However, jokes aside, he does come back to Malaysia once in awhile.

Would anyone want to pay my airfare?
I heard from a few photo shops that people dont buy that much film camera anymore. Mostly digital cameras. So there are sure many digital cameras (some have more than one) owners in USJ and Subang.
It will also be a good idea if we can keep a museum of USJ and Subang photos and events for our future generations... perhaps 100 years anniversary..... of USJ

Any idea where we can find the cheapest photo lab in USJ/Subang Jaya to process photos taken with digital camera? This would be a good recommendation for us to share!

Being a regular customer at Bintang Maju at Summit (next to the stage) they offer me 40cents for 4R prints for the next 1 year. If there are many interested parties, I can try to talk to them for usj.com.my regulars. I also got a camera at a good price from them recently.

The answer is obvious. DIGITAL :p
Based on the purchasing trend among my friends and myself it is DIGITAL camera. Especially, when the prices had dropped.
The camera shops also told me that they are lucky if they can sell one Analogue SLR every 3 months.
You can go shop around and ask around. I know there is a Photo Fair at MidValley now.
There are also 2 photography magazine in the market - Click! and Advance Image - available at MPH or Photo Shop

Sukhipana, if we can get around 4/5ppl, then can organize a photo outing. Nearest is Subang Lake or Shah Alam Lake.
As for the photo lab, try this shop(forgot the name) in taipan along the Standard Chatered Bank. Got some Fuji Colorlab signboard.

I used to frequent there when it first open, the boss, a chinese in his 40s was very polite and nice and he talks photography lingo. He charged me 45-50cents. Now he is back to his shop in PJ. The young guy charged me 60 cents. My prints usually around 150 to 300 one time. Usually family photos kept for a few months or more on one single CD.
Thinking of opening a photo lab shop for my retirement, but the machine, I heard is about RM100,000.

The plastic straps sucks. Have to buy a more comfortable cloth one.
With the additional battery holder and a flash, it is quite heavy.
Managed to take over 190 photos with a 512mb card last weekend. ;)
Looking for a cheap bag to put the fully assembled camera in! :(
So far the camera is great. Got the remote RC1, trying to take some self portrait :D
Thinking taking a day off to visit my friend in Menara Telekom, hope to take some views of KL from there. :D

Online Photo Album? No lar. Not up to your standard yet. I am just like a Kancil driver who just got a Beemer :D , All excited. I read alot and mix with some photographers when I started work years ago. I mostly take family photos, wedding, party, School, etc nowadays. As long as got a good camera and lots of film, can compose, sure come out ok. one
As for my new found interest that I do not have time for, I am just printing some of my works. Have to wait for a few days, my volume for this printing is about 250 photos accumulated over 4 months. Personal and friends. I have not even read my 300D manual!
My flash is the 400 series and there is a 500 series, the better one I think.
The lenses have to wait. Still paying off my 300D :D

Hi Sukhipanna,
Glad you like the pics. :D. I don't developed my pics that often, only burn 'em onto CDs. The last time I developed was at Taipan, some Fuji shop, along the Stardard Chartered bank.
Actually I just started this hobby not too long ago, so still in the learning process. I'm actually planning to go shooting this Sunday at Shah Alam lake. Been there a couple of times, nice place for photography. If anyone is interested, pls. reply to this thread or pm me.
My suggestion is we meet/start around 4pm and ends at 8/9pm. This is because the Shah Alam lake has got 3 interconnecting lakes and this will take some time if you really want to explore all the 3 lakes. Night shots would be around the majestic mosque of Shah Alam. Any takers?

I do not have a really canggih digicam like you guys but i was wanting to know the functions better for my digital ixus III. I can't seem to focus on one object and make the rest of the background blur. I always get a whole sharp picture after taking it. How do I actually do that spot focussing where the target is clear but the background is off focus?? Please help. Thanks
kwchang
20-11-2004, 11:54 PM
That is only possible if you have manual control of the aperture. By setting the aperture wide open, it decreases the depth of focus down to a narrow range and thus blurs out the background. With a fully auto pocket-sized camera, that cannot be controlled.
However it may be fudged if you try to take the picture in low light where the camera may be tricked to set a wide aperture. I am sure you can see the f-stop settings on the LCD monitor - try to get an f-value like f2.

