Over 330,000 applied to join civil service

New Straits Times
Dec 16, 2004 :
MORE than 330,000 applications to enter the civil service were received by the Public Service Commission last year. Of the 333,279 applications, 13.78 per cent or 59,537 were from non-Bumiputeras, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"Chinese applicants numbered 6,284 (1.89 per cent), Indians (7,323 or 2.2 per cent) and other non-Bumiputera communities (45,930 or 13.78 per cent)." In a written reply to Senator P. Wilson Sagamani, Abdullah said 2,770 non-Bumiputeras were successful in their applications.

Appointments for positions, especially those with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), were made by ministry secretaries-general or department heads who have been reminded to accept suitable non-Bumiputera applicants.

"A Bahasa Melayu credit in SPM will continue to be a condition for those wishing to enter the civil service. This requirement will be relaxed for important positions with few suitable candidates, such as medical officers," he said.

The best policy will be to select the best person for the job regardless of race or gender..that will make any company successful..and if that means all malays so be it(although I can say that is very unlikely no matter what race you belong to....chinese,american etc as there is always good and bad in each race)..and give ppl who are handicapped etc a fair chance for a job and get them involved in our workforce and building the nation.
