Km302 Of North-South Highway Closed After Landslide
IPOH, Oct 11 (Bernama) -- The North-South Highway at Km302 near Gua Tempurung had to be closed following a landslide on the highway at 7.35pm Monday night.
Kampar OCPD Supt Mohd Fauzi Arshad said that following the landslide, motorists on both lanes of the highway heading north and south had been diverted to the federal road at Tapah for those going north and Gopeng for those heading south.
......
He said there was a possibility that there were vehicles trapped in the landslide and police personnel were carrying out a search and rescue operations for possible victims.
Meanwhile Works Minister Datuk Seri Samy Vellu said Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS) personnel were making preparations to clear the debris.
He said clearing works could not be carried out immediately due to heavy rain.
However, he said, there had not been any report of vehicles being trapped under the debris so far.
......
This is the second time that a landslide had occurred on Km 302 of the North-South Highway with the first incident in January 1996 about 10 kilometres away from the present site.
=====================
Another case of "Divine Intervention"?
or a case of the slopes not being inspected regularly?
Now human lives are involved. Hope all can be rescued in time.

He said all police personnel, firemen and Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS) staff in Kampar and the surrounding districts had been deployed to the site to carry out clearing and repair works.
"Works to clear obstacles on the road were ongoing to assist motorists who were being blocked by the landslide," he said when contacted Monday.
He also called on road users to adhere to instructions issued by PLUS and to be wary throughout the highway.
He also urged them to use the federal road between Tapah and Gopeng while waiting for the highway to be reopened for traffic.
Later, Supt Mohd Fauzi said that a motorcyclist was trapped under the debris and suffered leg injury.
The victim was rushed to Hospital Kampar for medical treatment, he said.
Fauzi said the 18-year-old victim was found under the debris at about 8.30pm by a search and rescue team comprising personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, PLUS, police and RELA.
He said: "There's a possibility that two other vehicles are trapped under the debris and we are endeavouring to rescue them".
The two vehicles believed to have been trapped under the debris while travelling from north to south, he said.
Meanwhile, a witness, K. Mohan, 27, a workshop employee, said he saw a tree fall while travelling southward on the highway.
The falling tree hit a car, which was travelling, on the highway and he helped to push the car to the roadside before hearing a loud sound and when he turned around, he saw that the hill slope beside the highway had suddenly collapsed.
This is the second time that a landslide had occurred on Km 302 of the North-South Highway with the first incident in January 1996 about 10 kilometres away from the present site.
In that incident, a lorry attendant was killed while the driver suffered injuries after being hit by the landslide.