My digicam has manual control but it does not contain any control for the aperture. Most of the things i can change are the white balance and the type of shot i want to take like vivid or soft but it does not do the trick. Are there any more "affordable" cameras which are digital I can buy within say RM 1800 range??

I'm not too sure about the Ixus series. If like what you said about the manual control, then you should be able to control the aperture. Other than that, you can try macro or portrait mode as this will also helps to make the focused object to stand out of the rest.
For RM1800, you can try the Fuji S7000, 6mp prosumer model(last time I asked was about RM2000, might drop to 1.8k by now). This is my previous camera, very satisfied with it. Other than S7000, you can also try the Panasonic FZ-3, Canon S1, Canon A95, Konica Minolta Z3, Nikon 5200(no manual control but offers lots of scene assist) etc. With a budget of RM1800, you should be getting a decent camera with all those manual control + hot shoe. Also try to look for a local camera magazine called "CLICK". Lots of camera information + most importantly the price. At least you know which camera is within your budget. Hope this helps. :)

CY Leow lives in New Zealand. He is a master, and we can only wait for an
opportune time to bring him here, perhaps sometime next year.
But if I get another master to conduct a 2-day Workshop + Practical + Post-

would you be interested?
We need about 25 people for the workshop to defray some costs.
Please have a look at his gallery:

I hope you dont rush into buying one. Shop around. Ask around. Test it. Make sure the camera fits what you want to do and your budget. Bear in mind that the "smaller" camera cannot or have limitation in what they can do and what you can do. Perhaps you might need a Digital SLR with accessories like filters, lenses, flash lights, etc to fit your interest. Your creativity is limited to the accesories the camera support.

Agree with fRaNkY. Make sure your hard earned $$$ is well spent! The Canon A series(A75, A85 and A95) is quite small(though not as small/slim as the e.g Casio Exilim or Canon Ixus) but can do a lot of things. It has got full manual mode, add on tcon or wcon, filters which is considered good for its size. End of the day, it's up to you. We can just give our advice/suggestion.. :D . I managed to get a blur background when I select PROGRAM (instead of Auto) and select MACRO (picture of a flower) on my Sony P092. The focus should be on the subject.
The camera selection in this case should not be the megapixel but the programe mode.

One of my friend have an Ixus Vsomething. Perhaps, I will borrow her camera to test and tell you how later.
My advise is go back to the manual and read through again.
One of the frustration of having or using a compact/small digital camera is that it takes good pictures, yes, I meant all digital cameras (auto focus ones) do. It is suppose to. As for creativity, they are limited. Even my dSLR do not have aperture control!

fRaNky,
I'm not sifu la. Learning also. Ok, you need to set the mode dial on the 300D to AV(aperture value) and then rotate the other dial(right before the shutter). You will see the aperture value change, say from 2.8 right up to 28 or 32. Try it. :)

