View Full Version : Low-flying planes, are you concerned?

Do any of you who resides in SJ/USJ/surrounding areas hear of the deafening sound of low-flying planes especially in the middle of the night. It is quite frequent almost every night nowadays.
A few months ago, my 2yr-old toddler woke up crying because a plane was flying so low and the noise was extremely loud, in fact, i thought it was going to crash in our area, at that moment i was only thinking about not having written a will yet, .....
I thought Subang airport is no longer in use.
A staff at Subang airport mentioned that Subang airport is
still in use, but for aircrafts (a certain commercial airliner)
that are in need of maintenance, major repair, and the like. No wonder those low-flying planes are making strange noises, sometimes they sounded like they were having difficulties climbing, making a turn, etc
Questions (fellow forumer, pls provide your input)
- How safe is this practice, i.e., low-flying aircrafts (worsen by the fact that these aircrafts are in need of maintenance or repair) in high density/populated residential areas. Has there been a law enacted in relations to this?
- Can residents file noise complaints, to whom and how
(Which body regulates airspace, etc).
Or perhaps this issue has been highlighted before, kindly provide a link if there is any (current only please, i.e, after KLIA replaced Subang airport)
I live in SS14, i have not heard of anything maybe my bedroom is soundproof:)

Strange, I live very near your area but no such incident at the current time.
Are you new in USJ?
Before KLIA, we lived through all takeoffs from Subang and no we were not concerned although we were in the flight path most times. A lot of intercontinental flights take off near midnight to optimise customer time (sleep on flight and arrive in the morning) so imagine the thunderous take offs after 11pm ! Did anyone complain then? In fact the USJ population boomed - people were also queueing up for new houses especially in USJ11.
Although KLIA is operational, I did remember hearing that Subang may cater for cheap flights in future. Something like a city airport?

Aircraft requiring maintenance are those coming for regular checks and preventive maintenance. These aircraft are just like our cars being sent for regular servicing. They are not falling apart. The only concern perhaps are those low flying airforce jets as a few incidents have happened in Kuantan side, but I do not think they carry out difficult maneouvers over populated areas. Remember Kai Tak Airport of Hong Kong. The aircarft coming to land are "scrapping" the tops of the buildings over Kawloon, yet none had hit the roof top.

I do not hear anything during the night recently , other than my neighbour's cats meowing in their cage!
Well, I use to open the curtains to watch the planes passing my window before they move to KLIA, nice to watch especially around midnight.
Perhaps you can note the time, date and any info and complain to DCA - Dept of Civil Aviation. They should have an office at Subang or KLIA.

I think the MAS maintenance facilities are still at Subang so they need to fly the planes from KLIA to there for servicing. They are not exactly falling apart. When Subang was KUL the traffic volume must be at least 100X more. Anyway one of my pilot friends commented that it is probably safer under the flight path as any crash is more likely to be away from that. BTW he lives in SS 19.

I have lived here in Subang Jaya for the last 30 odd years. The airplane noise that we get these days...I'd like to treat them more like music! ;-) Boy, if only you folks get to live here around that time, then you will know what a plane noise is really all about!
Rgds.

I've taken that approach as well...I had too, since I lived very close to Heathrow for several years...oh whenever the Concorde came by, blizz, and you could set your watch to it.
It never ceases to amaze me how the Brits always integrate old and new, on the slope up to the actual runway, they keep sheep (!), though I wonder what they use the wool for, it must have been soaked with jet fuel.
Boy, if only you folks get to live here around that time, then you will know what a plane noise is really all about!

Why the windows panes and the house would vibrate and my little kids would run for shelter....................the noise was frightening, thundering.....the huge planes use to fly so low.

The national airline's planes do not fly at low altitude.
It cud be the Airforce doing some low flying training.
Noise did not bother me..must be immune by now.

3 am ! Wow, I'm like gone to another world by then. Either that or I'm getting old or just accustomed to the planes from the years of conditioning before KLIA.

During a regular morning traffic rush, some weeks ago, I saw a Military Charlie C130 flying exremely low above SS19 /USJ2 area. I thought that was against standing instructions, but I don't know.
I was ready to swerve my car, looking at the way the bird was being handled at such a low altitude. Crazy.

C130 flying exremely low
But a C130 is music! At least compared to those lousy jets. Just enjoy... Evenmoreso the old DC3, Shorts and DeHavillands.