The Star:
Tuesday October 12, 2004
Motorcyclist pulled out of rubble, Gua Tempurung stretch closed
IPOH: A major landslide has closed the North-South Expressway at 302km near Gua Tempurung during heavy rains yesterday.
Tonnes of earth, boulders and trees came crashing down the hill slope burying at least six vehicles in metre-high rubble at a spot some 500m from where a landslide occurred on Jan 6, 1996.
A motorcyclist, who suffered a broken leg, was the only casualty in the 7.30pm incident as all the drivers and passengers managed to get out of their vehicles in the nick of time.
SURVIVOR: Mohd Nasri, from Teriang, Pahang, at Ipoh Hospital. He was rescued from the landslide.
Mohd Nasri Mohd Mazlan, 18, was found buried up to his waist by firemen who responded to the emergency call.
He told police that he saw the earth, boulders and trees falling from the slope and jumped off his machine in a bid to get away.
Mohd Nasri, who was travelling south, even managed to get to the other side of the highway but was overtaken and buried by the rubble.
Other motorists, who escaped uninjured, tried but failed to extricate Mohd Nasri.
Mohd Nasri, from Triang Pahang, was sent to the Ipoh Hospital. Rescue and clearing works were called off at 11.30pm for fear of more landslides, as the rain had not abated.
The vehicles recovered from the debris were Nasri's motorcycle, a lorry, two multi-purpose vehicles and two four-wheel-drives.
About 100 rescue workers from the fire department, police, Rela, PLUS and a team from the Ipoh Hospital’s emergency unit were at hand to help out in the rescue work.
The landslide that covered both lanes of the expressway caused the stretch from Tapah to Gopeng to be closed to traffic for at least a week. The incident caused a massive traffic snarl. Some motorists said they were caught in the traffic jam for over two hours.
Motorists heading north and south were diverted to the federal road at Tapah for those going north and Gopeng for those heading south.
PLUS in a statement described the incident as a mudslide and that it left a trail of debris of 75m in length and about 1m in depth on the southbound lanes of the highway.
“Further monitoring is being carried out to ascertain that no more soil movement in the surrounding areas,” the highway company said.
S. Ramesh, 34, who was heading for Kuala Lumpur with two friends after giving a lecture in Penang, was among those in a convoy of cars.
One of his friends, known only as Prof Menno, was a lecturer from Liden University in Holland while the other was 39-year-old T. Kumar.
They were scheduled to give another lecture in Kuala Lumpur today.
Ramesh said he first saw an uprooted tree crashing down on to the road.
“When I was trying to avoid the tree, mud, boulders and other debris came rushing down and pushed our car towards the divider.
“We panicked. Luckily the doors on the right side were not jammed. We opened the doors, jumped over the railings and ran,” he said, adding that all their belongings in the car were damaged.
Businessman Chan Choong Park, 65, who was driving a lorry to Tanjung Malim, said he saw three cars in front of him slowing down.
“I then stopped my lorry. That’s when I saw trees crashing down the slope. I tried to open the door but it got stuck, so I escaped through the window.
“There was a loud noise and just as I got out, boulders and mud came crashing onto my lorry. I was lucky to escape,” he said.
Chan said he could see that the landslide affected a stretch up to 100m long and covered both lanes of the southbound highway and one lane on the northbound side.
Motorist M. Mohan, 27, said he and other motorists abandoned their vehicles and ran for their lives.
“I saw a motorcyclist trapped in the rubble and was shouting for help but I it was not possible for me to pull him out,” he said, adding that the motorcyclist was later rescued by firemen.
“There was a small lorry, two multi-purpose vehicles and two four-wheel drives in front of me when the earth from the hill came crashing down,” he said.

The Lord ( The Genuine Article i.e.the Real McKoy ) is trying to convey something to Semi Valu. Landslides, cracks in flyovers, sloppy roadworks, ........take the hint, Semi(nal) Valu .....
Reason for landslide >>>>> again "soft spongy ground below ".
His Valus ( in Tamil means "Tails" or "kunjuus" ) will now promise us that they will " Stabilise the slopes ", readjust the gradients, realign the earth's plates (whatever that means), re-plant the hair on his head, polish the slopes of his forehead, ........ all to ( yes you guessed it ) no avail.
In 1996, Semi's "valus" did not study the entire PLUS highway for potential
landslip points ............ They did not look just 10 kilometers away. Double amazing !!!!
Dear Pak Lah, Semi Valu is an insult to your intelligence ..... pls do the needful. Pld sack the sucker. Give me a reason to continue to vote Barisan.

To side track a little bit, I hear that this stretch of the highway is 'puaka'. Anyone with some interesting story to share?
All,
Drove back from Penang yesterday afternoon. Noticed the traffic from South exiting Tapah is terrible. The jam started a few hunderd metres on the h/way all the way to the traffic lights junction at Tapah (a few kms long). So my advise is to exit at the Bidor intersection instead of Tapah to avoid the long queue.
Cheers.