Most compact digital cameras do not have aperture control, so don't worry about it. However, if you are willing to spend more and buy a camera with more manual controls, here is my limited contribution with regards the aperture control -
The aperture controls the amount of light getting into the camera once the shutter button is clicked. However, please undertand that only an optimum amount of light is required to make a reasonable exposure. Hence the apperture size is usually automatically compensated by the shutter speed (ie the time taken to open the shutter to allow light to hit the light sensitive element for picture capture). If there is no shutter speed compensation, the picture will be over or under exposed, depending on the aperture size selected.
The more light means the camera will need less time to capture the image. Hence if you were to open up the aperture, your camera will compensate by opening the shutter for a very short duration. This is good for capturing fast-moving objects. If the aperture is wide open, a fast moving object like a car or a cheetah can be frozen in action.
Conversely, you may be caught in a situation with insufficient lighting such as within a ballroom during a dinner function. In this case, a wide aperture setting will allow you to have more light and an added advantage is that the faster shutter speed compensation may allow you to avoid handshake-blurring of the image when the shot is taken.
Aperture size will also affect the depth of focus, which is the range of distances where all objects will be in focus. If the aperture is small, the depth of focus will be very long. A small aperture setting like f16 for example may allow you to maintain a sharp focus for everything between 2 meters to infinity. Hence this is very good if you are photographing a mingling crowd and you also want to ensure that the people and the background are all in focus.
Conversely, a large aperture reduces the depth of focus. For example a setting of f2 may allow you to maintain a sharp focus within a range of half a meter. This is useful if you want to have a sharp focus on a near object while the backgound is blurred.
Knowing how manual controls affect the outcome of the picture will help with a lot of special effects.
fRaNkY
13-12-2004, 03:05 PM
U sure your dSLR does not hv aperture control?
Yeah you are right, just read the manual, it got the aperture and shutter speed control.
Unlike the manual camera where you can control the aperture at the lenses and the s/s at the knob on top of the camera. Its been a while, cameras had advanced so much :D Next time, you think what you want and the camera will set it for you.
fRaNkY
13-12-2004, 03:24 PM
franky, Dreamer and other sifu's out there, what does changing the aperture value do for the quality of the photo. I'm just learning how to use my point and shoot more effectively.
No offense, but if you are really serious about photography, you should get some magazines or books and read up. I know it is expensive but you will get your camera's worth. Also, you can deduct income tax mah! :D Reading the manual that comes with the camera also helps to know what your camera can do or cannot.
Seeing pictures publish and try to figure out how they are taken can be a challenge.
Layman's term:
Aperture - Is that "lubang" in the camera where lights are allowed to pass through. At night, buka lubang besar (use 5.6 and with flash) and at day time where light is bright, use 16 or lubang kecil. For taking pictures on fast things like Superman (and racing cars) use 16 or more or you will get a blur.
Shutter Speed - Is the speed of the open/close of the lubang (exposure). Usually 1/90 second is use with a flash light. If you take superman, use 1/250 or more. If you want to take the picture of a long stream of the car light, use lower S/S and experiment. Many2 years ago, I tekan, buka, count 10 then tutup, probably 1/30 to get that effect.
ISO - Is the speed of the film. Normally you can buy ISO100, ISO200, ISO400 films. But digital camera do not have film, so you have to read the manual and set the ISO. Again if you want to shoot superman, use ISO400 or more. but the "grain" is a bit kasar on the film. To take gambar bunga use ISO100, to take people make love at subang lake at night use ISO1000 without flash :D

I believe Photoshop is only legal if you paid for it.
There is a very good graphic/photo editor software available FREE for downloads. Get it from http://www.irfanview.com/

This outlet has a special offer for the USJ.COMmunity. Check out the article and then the outlet. So far, the hard copies have been very commendable.
A word of caution to newbies. Dont always just go for price when getting your digital prints made. Check out their machines or the quality of their prints. The old generation machine dont do a very good job and hence you are likely to get your prints done cheaper. But if that is your priority, then no problem. Also, check the paper they use and the number of prints they use from their chemical. Sometimes you dont get vibrant colours from your prints due to these factors. So, if quality is your priority, they dont necessary come cheaply.

Aiyah, Frank...it's not just the scenery nice lah. Also the skill to turn out such production! Ha ha...
They are really magnificent views and we were very lucky because the weather in these places are highly unpredictable. Rain, snow, sleet, snow storm, extreme cold...anything to thwart your holiday plan! Tourists have been stranded by the thousands up on these mountains. Jokes aside, many have even died before the Huanglong airport was opened in 1992 and the only way up was along the winding mountain roads.
We were very lucky because the day we left, it started to snow again.
Rgds.
I shall post more for your viewing pleasure!

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your advice. No worry, I am also particular about quality of my photo prints. Used to work in the photography industry. I usually insist on the type of paper I want and also the colour. For instance, I prefer Kodak or Fuji paper. Colour - more Yellow to Blue hue.
Once, an unethical photo lab tried to make me accept the poor quality prints that they developed, with the excuse that my negative is the reason for the poor colour result. I managed to talk them out of it based on my experience. See , it's not always the case with our film being expired. Sometimes, like you said, their chemical may be expired or the paper quality used is poor.