Older people's hearing is a bit less sensitive than younger people.
People living in Subang Jaya for a long time are immune to plane's sound.
When you are tired..... everything is quiet.
I surely missed those planes flying pass my windows every night..... and all those flight stewardess staying round my area :p

Chan: Hub plan for no-frills airlines still on
"The Government’s plans to set up a hub for no-frills airlines will be completed by this year, either at the KL International Airport (KLIA) or at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang Jaya, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said.
“The fact that we have not made any announcement yet does not mean that we are not moving. We are moving very aggressively. We will announce it when the time is right,” he told reporters when asked the status of the Government’s decision to turn Malaysia into a hub for low-fare carriers after opening the World Maritime Forum here yesterday.

Thats politico's talk for we still do not know what to do. The fate of Subang airport has been a political football since KLIA opened. Everybody has an idea but no agreement and changes with the political situation. I remember just after KLIA opened LLS said that all MAS flights will shift to KLIA. The next day MAS said no, some flights will remain at Subang.

You guys are lucky. Not like those residents staying at Wangsa Baiduri - not only have to 'tahan' the noise from the air, but also has to suffer the noise from those cargo train (sometimes with overloaded cargo) at night. At times, you can also experience the tremor as the train approaching and leaving the area.
LoL .... a free massage with each train . I'll like that...... 30yrs ago right beside the railway track ...

Reopening Subang Airport will destroy quality of life in surrounding areas
The government is going to decide once n for all whether to allow Air Asia (n low budget airlines) to operate from Subang Airport, and the decision will be known before Chinese New Year.
I among many residents here do not agree and would like to protest against it.
Anybody know of any mean such as public opinion poll (thru usj.com or any other website) where one can submit and make a difference in persuading the goverment in the decision making process?
The government thru the media has made it clear that it takes all opinion into consideration before making the decision.
Please provide link(s) / advise.

Isn't it too late at this point? I understand all paper work has been done and various groups for and against have made their representations. Tony Fenandez is so cocksure that Subang will be a LCC (Low Cost Carrier) regional hub. MAS has submitted their strongest objection for obvious reason. The residents of Ara Damansara housing estate 2 km from Terminal 1 also joined in the fun and is sending a petition against it again for obvious reason. I forsee the LCC hub will still be set up but not at Subang but at KLIA to please MAS. I don't think they will care about the Ara Damansara petitioners but if the LCC is at KLIA, the residents would be the next happy lot.

Err...this here is Orchi's 2 kupang...Subang airport gave life n vibrance to SubangJaya...n in its heydays...SubangJaya n the nearby residence n business community mushroomed for great number of years...until much was changed...when KLIA was declared open to the public n travellers in the middle of a swamps somewhere...to much dismay n inconvenience
Ahem...since then the skeletal remains of the old Subang terminals n facilities were left either abandoned or neglected...while there are a bunch of vultures fiercely contesting with one another...to have a bite of its potentials...
Therefore...should it turn out to be well planned n utilized eventually...Orchi would NOT mind the trade offs... :o

Most probably the increase in flights from Subang is for the relief effort to Acheh. It was informed in the news that Subang is one of the 3 M'sian airports to be used as forwarding base, or something like that.
Personally, I have no problem with planes flying over Subang Jaya. Been staying in SS19 with my parents when I was a kid. And now, bought a house and staying in Putra Heights, so sometimes the flights to and fro KLIA and Subang pass overhead.
I feel there's more danger while a plane is on the runway and taxiway than when it's attempting to land or take off. And yet, some people felt that it's ok to take off their lap belts while the plane is taxiing.

The noise didn't bother me one bit when i was a kid, we all slept like a baby, the noise was like lullaby. When the airport transfered to KLIA, we took a long time to adjust to the new surrounding. The nites were just too quite, we found it to be a bit eerie. Sometimes when i couldn't sleep, i could count planes instead of sheeps.
Visiting cousins will get very excited each time a plane pass by, pointing and gaping in awe. We just smirk with pride, the airport was a part of our neighbourhood identity. I wouldn't worry so much about planes crashing in Subang, the odds are very very low. We used to joke that if Subang Jaya was ever flooded, the whole of Malaysia will disappear, so the same can be said about crashing planes in Subang.