QUOTE FROM NST DATED 13th Oct 2004
Letters to Ed column.
PWD PROJECTS: Minister wasn’t speaking off cuff
E. SIVABALAN
Press Secretary to the Works Minister
Oct 13:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I REFER to the letter "Minister should stop these remarks" (NST, Oct 11).
All statements by the Minister of Works, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu pertaining to the Middle Ring Road 2 flyover in Kepong was based on the findings of the Public Works Department, and this included the cost of the repair at RM20 million.
The same was the case with the East Coast Expressway and the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Baru.
In fact, the minister visited the expressway and the hospital to see for himself and be briefed on the findings by the independent consultants.
Even before the so-called killer stretch was highlighted, the minister was travelling regularly on the expressway.
As such, it is incorrect to say that the minister was making "off-the- cuff" statements as claimed by the writer.
The Public Works Department is entrusted with the mandate to advise the minister accordingly on all projects under its purview.
The minister has, time and again, stated that his conclusions were drawn from the reports submitted by the experts and in this case, the Public Works Department and the Malaysian Highway Authority, not to mention the independent consultants.
One should not just draw a conclusion by merely reading what is reported in the media.
There have been times when statements by the minister have been taken out of context.
I wish to state here that he has always emphasised in his statements to the media that his priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of the people.
UNQUOTE
Now let me see how I can keep my comments within "non-derogatory" limits ....... hhhmmmmmmmmmmmm
And Sivabalan .... his comment about the MRR2 cracks i.e. not caused by design failure was off the cuff, off the top of his head, off the wrong end ..... keluar dari mana ?
Not bad.
I did it.
I stayed decent.

You know, euro_usj, kwchang had directed that comment at my posting and I agree with u ............ at least upto to the point where u say " worried about being watched or being shut down ".
This "worry" is symptomatic of a deeper / wider malady with Malaysians and is totally discordant with these non-Mediaeval times.
Even tho there is life out there i.e outside this forum, THE FORUM SHD SURVIVE at all costs, right ? Even if it stops serving the original Thinking Allowed, Thinking Aloud tag line. Even if this forum has seen real and much worse threats ( AND SURVIVED ) to its existence ( the S*** & Ur*** episode is case in point ) than angry comments leveled at Semi Valu .......
I do understand the effort that would have been invested in getting a forum such as this one from infancy to maturity. But what if all this came to nought because some sanctimonious pr*** in the government took offense to a comment in this forum ..............and God forbid THIS FORUM IS SHUT DOWN. (For the moment ignore the derogatory label " old man " used by kwcang).
I do also empathise with kwchang and all the other mods in the context of the onerous task these guys have on their shoulders.
Some forumers can be difficult ( like yours truly ) some cld be plants from the opposing camp ( dead bent on shutting this forum down ), some cld be friends of that one Kuey Teow seller about whose unsavoury ( unhygenic ) dishes a comment was posted, some cld be friends of gov-vermin's ( refers to govt servants of the lazy irresponsible variety only - not the good ones ) who have had their depts taken to task in this forum ........... long story short .... there are all kinds of characters who hop on to a forum of this nature.
So how shd the mod handle ? ......... Capitulation ( on principles ) is not one of the things I wld prescribe.
Anasthetised thinking is no thinking at all.
But sanitised ( i.e disinfected ) verbalization is highly recommended, as in, forumers shd avoid cursing people's mother and father-lah.
Some more .... say what u have to say but keep people's hairline, hair transplant, hip replacement, etc out, maaaah ?? ... here I agree with kwchang entirely.

I think what Jaygee has to say is fair comment and non-derogatory. I won't say it is even a criticism. Even if it is, didn't we read today news that leaders must accept criticism. If they cannot, might as well join the other ministry of the holy kind as we tend to be very careful to criticise them knowing well who is behind them. One wrong comment, it is worst than a red card - caripochi lah. Jaygee is not the first to ask Pak Lah to sack him. Even PAS and DAP are crying out for that. We just have to give him enough ropes to hang himself. One of these days when he runs out of reasons for something he is responsible for, that will be the day. Roads like those in Cameron Highlands and Fraser Hill have stood for decades. Those that were built under our Semi Value are falling apart even before they are opened to public like the recent one leading to Cameron Highland where the slope is dangerously at 70%. If God is not happy one rainy day, caripochi again. Even a child using a protractor can tell it is 70% The recent highway leading to Kuantan is the cause of hundreds of accidents just because it is bumpy and the cornering is too "chiap." So I am also joining the queue calling Pak Lah to sack him or alternatively place the Works Ministry to the other old Chinaman who can count and that is Datuk Seri Lim Keng Yaik. He is on our side rather than Samy Vellu who is usually on the other side.