I prefer to use Adobe Photoshop to edit my photos.
Use them a lot to incorporate into my presentation or website!
Very useful tool to create creative photos.

Sukhipanna, after you have tried out Fotolife, please keep all of us posted on the quality of their prints. That way we keep merchants on their toes and ensure we get good service, if not the best.
So far, their productions have been very good.
Rgds.

Hi bettawalk,
The S7000 is good camera, used to own one. I think you can still get it at some of the camera shops. You can check out Key Color(Megamall) and also Leos Com(Ampang Park). As this model is a prosumer, you can interchange lens. For macro, you hv to get the close-up/macro filter. They comes in +2, +4 etc. I got mine at Leos Com. Hope this helps. :)

I am interested in DSLR, few questions that need answers from you all.
What does "body only" means. Can the camera be used without lens? Why then they sell a camera without lens?
Just saw the price display at one of the shops at midvalley.
Canon EOS 20D RM6299
Canan EOS 350D RM4299
Nikon D70 RM4088
Can these camera be found cheaper elsewhere, says Low Yat? How much can we haggle?
I supposed Canon EOS 350D replaced 300D. So, how much cheaper is a Canon EOS 300D?
Is Canon EOS Digital Rebel and Digital Rebel XT available here? How much? I supposed the Digital Rebel is under RM3000 (listed in US as US$700 so times 4 to convert to RM)? So are the rebel cheapest Canon DSLR? How much does it cost here? Any good testimonial for the Rebel?

Hi stone,
Welcome to usj.com.my photography forum. Now to ur questions. The term "body only" means the shop will sell you the camera body minus the lens. This is to give you the choice of getting the lens that you like. And also the price will be cheaper than the package(camera and kit lens).
Those price that you mention is the SRP(suggested retail price). You can definately get them cheaper. Maybe about 10% cheaper. Try Key Color at Midvalley or Photo Selangor at Pertama Complex.
You can get the 300D for about than RM3k or less. Not too sure about that.
Fyi, the Digital Rebel is called 300D here and the Rebel XT is 350D. Check out www.dpreview.com. Hope this helps.. :)

Thanks Dreamer, now it make sense why I never see a Rebel so far in Malaysia. So, most likely at RM3000, I will pick up the 300D. :)

Dslr are mostly use by the higher end photographers, people who find P&S, point and shoot, cameras do not have the features they wanted, like zoom lenses and accessories. So these people upgrades themselves to Dslr and they can use, .i.e. 500mm lense to take wild animals or birds. You just cant stick a zoom lense to the tiny P&S camera like the canon A400 :)
Normally, photoshop will sell you a camera body only, like when u buy a Slr.
But my Canon 300D comes with a kit lense, 28-55mm (correct dreamer?) and therefore slightly higher the price, about RM100++. Since I like taking pictures of bugs and flower, I need a macro lense. If you want your sky shots bluer, add a blue filter :)
However, I feel I should have bought a canon 20D as there are features 300D do not have.
As for Nikon D70, I think it is one of the best selling camera for Nikon. There are many of my photo friends owned the D70 and have no complaints.
I got my Canon 300D from Fotodata midvalley and 420EX from Bintang Maju Summit USJ. I suggest you go shopping around first. Compare price..

Thanks for the tips, Samurai. I nearly buy a Nikon 5700 but decided not to at the very last minutes. Now it will be a DSLR or no photography. :)

Stone, pls. be informed that the Nikon and Canon lens mounting is NOT the same. The lens made for Canon dSLR will not be able to mount on a Nikon dSLR. Eg, if you get a Nikon D70 + few lenses and later on decided to switch over to Canon(no offence to Nikon users.. :D ), you will hv to sell off your entire Nikon lens and start over again with Canon lens. Think carefully on which brand u want to start with. Actually, you won't go wrong with either brand. Btw, you hv pm.
