Man who insulted Islam over website identified

KUALA LUMPUR: The man who had allegedly written insulting remarks about Islam on a website has been identified.

Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik, who disclosed this, said police has identified him as a laboratory technician in his 30s from Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

He told a press conference here that police has taken a statement from the man, who is a Muslim.

"I am very surprised that a Muslim can do this to a fellow Muslim," he said after chairing the Gerakan central committee meeting today.

Probe Papers On Blog Statement For A-G Soon

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The Energy, Water and Communications Ministry will submit to the Attorney-General's Chambers by the end of this month the investigation papers on the case of a laboratory assistant who posted a religious incitement statement on a website last month, Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said Saturday.

He said the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lab assistant, who is in his 30s, was interviewed by ministry officials last week and had admitted to posting the statement on a blog. A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web.

"He, however, regretted his action but we will have to act. He will most likely be charged under the Criminal Procedure Code or the Communications and Multimedia Act," Dr Lim told a press conference after the Gerakan Central Committee Meeting at Wisma PGRM, here.

The statement on the blog had challenged and misconstrued the Islam Hadhari (Civilisational Islam) concept propounded by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, causing an uproar among Malaysian Muslims, and there were demands for action against the writer.

Dr Lim said the ministry's legal department was in the midst of preparing the case to be submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers and would leave it to the Attorney General to pursue the matter. He also said that he had briefed the Cabinet on the matter, and that the police were investigating the case.

Meanwhile, Dr Lim, who is the Gerakan president, said the party was worried that while the comfort zone among the various races in the country had risen, "some characters in and outside the party (Gerakan) are continuing their attack using extreme racial and religious issues".

"We are worried. We ask all political parties to play down the voices that raise extreme racial and religious issues. To allow these people to climb up the political ladder would be like playing with fire," he said.

If these leaders were allowed to issue inflammatory race and religious statements it could destroy the fabric of national unity, he said, adding that Gerakan was monitoring this trend very closely and would not tolerate such people in the party.

Dr Lim also announced that in an effort to promote national unity, Gerakan would organise a "DeepaRaya" event at its headquarters on Nov 17 in conjunction with the Deepavali and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivals. Deepavali falls on Nov 11 while Hari Raya Aidilfitri is expected to be celebrated on Nov 15.

I thank God for HIS most merciful blessing and love. With HIS compassionate guidance I am saved from my own momentary indiscretion and thoughtlessness, and with HIS blessing I will be completely forgiven for the hurt I have unwittingly caused some parties. I am but a family man beholden to HIS mercy and judgement, and I pray for HIS continuing compassion that the unfortunate incident be closed peacefully in HIS holy month of tolerance, love and forgiveness.

I also wish to express my sincere thanks to:

§ the authorities for their consideration in not pressing any charges against me in the spirit of Ramadan

§ Mr X and company for making the brotherly effort and sacrifice to appeal on my behalf during my plight. I thank them most of all for their understanding that I had meant no malice or any evil intent to any party, and that my unthoughtful act had been on the spur of the moment and during a heated ‘debate’. I thank them for the diplomatic words which eeabled me to express my feelings and thoughts effectively

§ Malaysia-today.net for publishing my apology note, and understanding that there was real repentance on my part.

§ Malaysiakini for publishing an appeal letter on my behalf, sent by Mr X

§ Malaysian Lampoon for temporarily suspending his blog in sympathy for my plight

§ Sinner's Ark for his effort to assist me

§ readers yang memberi sokongan dan bersimpati terhadap saya. Ribuan terima kasih, saudara-saudari.

§ last but not least to all Malaysians who in their forgiving spirit had understood that my thoughtless act has been nothing more than a regretful action in the heat of a blog debate that I have expressed contrition over. I am after all an unsophisticated working man lacking the power of words except those that I use on a humble daily basis in my life.

In the spirit of Ramadan, as a humble act of repentance, I have donated to Persatuan Kebajikan Anak Pesakit HIV/AIDS,Malaysia a humble amount to alleviate the sufferings of others. Through HIS merciful blessings and HIS will I have undergone and now understand what suffering can be.

I am now at rest with myself inner self, feeling HIS bountiful blessing and mercy, now more humbled to respect the feelings of others.

Once again, my heartfelt thanks to you all.

how? "safe" to comment here or not?

I hope it's real. Whether it was a case of "Thoughtless act" or "lack of power of words", only the man himself and THE MAN HIMSELF have the answer. I hope it is real for I feel the huhhah is unjustified and disproportioned.

I was told statements have been taken by the authorities from a total of 8
people, including those who made demands in the newspapers.

I am, however, not privy to the decision taken by the authorities in pursuing
or not pursuing the case. That's the jurisdiction of the authorities and I am in
no position to question or comment.

My advice is to let the authorities do their work and pass down its verdict
through the proper channel.