pcyeoh ..... I was just pulling your leg. I know u mean Semi Valu.
But how sure are you that another Minister ( who just happens to know how to count ) will save us Malaysians from similar national ( and International ) embarassment in future. We shd avoid the "we need a hero to save us" mentality.
It is not the personality-lah it is the system.
It is the mind set that says that " I am in the govt so can I can do no wrong ".
Trust me ............ if the jokers from PAS or DAP were to occupy the places occupied by Barisan the same malady will continue.
WHY ? Cos we the Malaysians deserve to b sc***ed.
WHY ? Cos we got sc***ed several times b4 and took it galantly and welcomed more by remaining silent.
WHY do we remain silent ? Cos we are told that " We cld get shut down".
Pak Lah has set his lieutenants a huge goal.
But hell !!! .... he has at least started saying the right things. He is very particular about what he says and he very well means it.
However, some of his lieutenants have let him down in the past ( and will continue to in future ) but at least we know Pak Lah is a right thinking individual.
However, why he is unable to shrug off 30-year old baggage like Valu .... time will tell.

You beat it to me by self answering your question. We don't hang our fellow forumers and we don't provide them the ropes. We just kick the chair underneath he is standing!!
Everytime I talk about our Works Minister, I end up doing no work. In fact I get very worked up that it affect my present work so I shall leave him alone. I am sure he is going to shoot from the hips again. I don't expect any other minister to be a saviour as the saying goes "Semua satu macam." But not our Datuk Seri Lim Keng Yaik. So far he is OK. While he was the Ministry of Primary Industry, he was very protective about our oil palm and timber INDUSTRY and not the contractors and vendors who profitted from it. He dared to shoot reporters with his saliva and asked for proof for any allegation and committed to take action if given. When he took over the new ministry, he put a stop at the water privatisation project and said "Unfortunately for these people, they don't know that this Chinaman knows how to count." He even warned TNB before they even think of increasing the electricity tariff to show prove that they are productive first and then justify the increase. Yeah they are productive at teh tarik shops and under flyovers doing their afternoon siesta. To PUAS, he said "You must not charge based on the volume produced lah. 40% are non revenued water that went wasteful into the longkang and therefore cannot charge. You can only charge for revenued water." And in the most recent case happening in our own backyard where ministers were all ready with the ropes to hang our Jeff Ooi over a degarotory remarks on Islam which was posted by a perpetrator in JO weblog, it was again Datuk Seri Lim who is more rational dared to say otherwise. The same principle should apply to highway contractors and concessionnaires. You must make good for the damage and inconvenience caused. Cannot say 18 years and what do you expect. Eternity? Cannot say if we blacklist the contractors, there won't be any good contractor left. He is indirectly saying there is no honest or good contractor left in Malaysia. All are lousy. And cannot always blame God. One day he has to face his Maker. Just like one Minister who is always wrongly misquoted was asked "Which is the leading newspaper in our country?" he replied "None as ALL are misleading.

As for topic ........... it is not LKY's credentials that are being scrutinised. I have a load of respect for that man's ( saliva spray notwithstanding ) crude, down-to-earth way of speaking his mind.
But my point was ........... why choose Rajnikanth when you feel disappointed with Kamalhasan ?
Both will not deliver if the Director ( in this case he public ) justs sits on his hands i.e. is worried that his film sets "will be shut down" if he exercises his reponsibility i.e. DIRECTS these Super stars ?
I know that both Rajni and Kamal will forgive me for equating them with Semi Valu.

