too long ?

Where is justice when you compare the gravity of offence of Case 1 & 2 !!!
Due to lack of enforcement, who is the guardian of tax-payer's monies? Mind you, the unpaid Study loan of RM 7 Bil is more than 10% of our National Budget.

Yup, #2 case scenario bigger money involve but if that the case.......why are we seeing more and more loan being given out.............or did they add-in a clause to their loan agreement???.......whereby they secretly install a GPS satellite tracking system into ur MyKad....................hahaha :D ...........some may argue that summons are small money and study loans are big money...........but end of the day one is for the betterment of the student and society while the other one is for the government and police force to boost up their finance..........i won't be surprise if another case involve government and money.........for instance did not donate to government they also haul u to court for that........hihihi :D .............just another tactic to suck us out completely..........!!!!

My old man, who never went to school, told me this once:

"The wickeds will borrow and not repay!

The rightious shall be blessed and inherit the earth."

So, the advice I got is never resort to unnecessary borrowing. And if you have to borrow, borrow for making more money.

U Chang.......ehem.......sounds like fried onion......hihihi :D ..........i do agree with ur point of view but again doesn't education the biggest investment for a person...........u get back ROI of maybe 10 times or more and especially not many can afford private education..............if u call them to consider public Uni.........then just forget it................if onie education is affordable to all Malaysians then we can call this justice........else look like have to depend on loan lor...........and to say that we borrow from the gormen.........is this what i hear..........i say the gormen borrow from us and charge us back with a % of interest..........thus more appropriately should be known as Ah Long..................

who pay tax and who in the end have to settle the loan.........the graduate lar.........so isn't this seems so ironic.................u pay for ur tax........u get a loan from gormen which by right is ur own money.............then u have to pay them back with exorbitant interest rates and lauya service..........they r even worst than bank.........!!!