Reason given " The cause of all these problems we face is the Minister ".
Dear kwchang you can now breath easy my friend.
We will get shut down ONLY if the Dewan is shut down by the mysterious forces that work in the background and haunt your dreams.
At least our MP has the guts.
I know ............... I know ........... the wise old saying ............. HERO DIE FIRST maaaah ??
Yeah .....classic reasons for sittin on our hands.
Dear Datuk Loh Seng Kok your voters salute you.
You have taken a brave step forward. You have read the pulse of the public.
But cos you have revealed your cards, you and your parliamentary colleagues will face a barrage of squeals from MICe in MIC saying "Dont meddle".
FOR GOD SAKE ......... GO AHEAD AND MEDDLE IF THATS WHAT IT TAKES !!!
Your respective parties ( UMNO, MCA Gerakan ) will probably face a barrage of counter accusations to cloud the issue at hand. I am not in any way implying that your repective parties do not have their of problems. But we recognise that taking this step took a lot of political will and sheer guts.
SYABAS GUYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Datuk LSK, you are a refreshing change from Mahalingam ( the bawling x-MP ) & Nijhar (One whose bark is worse than his bite ).
BOTH WERE MICe ..... if I might add.

Err...to those heading back to the Northern regions...during the coming festive DeepaRaya holidays....Orchi suggests to take the Bidor exit on PLUS Expressway...head to Teluk Intan...to get to Manjung/Sitiawan....passing Pantai Remis....to get to Changkat Jering/before Taiping....to rejoin n continue the journey on PLUS Expressway....northbound. :)
OR....you might wanna head straight by the coastal route.... from Kelang/Kapar/Kuala Selangor/
Sg. Besar/Sabak Bernam ... .n just before Teluk Intan.... you could then use the same route via Manjung/Sitiawan also..... :)
Safe motoring.... :)

Hey Jaygee, not so fast ........ I mean bestowing the datukship title on Loh Seng Kok just because he has the guts to ask Samy Vellu to quit over mudslide issue. While those who can bestow the datukship title have no handbrake, I am afraid I have to pull yours before you get carried away. And the second thing is Subang Jaya is a state constituency. LSK is a MP and he represents Kelana Jaya, which has a much larger coverage. And for him to say " The cause of all these problems we face is the Minister " makes me mighty proud to have him as my MP. I nearly threw a brick on Samy when I heard him over TV3 to say that anybody who takes over as the Works Minister will still be unable to stop God from sending those torrential rain which is the cause of all those problems when I realised that if I did it, I would only smash up my 29in TV. And yesterday he boasted that even on an off day, he was so busy working. Can someone tell him that the post of a Works Minister is not to be seen working all the time but to do a proper job with full responsibility, accountability and in his case with humility. We don't expect him to be greater than God to stop God from sending those rain. But one thing he said that from now on, he would stop any project what is not compliance. Well said, Datuk Seri Samy Vellu. This is the first time I ever heard something sensible from your mouth. Now let us see it is being done.

Err...PCYeoh :) ...not quite yet..you should hold on to YOUR horses...aaahhhh....so now the minister is saying or suggesting that he is well aware of projects under him which are not in compliance...n yet he went about to approve them anyway?....
So how?....meaning wat?....at the back of his mind...since bloody 20+ odd years ago....he could abuse The Divine one or use rain for one of his arsenal of excuses.....should the projects fail sooner or later?

saw samy vellu defending himself on tv the whole of the weekend...
passing the ringgit, here & there...
saying that any person who's a works minister will face the same problems...
it's out of his hands...
short of saying it's the work of god...
which brings me to this question:-
if it's not the work of man, then it must be the work of god. what then is god trying to tell samy? no prize for the correct answer...
a divine intervention?

Can anyone advice me of this issue?
I will be travel via from Singapore using the North South Highway to Taiping Exiting CKT Jering.
Please advise if the Highway is still closed due to landslide.
If it is still closed, how do drivers get to Taiping due to road closure?
Thanks
Nic

Firstly, are you a Georgie boy or an Edwardian cos if you're a Georgian, forget it, I'm not helping?!!! Hey Nicky, just joking, man ;)
You exit at Tapah, after hours of jam :( , take the trunk road all the way to Simpang Pulai, get into the highway again and travel as how you usually do to Taiping.
Nicky, there's your solution. And by the way where do you live in Taiping?
